Concealed Air Curtains at Cannon Street

Concealed Air Curtains at Cannon Street

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has supplied four custom air curtains for a concealed installation at 110 Cannon Street, where they have been discreetly embedded into the walls. The air curtains are hidden from view on both sides of the imposing main entrance and quietly ensure a comfortable temperature within the elegant reception lobby. When the architects conceived the design of the exciting and stylish refurbishment at 110 Cannon Street, an 11 storey, 70,000 sq ft building in the heart of the City of London, they specified air curtains would be required but demanded no appliances be located above the revolving entrance door or visible through the glass façade. Building engineering consultant AECOM called in air curtain specialist, JS Air Curtains, with whom they had previously worked, to tender. JS’s innovative, ‘concealed’ design proved the ideal solution.Steve Lockwood from AECOM commented: “This is an unusual application for air curtains that would traditionally be sited above the revolving doors. However, JS was able to adapt the air curtains to overcome any difficulties that concealing them in walls might cause. The air curtains have been installed for several months now and appear to be working very well.”JS custom designed each of the four 1.5m air curtains with air inlets and outlets at 180° to each other to enable the air to enter at the back and be emitted from the front. Two sets of two 1.5m air curtains were then connected vertically to form 3m towers, which were concealed within the walls on either side of the building’s main doorway exiting onto Cannon Street. The air curtains prevent the glass revolving door from acting like a slow moving fan, bringing in cold air with every turn.As well as producing custom concealed units, JS Air Curtains can also supply bespoke models that incorporate other services such as CCTV cameras, smoke detectors, motion sensing alarms, signage and branding, and fascia panels made from a variety of materials or that contain elements such as clocks.
JS Air Curtains at Esprit

JS Air Curtains at Esprit

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has recently supplied and installed a Windbox 18kW air curtain at the Esprit store in Covent Garden, London. The air curtain was specified for the installation by consulting engineers E&M Tecnica of Surrey. The two metre air curtain allows Esprit to leave their front doors invitingly open to passing trade whilst also maintaining a pleasant internal environment. The stylish unit creates a wall of heated air in the winter to keep the cold air out, and a wall of ambient air in the summer to keep the air conditioned air in.The Windbox air curtain range is available in any RAL colour or stainless steel. It has double low noise centrifugal inlet fans driven by an external rotor motor, which provides up to five speed selection. A micro-perforated air inlet grille acts as a particle filter and reduces servicing to just a periodic wipe or vacuum. The air curtain can be mounted horizontally above a door up to 3.5m in height or vertically at the sides of doors up to 7m wide, with one at each side. The control panel has plug and play RJ45 leads and comes with 20m of telephonic cable so it can be mounted out of sight, in a different room or behind a desk.Heating can be supplied by either low pressure hot water, with outputs up to 29kW, or electric heating, with outputs up to 32kW. The Windbox air curtain is available in 1m, 1.5m, 2m and 2.5m models. The air curtain project at Esprit was managed by JS Air Curtains’ in-house installation department. A complete service is provided to ensure the customer is guided through the installation of their air curtain from system design to product training. This includes agreeing exact specifications prior to installation, a step-by-step method statement for the project, detailed scheduling, risk assessment, and a post installation trouble-shooting and handover meeting.
Bespoke Air Curtains at Park Plaza

Bespoke Air Curtains at Park Plaza

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has designed and supplied three bespoke air curtains to the Park Plaza County Hall Hotel in London. The air curtains were round polished stainless steel units and were designed in conjunction with engineering consultancy, Hilson Moran, and architects, BUJ Architects. Two air curtains were mounted above doors on either side of the main revolving door at the Addington Street entrance. Each was just under 1m long and incorporated electric heaters capable of providing up to 12kW of heat. Another 1.8m air curtain was designed for the side door entrance with an electric heater providing up to 22.5kW.The air curtains were designed to tie-in with the stainless steel and glass fascia of the 398 bedroom hotel located on the south side of the River Thames. As the front of the reception area is glass fronted the air curtain had to look attractive from all sides. A totally smooth, round, polished stainless steel design was decided upon. The air curtains were mounted directly on to the glass walls by installers, Essex Electrical Group, using specially produced stainless steel brackets. The air curtains had to be manufactured to exact dimensional specifications to fit into the available space and work in conjunction with the bespoke brackets. Exit signs were then mounted on to the front of the air curtains. As well as supplying a large range of standard air curtains, JS offers a bespoke service so that designers can use the air curtain to complement the overall design of an entrance. As well as signage, other services such as PIR sensors, CCTV cameras, emergency lighting and smoke detectors can also be incorporated into the air curtains.
Welcome Break for JS Air Curtains

Welcome Break for JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has supplied eight air curtains to the Welcome Break motorway services at Membury on the M4. The air curtains are helping to maintain internal temperatures even with the external doors in constant use.The air curtains were installed by Russell Air Conditioning. Five 2m Windbox air curtains and three HeatScreen air curtains are positioned at the front entrance, rear entrance and on some internal doorways.Ray Drinkwater, Facilities Manager at Membury Services, commented, “Without the air curtains the doors acted like a wind tunnel with the cold air blowing right through. The air curtains from JS were recommended by Russell Air Conditioning and have done a great job in stopping the cold air entering.”In total the air curtains are capable of providing over 21,000m3/h of airflow to seal the doorways. As well as keeping the heat in during the winter, they can also be used with the heaters off in the summer to prevent air conditioned air from escaping. The Windbox air curtain has a powerful output and can be used on doorways up to 3.5m high. It can be horizontally mounted above a doorway or vertically to the side. The units supplied to Welcome Break were white but the Windbox is available in any RAL colour to suit interior architecture. The air curtain can incorporate electric or low pressure hot water heating and is controlled from either a five-speed wall mounted controller, supplied with 20m of plug and play RJ45 cable, or via a BMS system. The other model used at Welcome Break was the HeatScreen air curtain. This is an economical air curtain with a maximum output of 1,670m3/h. It can be controlled either with the panel on the front of the unit or via a handheld remote control. Air Curtains for Cadbury

Air Curtains for Cadbury

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has supplied a bespoke Rund air curtain for the entrance to the offices of Cadbury in Birmingham. The 2m slate grey air curtain has a round design and is held horizontally above the reception door by matching slate grey supporting posts. The newly refurbished reception area was becoming cold from air ingress through its main doors. The air curtain was designed to tie-in with the architecture of the entrance and provides a barrier of warm air to create a pleasant and welcoming environment for staff and visitors to the office.Paul Dennick, Implementation Project Manager at Cadbury, comments, “After a major refurbishment of this part of the building, the reception area was suffering from cold air being sucked in through the main doors. We needed an air curtain that was independently mounted, as it could not be fixed to the fascia or ceiling of the reception. Since the air curtain from JS has been installed the cold air problem has been solved.”The Rund air curtain has many different mounting options. It can be suspended from a ceiling with cables or attached using arms to either the ceiling or wall. Alternatively it can be stood vertically at the side of a door or mounted horizontally on goal-post type legs, as it was at Cadbury. The air curtain will protect a doorway up to 3.5m high from air ingress when mounted horizontally or 7m wide when two units are stood vertically aside an entrance. The electrically heated unit installed at Cadbury can provide up to 5,550m³/h airflow and up to 30kW of heating. The Rund is available in electric or water heated versions, and as a non-heated, air only model. Five lengths are available from 1m to 3m and they can be mounted end-to-end as one continuous unit, with up to ten air curtains being operated from a single controller. It comes with 20m plug and play RJ45 connection cable and can also be operated from a BMS system. The centrifugal double-inlet fans provide high levels of airflow whilst being remarkably quiet in operation. The Rund air curtains can also accommodate other services such as motion detectors, CCTV, signage or emergency lighting enabling these features to be hidden or more inline with the architecture of an entrance.

JS Air Curtains Olympic Heat

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has supplied eight Rund air curtains for the new concourse entrances at the Olympic rail links at Stratford and Ebbsfleet International stations. Two entrances at both stations had identical air curtain systems installed, each consisting of two 1.5m Rund air curtains joined by a 2.7m non-functioning dummy section. The air curtain systems were installed by M&E contractors, Eurolec Services Ltd, and specified by Morgan Sindall Professional Services.Peter Capron, Architect at Morgan Sindall, commented, “This high profile project in the shadows of the Olympic Village demanded air curtains that would complement our entrance façade design. The Rund model from JS Air Curtains fulfilled these requirements not only with the form, but also with the functionality.”The air curtain installations are part of the construction projects taking place at Stratford and Ebbsfleet stations in preparation for the 2012 Olympics. Up to 25,000 spectators every hour will be shuttled on the new high speed “Olympic Javelin” trains between central London and Stratford. The pairs of air curtains at each doorway were fitted with a central dummy section, joining them in the middle and giving the impression of a single 5.7m long unit, complementing the overall ascetics of the entrance. White RAL9016 was chosen for the project to match the colour of the doorway but the Rund is available in any RAL colour. The Rund air curtains at Stratford and Ebbsfleet stations will help prevent cold air from entering with the doors in constant use. They incorporate 22.5kW electric heaters but hot water heating and air only models are also available. The Rund air curtain is offered in any single length from 1 to 3m with multiple units accommodating wider doorways. Fan powers vary from 1,875 to 6,475m³, making the air curtain ideal for sealing doorways up to 3.5m high. The Rund has many mounting options. It can be held horizontally on brackets, as it was on this project, suspended on rods, mounted on post-type arms either from the floor, ceiling or wall, or stood vertically on the floor.Signage can also be accommodated on the air curtain, such as the Exit signs used at Stratford and Ebbsfleet.
Air Curtains at Exchequer Court

Air Curtains at Exchequer Court

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has installed two vertically mounted stainless steel Rund air curtains at Exchequer Court, a multi-story office block in St Mary Axe, London. The air curtains are keeping the draughts out and providing the main heating source within the large, open atrium of the reception area. The high ceiling of the atrium and the large revolving entrance door prohibited the use of air curtains suspended from the ceiling and demanded a high heating output to counteract the cold airflow. The heating capacity of the Rund air curtain, coupled with its capability to be mounted vertically, made it an ideal choice for Exchequer Court.Building manager, John Evans, commented: “The massive cubic space of our entrance atrium was proving a challenge to heat because the revolving doors were acting as a huge fan, bringing in cold air with every turn. The Rund air curtains, positioned vertically either side of the doorway, are able to cope with this, keeping out the draught and providing sufficient heating for our reception staff. We have had no complaints of cold over the winter season and have been able to maintain a low heat output setting.”The Rund air curtain has an attractive cylindrical design and is available in five lengths from 1m to 3m with a variety of control options including thermostats, door open sensors, outside temperature sensors and timers. It can be electrically heated or water heated, with outputs ranging from 3-36kW, or supplied as an air only model.Powerful double-inlet centrifugal fans provide up to 7,400m³/h of airflow, whilst being remarkably quiet in operation. This output makes the air curtain suitable for use on doorways up to 3.5m high or 7m wide when used vertically at either side. The Rund air curtain can be fitted with many different mounting or suspension options to tie-in with an entrance’s architecture. The units can be mounted on round goal post-like supports that can stand across an entrance or shorter arms that attach it to a wall or ceiling. It can be hung with chains or poles or stood vertically at the side of the doorway, as it was at Exchequer Court.

JS Air Curtains Beautiful at Beaufort House

JS Air Curtains Beautiful at Beaufort House

JS Air Curtains

The aesthetic design and high quality performance of the Rund air curtain from JS Air Curtains made it the ideal choice to complement the imposing blend of traditional and contemporary architecture at Beaufort House, a prominent building in the City of London. The large commercial property has around 4,000 occupants passing through the entrance atrium each day. The constant use of the double door elliptical air pod made the drafty reception area cold and uncomfortable. Four, two metre high, Rund air curtains were installed vertically at either side of the doors, to heat the air in the pod and create a barrier against cold air entering the building.Graham Powell, electrical director at building services engineering consultancy Thornley & Lumb, specified the air curtain requirements: “We have enjoyed a long history of working with JS Air Curtains. We were confident that four Runds, each with a heating output of up to 30kW and air flow up to 5,550 m3/hr, would comfortably meet the needs of Beaufort House’s large reception area. A key consideration in the specification was the aesthetics of the air curtains as they needed to merge seamlessly with the minimalist and modern interior design. The stainless steel Runds blend in beautifully.”Contractors Sykes & Son fitted the air curtains. Director Mark Baston said: “We found the Rund air curtains were as easy to install as the JS sales team was to work with. The Rund’s have been operating for over a year now with no problems reported.”The air curtains at Beaufort House are economically heated with low temperature hot water but electrically heated and air only models are also available. The Rund air curtain has an extremely attractive, cylindrical design and can be fitted with many different mounting or suspension options to tie-in with an entrance’s architecture. Beaufort House selected the stainless steel option although the Rund is offered in any RAL colour. Among the different mounting options available are round goal post-like supports that can stand across an entrance or suspend the unit from a ceiling or wall. It can be positioned horizontally above the door with chains or poles, or stood vertically at the side of the doorway as at Beaufort House.

JS Air Curtains at University College Hospital

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has supplied and installed six air curtains above the doors of the University College Hospital in London. Sets of two 1.5m stainless steel air curtains and a 2.5m curved air curtain were installed above identical doorways at both the Euston Road and Beaumont Place entrances to the hospital.A curved RotoWind air curtain was used to protect against draughts coming through the hospital’s double curved sliding doors. Both doorways automatically open in turn as someone walks through the entrance, providing a double seal to the doorway. However, at busy times both doors can be open at once so the air curtain creates a barrier of air across the internal doorway, preventing cold air from entering the hospital. The RotoWind air curtain is bespoke for the curved angle of the doorway and incorporates an electric heater with an output of up to 32kW and low noise centrifugal double inlet fans providing up to 6,475m3/h airflow. The RotoWind air curtain can also be used with revolving doors and is available in any RAL colour with electric or low pressure hot water heating and air only models. Three formats are offered with different mounting options. The motor housing can be mounted above the doorway with the semi-circular outlets blowing inside the door’s aperture. Another model is mounted above the door blowing on the room-side of the inner door opening and a third has its entire motor housing mounted room-side and blows around the room-side of the doorway. The two air curtains mounted above the swing doors to the sides of the hospital’s large circular entrance have an attractive round design and stainless steel construction. Both are 1.5m in length and incorporate electric heaters capable of delivering up to 22.5kW of heat and low noise fans providing up to 3,700m3/h of airflow. This type of designer stainless steel air curtain can suspended horizontally above a door or stood on its end and positioned to the side. It can be fitted with many different mounting or suspension options including round goal post-like supports that can attach to a wall, ceiling or stand on the floor. It can also be suspended with chains or poles to tie-in with the architecture of an entrance.

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has designed, supplied and installed four brushed stainless steel air curtains at the offices of Associated Newspapers in Kensington. The 2.5m air curtains were joined to create a pair of 5m wide air curtain systems that keep cold air out during the winter and air conditioned air in during the summer. The air curtain systems were mounted above the doorways at the front and rear of the building. They both have the same attractive cylindrical design and are suspended from the ceiling with matching arm supports. The units stop air from entering through the revolving doors of the building, which can act as slow moving fans, bringing in cold air with every rotation. Each pair of stainless steel air curtains provides an airflow of up to 13,000m³/h and are electrically heated with a total heat output of 64kW/h, maintaining a pleasant internal atmosphere.JS also supplied and installed a more standard 1.5m Windbox air curtain above a single external doorway at the Derry Street entrance. It has an output of 3,700m³/h with up to 22.5kW of heating.Associated Newspapers Limited is the management company for five major newspapers - Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, Evening Standard, London Metro, Irish Mail on Sunday and the advertising publication Loot. The type of bespoke cylindrical air curtain installed at Associated Newspapers has many different mounting options to tie-in with an entrance’s architecture. It can be stood vertically at either side of a door, hung with cables above the door or suspended with supporting arms attached to a ceiling, wall or floor. When mounting horizontally it will provide an effective seal for doorways up to 3.5m high and when positioned vertically at either side of a door, it will protect entrances up to 7m wide from air ingress. These cylindrical units are available in lengths of 1m, 1.5m, 2m and 2,5m, and can be joined end-to-end to accommodate very wide entrances to buildings, such as the entrances to Associated Newspapers. Up to 10 units can be operated from the same controller, connected to the air curtain with 20m of plug and play RJ45 lead for easy installation. It can also be controlled via a BMS system.

JS Air Curtains Top the Bill at BFI IMAX

JS Air Curtains Top the Bill at BFI IMAX

JS Air Curtains

The aesthetic design and controllability of the Rund air curtain from JS Air Curtains makes it top of the bill at the BFI IMAX cinema, London, whose reception and café were suffering from cold draughts at peak visitor times.Because of the location of the BFI IMAX in Waterloo, its main entrance is directly opposite a subway tunnel that funnels the wind straight off The Thames corridor into its reception area and café. At show times, up to 500 visitors are arriving and leaving during a short time period and the doors are constantly open with the consequence of cold air pouring into the building.BFI IMAX facilities manager, Duncan McKeich, believed air curtains would solve the problem but he had three key criteria to meet. The air curtains had to be vertically mounted and aesthetically pleasing, as there was little roof space for concealed horizontal units. They also had to have flexibility of control so they could be quickly turned up to combat the cold at busy visitor times. The JS Rund air curtains met these criteria and two 2.5m electrically heated units have been installed vertically, one at either side of the entrance doors, forming a barrier against the cold outside air.“The design of the JS Rund was a major factor in its specification,” explained Duncan McKeich. “The air curtains look in keeping with the contemporary building design, especially as they are circular and in stainless steel. The fact they are so easy to control is also important. Our ticket desk team has access to the controls and can alter the fan speed and heating output of the air curtains as needed.“The curtains have proved very effective, even during the recent spell of freezing weather when our staff were delighted they did not have to put on hats and scarves this year! The curtains’ draught proofing also meant that we could turn down the central heating, so offsetting the additional electrical load on the building.”The Rund air curtain has an extremely attractive, cylindrical design and can be fitted with many different mounting or suspension options to tie-in with an entrance’s architecture.Among the different mounting options available are round goal post-like supports that can stand across an entrance or suspend the unit from a ceiling or wall. It can be positioned horizontally above the door with chains or poles, or stood vertically at the side of the doorway.

The Art of Air Curtains at Roca Gallery

The Art of Air Curtains at Roca Gallery

JS Air Curtains

The Roca London Gallery has been designed by Zaha Hadid Architects to complement the hallmarks of global bathroom brand Roca’s identity - design, innovation, sustainability and wellbeing. M&E engineer Max Fordham was tasked with specifying the air curtains to fit seamlessly into the reception space and chose three 1.5m electric Windbox air curtains from JS Air Curtains. The design of the Roca London Gallery is highly stylized and the reception area is no exception. Air curtains were required to prevent cold air entering the building through the main entrance doors but it was essential that they did not detract from the aesthetics of the interior. Contractors Scomac Services took JS’ Windbox air curtains and designed and fabricated steel moulded covers, following the template of the German manufactured ceiling screens.“We also had to make an extended telescopic bezel, following JS’ standard design, to enable us to connect to the air outlet,” explained Doug Kenneth, contracts manager for Scomac Services. “The Windboxes’ plug and play technology made them very straightforward to install within their unusual steel housing, which has not compromised their high efficiency performance in any way.”The Windbox air curtain has a powerful air and heating output making it suitable for use on doorways up to 3.5m high. Available in five widths, the units can provide up to 7,400m3/h airflow and 32kW heating output. Adjustable airfoil shaped outlet vanes can be positioned at 0-15° to provide optimum seal across an entrance. The Windbox incorporates low noise centrifugal double inlet fans driven by an external rotor motor with built-in thermal protection. A wall-mounted controller provides five speed selection and comes with 7m of plug and play RJ45 telephonic cable and a hand held infra red remote. Alternatively it can be operated via BMS.A micro-perforated inlet grille acts as an air filter to prevent airborne debris entering the air curtain prolonging its operational life. This removes the need for internal filter servicing and can be easily cleaned with a wipe or vacuum by regular maintenance staff. The Windbox is available in electric, low-pressure hot water and air only models. The unit has a self-supporting casing construction made of zinc plated steel, finished in structural epoxy-polyester RAL 9016 as standard. Other colours or stainless steel construction are available on request.

The company’s quick response and cost effective products made JS Air Curtains the ideal retrofit choice to protect the customers from chilly drafts at Cannon Hall Garden Centre, located in the picturesque village of Cawthorne in South Yorkshire. As they opened, the automatic sliding doors at the main entrance into Cannon Hall wafted in bitterly cold winds, bringing down the ambient temperature throughout the garden centre to an uncomfortable level for both customers and employees.Seeking a retrofit solution, Cannon Hall Garden Centre’s owner, Deborah Robinson, approached a number of companies and was impressed by the speedy response of JS Air Curtains, who suggested a cost effective and attractive Mini Optima.“The entrance vestibule always felt so cold; not very welcoming for our customers. We needed a warming solution that could be easily retrofitted, complemented our existing décor and provided adequate heating to increase the comfort level within the garden centre,” explained Deborah. “JS Air Curtains was the first manufacturer to respond to my enquiry. Its Mini Optima met our budget and proved ideal. The air curtain from JS was a perfect and easy fit while looking stylish and unobtrusive.”Offered in several lengths, the Mini Optima air curtain is available as a single or three-phase unit, making installation simple. Heating can be via LPHW or an electric heater, as in the case of Cannon Hall, and it is also available as an air only model. Adjustable outlets enable the airflow to be directed at an angle to give a tight seal across the doorway. The casing is constructed of zinc plated steel and comes in white RA9016 as standard with other colours available on request. A micro-perforated inlet grille will filter the air entering the unit, avoiding the need to routinely replace or clean internal air filters. All the inlet grille requires for maintenance is a wipe or vaccuum occasionally. The air curtain is supplied with a wall mounted control panel, hand held remote and 7m of plug and play RJ45 lead to connect it to the air curtain. The unit can also be connected to BMS.It has low noise twisted cross-flow fans driven with a two speed external rotor motor. The Mini Optima's power connections are made on the top of the unit, avoiding the need to open the casing to wire it in.

A chill store air curtain installed outside a cold store at Zwetloots Ltd, “The Flower People” in Bedfordshire, has proved virtually 100% effective at sealing the chilled air inside, with the door left open. Zwetsloots needed to keep its blooms at a temperature of 4-5°C to maintain freshness and provide easy access in and out of the cold store, whilst not chilling the adjoining area.Tests showed that with the air curtain turned on above the open door, the floor temperature directly outside the cold store remained above 12°C – exactly the same as the ambient temperature outside the store! The 2,200m² cold store is linked to a staff-occupied packing area by a fast-acting shutter door. The problem had been the movement of warm air, at a high level, into the chill store when the shutter door was open, which effectively pushed the heavy cold air out into the staff area. For the staff, this provided an uncomfortable and draughty working environment and Zwetsloots was faced with increasing costs in order to maintain the chill store’s cool temperature.David Zwetsloot, Technical Director at Zwetsloots, commented, “We trialed the air curtain for two weeks as we were concerned that the down-draught would damage the flowers and that it wouldn't create a seal across the door. However, the down-draught had no effect on the flowers and it sealed up the fridge and ambient working area very well – a lot better than I expected it to.“Tests showed that there weren’t any cold spots near the entrance when compared to the ambient temperature for the rest of the building. Staff that work near to the chill store used to complain that it was cold. However, since the air curtain was installed we’ve not received a single complaint.”Mr Zwetsloot continued, “It’s difficult to quantify a financial benefit from any energy savings at this time. However, based on maintenance for the existing fast acting roller door alone, the payback period will be between 8 and 17 months.”The air curtain is specially designed to create a continual wall of ambient air over the doorway. It is installed outside the room, directly above the door, and switches on when the roller door opens. For flexibility, it can be fitted to variable heights up to 5m. Since it is so efficient at controlling the flow of air through a cold store entrance, it quickly pays for itself when installed on any cold store that is open for an hour or more per day.Zwetsloots is the UK’s leading supplier of cut flowers to the multiples, wholesalers and retail florists. In peak times, the company produces up to 1.6 million bouquets a week and obtains flowers from countries around the world, including Holland, Spain, Morocco, Zimbabwe, Ecuador, USA and, of course, the UK.

Eliminating Draughts at London Fire Brigade

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has supplied an electrically heated air curtain for the London Fire Brigade Head Quarters in Union Street, to eliminate cold draughts from its reception area. As well as keeping the cold out in the winter, it also keeps the heat out during the summer, improving the air conditioning quality and energy efficiency of the building.JS supplied the attractive round 2m Rund air curtain in brushed stainless steel to contractor Arkas who installed it horizontally above the double entry sliding doors leading into the London Fire Brigade’s HQ reception area. A time switch and digital thermostat were also provided.John Bridger, property services manager for the London Fire Brigade explained: “We recognised the need to install an air curtain following complaints of the reception being draughty due to cold air entering the building through the external doors. The aesthetic design of the air curtain was important as it would be highly visible above our busy main entrance. As the building is electrically heated, we also needed to ensure that the installed product would not compromise its energy efficiency performance.”Each 2m air curtain is capable of delivering an airflow of up to 5,550m³/hr and up to 30kW of electric heating output, although this is limited to 18kW at Union Street. Other models are available with hot water heating or fan-only operation. The Rund air curtain offers the ability to house other services such as smoke or motion detectors, emergency lighting, CCTV or signage. The air curtain also has many mounting options. It can be held horizontally on brackets, suspended on rods, mounted on post-type arms either from the floor, ceiling or walls, or stood vertically on the floor. The air curtains can seal doorways up to 3.5m high when mounted horizontally or up to 7m wide when mounted vertically at both sides of an entrance. Five lengths are available from 1m to 3m with a variety of control options including thermostats, door open sensors, outside temperature sensors and timers.

JS Air Curtains

JS Air Curtains has supplied two Zen air curtains and a Rotowind revolving door air curtain for use at BT’s global headquarters at Newgate Street, London. The air curtain system was design by entrance specialists, Blue Chyp, who developed a custom solution to meet BT’s aesthetic and functional objectives.Adam Pressland, Director at Blue Chyp, commented, “The reception area at BT’s offices in Newgate Street had been suffering from draughts, creating an uncomfortably cold internal temperature. However, BT needed an air curtain solution that provided protection across both the pass doors and the main revolving door but didn’t detract from the original architecture.“We achieved this by creating a counterbalanced mounting solution for the two pass door air curtains that removed the need for any suspension system attached to the ceiling or fascia. The units were supported by a central frame across the top of the door. Matching colours to the existing interior and custom-made covers for the revolving door air curtain produced a seamless design.”JS Air Curtains supplied two 1m electrically heated Zen air curtains for use above the pass doors at BT, Newgate Street. The Zen is part of JS Air Curtains’ Designer Range and has a contemporary architectural style. It can be fitted with bespoke fascia panels of different materials and any RAL colour, and also carry signage, branding or even elements such as clocks. It is available in 0.5m lengths from 1 to 2.5m and with electric or water heaters and as a non-heated, air only model. The air curtain protecting the revolving door is a Rotowind. This air curtain was designed to meet the specific conditions of a revolving door, which can act as a low-speed fan, forcing a mass of cold air into a room with each rotation. The main body of the air curtain is mounted above the door with curved air outlets creating a barrier around the inner opening of the doorway. Each unit is created to exactly match the curvature of the specific model of revolving door.JS Air Curtains supplies an extensive range of air curtains, as well as bespoke solutions, for all commercial and industrial applications.

AluK (GB) Ltd

A faceted on plan curtain wall completed in AluK’s SL52 system is the centrepiece of the two storey community hub known as The Curve in the Bryn Gaer Place housing development. AluK’s technical team worked closely with their commercial fabrication partners Vellacine to design the curtain walling for the project in Newport, which also required an external canopy to be attached to the system. The challenge was to deliver the faceted on plan design in a practical and cost effective way. This was achieved utilising AluK’s SL52 curtain walling system with a variable gasket solution and a single mullion to ensure that the glazing complemented the external façade design. AluK’s SL52 flexible, capped curtain walling system met the aesthetic, thermal, wind and water performance requirements set down by the north Wales based architects Ainsley Gommon.

Air Curtains Collaboration at Drapers Hall

JS Air Curtains

Air curtain specialist, JS Air Curtains, and entrance specialist, Blue Chyp, have recently supplied and installed four revolving door air curtains at Drapers Garden office complex in the City of London.Blue Chyp was called in by its partners, Boon Edam, who had installed four revolving doors at the impressive 16 floor office complex to provide front and rear access to the reception hall. Constant use of the doors was creating severe draughts through the foyer and causing discomfort to the reception staff, resident employees and the building’s many visitors. Believing air curtains could be the solution, Blue Chyp turned to JS Air Curtains.Adam Pressland commented for Blue Chyp: “We thought air curtains would solve the draught problem at Drapers Gardens but needed an expert to help us specify appropriate eco-friendly units to meet the heating requirement while keeping electricity consumption low.“JS Air Curtains has provided the ideal air curtain in the Rotowind G1500E, which was designed specifically for use with revolving doors. Working closely with the JS project management department, our design team subsequently fabricated bespoke plenum covers, matching the structure of the four entrance doors, to camouflage the Rotowind units.”Black Rock, the asset managers for Drapers Gardens, has been delighted with the improved comfort and reduced energy costs that the joint collaboration between Blue Chyp and JS Air Curtains has delivered. Jason Tothill, from managing agents Norland Managed Services, commented: “We could not be more pleased with the function and performance of the Rotowind air curtains. The added requirement that they should blend aesthetically with the entrance décor has been a triumph for Blue Chyp.”JS Air Curtains’ Rotowind range was designed to meet the specific conditions of a revolving door, which can act as a low-speed fan, forcing a mass of cold air into a room with each rotation. By combining a Rotowind with a revolving door system, cold air is prevented from entering. The main body of the Rotowind air curtain is mounted above the door with the curved air outlets creating a barrier around the inner opening of the doorway. Each unit is created to exactly match the curvature of the specific model of revolving door. The Rotowind is made of aluminium profiles and zinc plated steel panels and nozzle, and was finished in natural anodised silver for Drapers Gardens. The low noise centrifugal double-inlet fans are driven by external rotor motors, with built-in thermal protection, and provide five-speed selection.

JS Air Curtains has recently designed, supplied and installed a pair of bespoke air curtains at Aldwych House in Aldwych London. The installation was part of a refurbishment of the entrance by property specialists, King Sturge. JS Air Curtains worked with King Sturge to design the units to incorporate motion detectors and lighting, whilst complimenting the stainless steel architecture at the entrance of this prestigious London office development. The bespoke air curtains are joined by an overhead stainless steel transom that incorporates four recessed down-lights and a motion detector that activates the automatic sliding door.
