The Joseph Black Building, found in the King’s Buildings Campus at the University of Edinburgh, houses the School of Chemistry and is one of the oldest buildings on the campus. But its existing copper roof covering had come to the end of its natural life. Sika Sarnafil’s flagship Sarnafil Plus refurbishment offer was the perfect solution for this project. Sika Sarnafil Membrane S327-15EL in Patina Green was chosen to replace the old roof covering, as the local authority planning department advised that this product was an acceptable replacement for the original copper roofs on the listed building.

A detailed visual and physical inspection, together with core and moisture probe analysis carried out by IKO on the roof, patio and walkway areas, indicated that the waterproofing membrane was in a condition commensurate with the age and the type of the traditional membranes installed. With roofs in a poor condition the County Council were looking for a phased approach to their refurbishment programme. The school wanted a solution that delivered a robust, long-lasting system that could be quickly and safely installed, from a manufacturer that could provide comprehensive technical support throughout the project. A variety of products from Johnstone’s Trade’s Ecological Solutions range have played their part in ensuring a new £74 million state-of-the-art campus building for Kirklees College has received a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.The team decorated the vast majority of the building’s interior with Johnstone’s Acrylic Durable Matt and Covaplus Vinyl Matt; two core products from the range. In addition, Johnstone’s Satin Finish was used for the interior wood and metalwork, while Johnstone’s Professional Undercoat and Gloss were used to protect the exterior steelwork.

The 16,311 sq ft building on Warwick Street has been stripped back to the core and has undergone a full redevelopment, including redesigned windows and a vibrant green brick façade to grant more architectural definition and visual interest from the street. As a speculative office development, the high level return air option was preferred due to the ease of positioning Fantiles for future tenants as there is no underfloor segregation in the plenum.

The owners wanted to replace the existing windows with steel framed replacements (rather than using an alternative material such as aluminium, which would not retain the slim elegant lines of the existing steel). The Clement EB24 steel window range, with single point locking was chosen by the clients as the most appropriate window, offering almost exact replication of their old windows but with energy saving benefits.

The waiting room at Houton Pier on The Mainland of the Orkney Islands was cold and draughty due to a weather-damaged door opening directly into the waiting area. An extension was built to create a weather break and fitted with record FTA 20 automatic folding doors which minimise the time the door is open to the elements but still provides good access. The doors are activated by a radar presence sensor for two way traffic. The old door was also replaced with a THERMCORD sliding door with energy efficient core panels to further reduce the ingress of cold air.

At 50 years old, and made from timber, the school’s concern was that it would have to be replaced. The Window Film Company was involved in the creation of an eye-catching exhibition at a prominent London gallery. The project involved the installation of coloured film to three large panes of glass, providing the backdrop to an exhibition by up and coming star of the London fashion scene, Molly Goddard. Yellow, pink and orange film was applied to three panels, each measuring 7 metres in height and 2.5 metres in width. The transparent nature of the film means that while the appearance of the glass is changed, the view from both sides of the glass is maintained.

Ancon TeploTie, the innovative low thermal conductivity Wall Tie, has been used in the UK’s first retrofit to achieve zero-carbon Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. TeploTie wall ties are ideal for retrofit projects as they can be resin-fixed into existing walls. The project involved the refurbishment of a semi-detached home, built in the 1840s with solid brick walls. The front elevation is internally insulated to preserve the original brickwork. The U-value of the walls is now 0.11W/mK2, 16 times better than before.
