A combination of bespoke and standard column casings from the Pendock Radius range are being used to conceal structural supports at two John Lewis stores in Liverpool and Manchester’s Trafford Centre.At its Manchester store, a series of square pre-formed plywood column casings finished in durable white laminate, are located throughout each floor with many of the casings in the clothing retail areas are bespoke manufactured and incorporate full height mirrors, which are mounted to the flat surface.Square column casings also feature in the multi-storey Liverpool shop and are also manufactured from pre-formed plywood with a white laminate and aluminium feature joints. In addition, circular column casings, manufactured from laminated preformed plywood, are installed in product display areas, such as menswear.

London Road Retail Park near Biggleswade has a curved canopy supported by steel columns. Metal columns would not suit the look of the shopping park and wooden posts would require frequent maintenance. 22 aluminium casings up to 8 metres high made from 78 semi-circular sections were coated in wood effect finish were produced to enclose the canopy supports. PWF replicates the appearance of wood with variation in colour, grain density and grain pattern. By using PWF, designers can combine the look of wood with the strength and practicality of metal. Expensive timber need not be used, an environmentally sound decision.

More than 40 bespoke column casings from Pendock were installed as part of a £10.5 million refurbishment programme at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre (NEC) to improve the main piazza and facilities.Three different styles of casings were used on the project, the building’s square section structural columns concealed with either circular or extended circular pre-formed ply/MDF casings, finished durable high-pressure laminate (HPL), spanning the floor to ceiling height of around 4 metres.In addition, a series of narrow elliptical casings, finished in red HPL, were manufactured to provide visible signalling of each hall’s entrances. The entrance ‘fins’ also incorporate chrome numbers to identify individual halls.

The MultiFence PAS 68 can stop a 7.5-tonne truck at both 30mph and 40mph. It has been designed to mitigate the security risks at all sites of critical importance, using leading industry technologies to combat attacks by vehicles.It combines the attributes of our standard system with additional testing to ensure it meets the stringent quality standards relating to vehicle restraint systems of BS EN 1317 Part 2. It can be used on both soft and hard ground.Featuring TVCB blocks approved by the Highways Agency for use, it is ideal for security applications at major events, as below-ground foundations are not required.Our RDS PAS68 crash fence system consists of panels and posts installed and removed within minutes. The system uses an RDS block with the appropriate post arrangement. Our RDS PAS68 fence system has been crash-tested and rated to BSI PAS68:2010 standard. This means it can stop 2.5-tonne and 7.5-tonne vehicles.The system provides the product attributes normally only found in permanent installations. In addition, its simple deployment means the on-site disruption usually associated with installing and removing a fence line is kept to a minimum.Zaun also supplied our HiSec 358 anti-climb mesh fencing to combat the issue of intruders being able to scale the fence.InnovationCPNI and the Government were concerned about the threat of a ladder or other climbing aids used to lean against CCTV columns, making it easier to scale the fencing and gain entry into the secure area.Zaun’s solution was to create a number seven style CCTV column and base, which is completely self-supported and mobile and sits back from the fence line. Zaun’s design team created an innovative CCTV column featuring a unique number seven shape. This design meant the CCTV column would project over and outside the fence line, providing excellent visibility and obliterating the external climbing aid threat. The column was constructed from a custom-rolled, lightweight profile; it was also very easily installed on-site. The unique design also included a concrete base comprising a folded steel shell filled with concrete poured on-site. It incorporated forklift holes, ensuring the base is mobile and relocatable easily using a forklift or Moffatt on site.At the top of the base, a fixing system was designed, which allowed the columns to be attached and pivoted and then subsequently raised into the upright position with ease. This system allowed the CCTV installers to mount their cameras and other equipment to the top of the column at ground level before raising the column into place and negates the need for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms or MEWP’s.Zaun designed and manufactured more than 700 CCTV columns and bases to be used at the Commonwealth Games and are deployable for other events.

The striking five-storey building at the Ellesmere Port Campus of West Cheshire College is constructed on a circular plan, which creates a large open space and atrium.From the ground floor to the uppermost level, a series of Pendock Radius metal column casings conceal the structural supports, which provide clean lines that integrate with the interior.

A former HMRC building has been transformed, inside and out, to create Telford’s largest serviced office accommodation with over 52,000 sq.ft of space for 50 offices.As part of the extensive refurbishment programme, the building’s main entrance has also been given a facelift with a new canopy incorporating Radius metal column casings, with a bespoke stepped collar design, as well as bespoke metal bulkheads and fascia's from the Pendock Linea building linings range.

Laminated column casings from the Pendock Radius range are providing a splash of colour, while also concealing structural steelwork at the Virgin Active gym in Islington, London.The 450mm diameter column casings are manufactured from ply/MDF and are each finished with a highly durable high-pressure laminate (HPL) in bright yellow and scarlet to provide an eye-catching solution that integrates with the gym’s contemporary design.Manufactured in ‘quadrants’, each column casing section incorporates a contrasting black shadow gap feature joint, as well as black header and skirting collars. The casings are also used to surface mount large mirrors, while the HPL finish is resistant to scuffs and damage, making it ideal for high-traffic environments

Column casings standing almost 6 metres high are being used at the Porsche Centre in Preston, Lancashire, to conceal interior structural steelwork and utilities within the two-storey main showroom and office area.Manufactured from 3mm thick aluminium with a grey RAL 9007 PPC finish, the twelve 375mm diameter column casings, from the Pendock MET-CL range, incorporate colour matched joint covers, header and skirting collars infills, to integrate with Porsche’s corporate colour scheme.

Artform were approached by Gillespies to explore some ideas for using bespoke granite blocks on this new development at Wapping Wharf. Communication & coordination were key to making sure that the bespoke granite blocks were the precise measurements required for the lighting columns to be fitted correctly. The advice and experience provided by Artform helped to solve problems that other suppliers were unwilling to address or tackle. The particular aspect of this project that was most innovative was utilising the granite block for the functional purpose of a foundation for the lighting column, but in a decorative manner.

TRC Contracts Ltd were awarded the contract for the supply, design and installation of timber Box sash windows and doors fully glazed and factory finished to this 80 million Pound house nearby Regent’s Park. Huxley House’s impressive facade, complete with robust Doric columns, draws its inspiration from the Neoclassical architecture that is a distinct hallmark of nearby Marylebone and Primrose. With their classical columns and decorative friezes, the imposing white stucco houses that abound in these areas reveal the fingerprint of one of Britain’s finest architects, John Nash (1752 – 1835).

The transformation and repurposing of an existing building into new serviced offices in Shropshire is using bespoke manufactured aluminium parapet capping from the Pendock Linea range to provide high-quality finish.Incorporating a slate grey PPC finish, to blend in with the existing column casings that support the canopy, the PC-F style flat parapet capping's are manufactured from 2mm thick aluminium, which resists weatheringPendock carried out all the site surveys, manufacturing and the final installation of the parapet capping's on this project, which involved the removal and re-fitting of the column casings to provide a water-resistant barrier for the brickwork.

A series of column casings from the Pendock Radius range, three of which reach more than 11 metres high, have been installed at the new Extreme Photonic Application Centre (EPAC) building at the Harwell Campus in Didcot, Oxfordshire.Each of the 350mm diameter column casings are manufactured from pre-formed ply/MDF with a durable high pressure laminate finish, which resists scuffing and damage. The casings are stacked to reach the extended heights required to conceal interior structural supports behind the building’s glazed facade.In addition to the three 11 metre high casings, which form part of the main entrance and reception area, the other Pendock Radius casings are located in an adjacent area, which provides access to laboratories and offices.

Our range of products meant all of the fire curtain requirements were met and the fire regulations could be adhered to keep the occupants of the building safe. Coopers FireMaster Concertina is a great way to offer compartmentation between floors and was installed because there were no columns at the atrium to install side guides and there is no smoke extraction system on the atrium so functional gaps were not allowed.

Say goodbye to Bechtel House and hello to 245 Hammersmith Road. Here the external painted concrete soffit of the undercroft was in poor condition. It needed a solution which would require low future maintenance due to its inaccessible position. Two coats of KEIM Soldalit were applied to the soffit for a long-lasting coverage, and KEIM Concretal Lasur applied to each column to create a uniform finish. 

The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester is a 2400 seat concert hall constructed in close proximity to the cities Metrolink tramway. Ground-borne vibration caused by passing trams was highlighted by Arup as going to cause unwanted structural noise within the performance space. To avoid this the building was constructed off 280 number GERB pre-stressable coil spring bearing assemblies positioned on the concrete column heads and tuned with a vertical natural frequency of 3.5Hz.

The Reflections project features multiple freestanding banks of mailboxes combined with LED lighting areas behind frosted glass. Requiring a professional yet comfortable breakout area to welcome distinguished guests including civil servants and senior politicians, the Customer Experience Suite at Cassidian needed a bold and contemporary scheme to reflect the company’s principles of encouraging collaboration and innovation. The creative design solution provided by Paramount Interiors transformed the interiors into an open and well-lit environment with sleek features such as glass partitions and a plane tail rogue column nodding to Cassidian’s aeronautical connections and adding to a futuristic feel.

Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners, Leadenhall Building is a 47 storey office building in the City of London which has affectionately been given the nickname ‘The Cheesegrater’ due to its distinctive tapered profile. The building is designed to protect the views of St Paul’s Cathedral from Fleet Street.As well as offering retail and dining facilities with modern, flexible office space the building sits atop sixteen inclined columns and braces leaving a seven storey landscaped open space at the base of the building, covering nearly half an acre.

Marks & Spencer has a vast distribution centre located in Bradford. Despite its massive size, they still required a new three-storey mezzanine in order to increase their overall storage capacity. With pallet trucks being operated on these floors, Brandsafe were brought in to provide the required custom solution. A combination of 2.4m high security fencing with built-in pedestrian handrail and low-level Armco protection was produced and installed on-site by Brandsafe. Polymer column protectors were also supplied to protect the mezzanine supports at ground level.

This flagship office space, designed from the ground up to cater for the flexible demands of modern business, offers over 100,000 sq ft of Grade A offices, . Bespoke column casings and feature pressings were used throughout this project. Colour and tone have been introduced to give the building richness and depth. The earthy copper tone of the building catches the sunlight, changing its look and feel throughout the day. Sotech worked closely with Axalta and other supply chain partners to develop a bespoke paint formulation for the project.

Fabric Canopies: Two bespoke fabric canopies were supplied to Chobham Academy for their entrance areas. In striking yellow fabric and black framework, the steel was incorporated into the existing building columns to provide shelter and way marking. Each structure has three large sloping fabric sections, measuring 7.7m wide x 5m deep. The vibrant yellow fabric canopies mimic blocks of colour on the building’s fascia.The Challenge:Chobham Academy was designed and developed by Lend Lease on behalf of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and is located on the edge of the new and exciting East Village neighbourhood in Stratford, London. When we were asked to supply entrance canopies for this trend setting academy, born from the most successful Olympic Games of recent years, we knew just how to step up to the challenge. The canopies were being added towards the end of the new build project and needed to merge seamlessly with the newly built classrooms. We had to overcome installation access restrictions, maintain a strict budget and deliver a fun and functional solution on time.The Solution:Our in house engineering team made use of the concrete columns supporting the building’s overhanging roof to take up some of the loads from the fabric canopy. This allowed the new steel masts to be relatively small and fixed directly to the existing building foundations. The financial savings this offered the client made it a winner for all parties.

The award-winning Halle Orchestra has a new home in the city after the completion of a £6.6 million three-storey extension to a former church dating back to 1859. To ensure that the resulting extension would meet the orchestra’s exacting acoustic requirements, Architects Stephenson Studio called in TVS Group. TVS was tasked with designing and installing specialist acoustic flooring together with steelwork isolation pads which sit within the floors to take various column loads. The specialist TVS RESi Concrete Metal Floating Floor was installed over three different rehearsal areas.

The new Muscat International Airport is designed to transform the airport experience not only in the Middle East but on the global stage. A smooth and pleasant customer journey is at the core of the design. Since its conception in 2011, SAS has been heavily involved in realising the aims for each area of the building. SAS has supplied more than 200,000m² of column casing, acoustic wall panelling, staircase cladding and bespoke metal ceilings to the project. Each product has been carefully designed to provide essential acoustic absorption for visitors as well as service integration and accessibility for staff.

Magna Park in Milton Keynes is an extensive distribution and logistics hub, which plays a crucial role for major retailers across the UK and Europe. Units in the park are occupied by the likes of Amazon, John Lewis and River Island. Brandsafe has worked on a number of these buildings, most recently the Latitude warehouse. In order to protect the 12.5m high internal pillars, polymer column protectors with additional forklift impact skirts were supplied and installed by Brandsafe. HGV wheel stops were also provided to protect the building and its occupants from impact damage.

This central public transportation hub has a light-filled, vibrant and inviting atmosphere thanks to light columns – a structurally expressive skylight and walkable glass floor combination that brings sunshine into the building. This innovative solution has met the most demanding requirements for a fire-rated glass floor and skylight to date; 2-hour fire rating, blast, and seismic resistance, plus live loading for foot traffic. It involves horizontal fire-rated glass, structural glass, and spacers with air-gaps to avoid replacing glass due to dirt and condensation issues that would develop with foot traffic and the outdoor environment.

 The RIVEN facing was chosen, in a shade in keeping with the building’s black theme. Black illustrates “strength, considered a virtue of Justice, which uses transparency in the form of large glass walls,” (Jean Nouvel). This external colour dominated by black was used by Jean Nouvel in a modern style associated with the classic shapes of the peristyle and columns of the institutional building.Indeed, the RIVEN look of the CAREA® facing is ideally suited to the central thread of this public project, namely the need for square, mineral, black facing. Moreover, the CAREA® Mineral Composite facing is locally produced, manufactured 80 km north of Nantes in fact.

St. Bartholomew’s Hospital was originally founded in 1123 and the latest design was handled by architects HOK International Ltd, as part of a major redevelopment, which involved the hospital staying open during construction.Key features of the design are four Pendock Radius column casings that span the floor to ceiling height of almost 18 metres, which are located on one side of the main atrium. In addition, a further 65 casings of between 2.7 and 4.1 metres in height were installed on different floors within corridors, waiting rooms and admin areas. All casings were bespoke manufactured.

A combination of Pendock Radius column casings and Pendock Linea pilaster linings are installed at Sheffield’s Royal Hallamshire Hospital to conceal structural supports, hospital services and waste pipework.Manufactured from pre-formed ply/MDF, every bespoke casing is finished in durable and easy-to-clean high-pressure laminate (HPL), which not only resists damage but also supports hygiene regimes.In addition to concealing electrical cabling and pipework for hand washing, the casings also incorporate a range of facilities, such as wash basins, electrical power outlets, light switches and nurse call buttons, which are all mounted to the surface.

Lift shaft fabric feature:A glorious new fabric roof feature is the “Crowning Glory” of an Art Deco style lift shaft at the Exchange Shopping Centre in Ilford. The ‘crown’ of fabric, installed as part of a major refurbishment of the 1980s shopping centre, has a feel of the Statue of Liberty about it, perched high above the ground in the glass roofed central hall.The Challenge:Despite its bold Art Deco design with gold trimmed columns, the double lift platform didn’t quite look finished. Architects Dunnet Craven specified an aesthetic canopy, enhanced by coloured LED lighting to provide a high level focal point as part of the refurbishment of the West Mall. Working at height was to be the biggest challenge. The lift shaft fabric roof could only be accessed from the third floor of the building and only from one side.The Solution: Fabric Architecture designed an aluminium, halo-shaped frame, which bolted to the lift shaft columns. Four new steel supports were bolted to the lift shaft roof to provide an anchor point for 18 small cables. These cables were key in holding the Crown in place, giving the appearance when viewed from below, that it is just hovering in mid air. The lightweight fabric roof feature overhangs the top of the lifts by 5m which meant the only way to install it was by powered access boom (cherry picker) and rope access. Our trained team of riggers used ropes and pullies to lower themselves and their equipment into position. They love nothing more than dangling 17m above the ground and made quick work of the tricky installation. A 100% polyester fabric canopy in white was fitted directly to the lightweight aluminium frame. LED lights illuminate the canopy, giving it a soft opaque glow.

Mega Balance is the new adjustable height pedestal for paving and decking systems that does three jobs all in one. Firstly it achieves both the ultra heavy duty weight tolerance of the Wallbarn Megapad by tolerating over 2 tonnes per unit before breaking and having a self-levelling headpiece for smoother, more high end surface finishes. Secondly, it can become both a self-levelling or a fixed headed pedestal within the same unit by adding "the grey nut". By inserting and locking into place the grey nut into the centre of the headpiece, users can lock off the head to create a more rigid pedestal. Instead of having to order different pedestals to create these changes, both options are available in the same product. Thirdly, when paving, a brilliant new mechanism is provided to deal with rocking or moving slabs over time on paving areas. Slabs will often move over time for various reasons (structural movement, traffic etc.) and operatives have traditionally had to lift multiple slabs, adjust the height of the pedestals and then relay the slabs. Now, using "the yellow key" major labour saving and health & safety improvements are gained. Insert the yellow key into a small slot in the centre of the headpiece to turn the thread of the pedestal and adjust the height with the slab still in position.Mega Balance is available with a standard paving headpiece, a decking joist headpiece and a clip headpiece designed to hold Wallbarn's profiled aluminium rail. Added benefits include steeper, narrower weight bearing fins on the outside of the central column which means the bases can be cut back closer to that column for paving up tot he wall or parapet. A stronger, tidier finish on such details is achieved.Mega Balance offers much greater flexibility and scope for constructing suspended paving and decking schemes.

Tensile Canopy:Queens Park Community School is a large mixed academy with over 1200 students. The school is committed to high standards and invests heavily in maintaining good levels of teaching, learning and the school environment. Amongst the latest rounds f improvements to the school grounds, tensile structures were installed by Fabric Architecture to provide additional shelter and outside learning space for pupils. The form of the canopy is an adaptation of FabArc's Signature Structure 'Halo' design, linking 4 canopies together to create a 12m x 12m structure, with just 1 integral column, providing around 140m2 of shade and shelter. The structure's steel work is powder-coated in bright red, the school's brand colour, to tie in with other steel on site including the framework of some newly installed bicycle racks. A complimentary cream PVC fabric was chosen for it's durability and long life-expectancy.

Merchant Square was the largest Grade A office development ever to be undertaken in Belfast at the time of completion. Aluprof systems were used to help transform an existing office block with a completely new building envelope. The building has been entirely let to PwC and is their biggest office space outside of London with 3,000 employees.The external envelope was completed using Aluprof's MB-SE75 unitised curtain wall facade system and was then specified in an anodised finish, which then contrasts with the external Corten steel used in a vertical column emphasis to meet the architects design. With the rise in use of unitised curtain wall systems for medium sized projects, this option is becoming a real alternative to a traditional curtain wall solution, especially as costs are becoming more competitive. Unitised systems can also offer up to a 50% reduction in installation periods which can offer significant savings on the project programme.

The Hive is a new creativity & innovation hub, built alongside the existing structures of Headington School and designed to ensure that creative thinking is established as the heart of a Headington Students education.Designed by LSH Architects, the 23,000 sq. ft building consists of sculpture studios, kiln room, photographic facilities, textile studios and 3 artist studios, with media editing suites and a Cinemax screening room also being included. Other facilities specifically suited to a range of creative outputs have been carefully and cleverly built into the project. To enable a sense of openness, high ceilings are used throughout the buildings and the gallery space is further enhanced to allow vast columns of light to permeate the area.Michelmersh’s Hampshire Red Stock Multi ATR was supplied via EH Smith and helped settle the building into the verdant, green backdrop and give the building a warm, comforting feel, as well as allowing the building to fit snugly within the landscape created by the surrounding buildings.
