The University of Birmingham Library

Bailey - Total Building Envelope

The construction of the external envelope was an important part of the library’s transformation. The building has a contemporary aesthetic, which houses innovative learning tools alongside traditional resources for studying in the 21st Century and beyond. Bailey Rainscreen Cladding was fitted to the front of the library and adds vibrancy to the building, which sits at the heart of the University campus. Associated Architects chose Bailey to supply the metal cladding for the project due to its team’s expert technical knowledge and ability to respond creatively to a brief.

Accoya chosen for a private residence in Cairngorms National Park


Accoya was selected as the ideal cladding material for the residence of a home in East Scotland. Supplied by Russwood, the Accoya cladding was vacuum coated to limit the heat loss of the building. Accoya was chosen for this project due to its attractive aesthetic appearance, low maintenance and sustainable credentials. The building is laid to limit heat loss and beneficially utilise solar gain. The house also uses an extensive control system allowing users to operate the lights or adjust the room temperature from their Smartphones.

Johnstone’s Trade’s products have been the driving force behind a striking new-look Mini dealership. For the exterior metal cladding, Johnstone’s Metal Defence System Steel & Cladding Topcoat in black was used to provide excellent protection from corrosion, ensuring the building will continue to stand out for years to come. Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt, specified in both off white and orange, was applied to the dealership’s interior to showcase the superb cars on show, with a superb finish free from flashing.

Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre, VIC


The refurbishment of the Victoria Gardens shopping centre designed by Colab Design Studio uses Sculpform's Aluminium Click-on Batten system to create a stunning curved Oculus, along with feature walls and ceilings throughout the centre. Sculptform’s Click-on batten system provided a unique solution that could be customised to address the incredibly complex geometry of the existing architecture. Being able to use the same system for the mall cladding, mall ceiling installations and the oculus cladding ensured absolute consistency across the entire centre.

Fixfast provided high corrosion resistant (HCR) fasteners to ensure the roofing and cladding around the swimming pool remained in place despite the high chlorine corrosion risk.

Accoya selected for the Bradford Royal Infirmary


Accoya was chosen as the project required a striking facade which complimented the existing traditional stone Temple Bank House. Accoya was also selected due to the fact it is low maintenance & provides warmth & natural textures. 15 mm planks were chosen for the cladding to ensure minimum wastage in the manufacturing making it as cost effective as possible. The client was very impressed with how well the cladding cloaks, shields and invites, addressing the road facing elevations and drawing the occupants around the building to its entrance which sits in relief.

Accoya is the environmental choice for Italian alpine villa


Designed by Camillo Botticini Architetto, Accoya was selected to fulfil the owner’s requirement for an eco-friendly property. Accoya was used for the for cladding & was chosen because it is one of the most durable & stable products on the market. Building materials such as Accoya offer an opportunity to build something which had little impact on the environment and would help it to blend in. Accoya works both by supporting the environmental objectives of the build, while also providing a strong, cladding which is able to withstand wet winters & hot summers with little maintenance compared to competitor products.

Bilco Roof Access Hatches & Smoke Vents Chosen for the Glasgow Transport Museum

Bilco UK’s special zinc-clad Roof Access Hatches and Smoke Vents chosen for the Zaha Hadid designed Glasgow Transport Museum, Scotland. The roof specification included Smoke Vents and Roof Access to blend with the roof finish. Bilco supplied modified units with zinc cladding to achieve the desired look. To enable safe roof maintenance, a modified E-50T Hatch was supplied and installed to the 46 degree sloping roof enabling maintenance staff to gain easy, safe access to roof equipment

Acoustic Woven Wire Mesh at Luxembourg Municipal Theatre

To give the Théâtre Municipal in Luxembourg a new and modern look, the walls are clad with architectural mesh type MINIFLEX 8135. For the renovation the architecural concept had to be adapted to existing structures of the theatre. Amongst others the cladding of the proscenium walls had to be renewed and meet the current arrangement of the building. HAVER & BOECKER supplied cut elements in a standard size of 1350 x 1365 mm, which were notched at all four corners. The mesh panels were then attached to medium density fibreboard with sound absorption material in between.

First fully inspired Cradle to Cradle development in the Netherlands


First fully inspired Cradle to Cradle development in the Netherlands uses Accoya Cladding. The Bosch Siemens HOME (B/S/H) office, called The Inspiration House, is the first building designed for Park 20|20 (the first Cradle to Cradle-inspired full-service development in the Netherlands). The Inspiration House 20|20 was designed by architect William McDonough with Michael Braungart, the founder of the cradle-to-cradle movement. Accoya wood was chosen for the external cladding and windows because it is the only wood product that has achieved the prestigious Cradle to Cradle Gold Certification.

Júlia Center Perfumery is visually enhanced with IMAGIC WEAVE transparent media façade. The woven wire mesh cladding made of 300 m² of HAVER Architectural Mesh EGLA-DUO 4212 Vario covers about three-quarters of the whole façade. 1250 LED profiles are discreetly attached to the reverse side of 17 mesh elements transforming the cladding into a giant advertising screen. IMAGIC WEAVE® HO receives the luminosity due to the THT LED profiles with six LEDs per pixel demonstrating its quality even in bright sunlight.

Accoya selected for the National Institute of Forest Science, Korea


Accoya selected for the cladding & decking of the new Forest of Genetic Resource Department, Korea. To date, this project marks the largest wooden scale structure in the whole of Korea. Because of this iconic status the construction had to ensure that the most advanced materials such as Accoya were chosen. Due to the project being 4 storeys high Accoya was selected for its extreme durability & stability. Designed by IDS architects, Accoya was also chosen because of its natural & bespoke aesthetic. Due to Accoya’s light appearance the cladding could be painted to satisfy the designers requirements.

When Bill and Angie first moved to Thorpe in 2002, 10 years later and with their retirement in sight, they knew they had their dream location, but refurbishing the existing building would have been challenging. They opted for a self-build bungalow design by Kingspan Potton called the Dartmoor, a stylish design with cladding. Bill explains his choice: ‘We wanted our home to have a contemporary look and to achieve this cladding was a must. We looked at all the options including HardiePlank® and for us it was an easy decision; quick to install, cost effective and beautiful’

HardiePlank®: Unique Seaside Regeneration

The facade of Rollercoaster House is made up of render, a curtain wall system and HardiePlank® cladding. It is the first time that site manager David Tomlinson has worked with the product, who states that the coastal environment conditions were the main factor when deciding which type of cladding to use. ‘With timber, David says, ‘however good a product you are going to get, it wouldn’t have had the same lifespan as HardiePlank at the end of the day. PVC discolours, especially the darker colours, but I am expecting and hoping that HardiePlank will stand the test of time.’

MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME Proves The Natural Choice At High - End Coastal Redevelopment.


At a high specification and ultra-modern residential project in Newquay, Cornwall, approximately 100m2 of MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME was used in the creation of an aesthetically stunning and water retardant external façade that perfectly complements the beach house’s cedar cladding. During the extension and refurbishment of ‘The Moorings’, a private home on the Cornish coast, self-builder David Wring required a highly versatile and water retardant wood cladding system. The high performance and extremely durable MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME was chosen to provide an attractive finish and long term weather resistance against the effects of saltwater and UV exposure.

Seen in Grand Designs, the ‘Larch House’ is part of a professional development that sits next to the ‘Zinc House’. The complete envelope of this building is wrapped in Siberian Larch. Millworks supplied extra long lengths to set sizes. Therefore, the roof and walls have no joints – leaving the cladding clean and clinical. Millworks supplied the ‘Grade A’ Siberian Larch manufactured to exacting standards. The layout of cladding is planed all round (PAR) with a 10mm shadow gap – for added detail. Port Glasgow Shared Campus - Port Glasgow

Dryvit Outsulation external wall insulation (EWI) system incorporating Dryvit's cost effective metal effect speciality finish, Reflectit, was utilised to clad to large feature pods within atrium spaces in the Port Glasgow High School and St Stephens’s High School. Completed in 2013. Outsulation was used in place of the originally specified zinc cladding which proved to difficult and costly to install. Dryvit speciality finishes often provide cost alternatives to metal, stone, brick or wood facade systems while delivering energy efficient walls compositions.
