170-bedroom airport hotel gets two blinds to every window

Astralux Blind System

This new Hyatt Place hotel in Hayes serves travellers using Heathrow Airport. Created from an unprepossessing 1960s office block the hotel features 170 bedrooms, 24-hour restaurant facilities and meeting rooms. Dearnleys were contracted to provide shading systems to effectively control the light to the bedroom spaces and installed 2 blinds to every bedroom window. An Astralux 3000 roller blind with screen fabric filtered daylight and an Astralux 4000 room darkening blind provided the dim-out required for sleeping.

Carnegie Pavilion, Headingley

Astralux Blind System

This £21m development created a world class media and players' facilities and teaching space all under one roof. Astralux blinds were used and as the glazing slopes outwards a cassetted zip system was specified. This clever roller blind has zips welded to the edge of the fabric which run in the side channels of the blind. This ensures the blind always runs square and is ideal for sloping glazing as the blind is permanently guided. A FR screen fabric was used in most areas to effectively control light levels and solar gain but also allowing a view to the outside.

Manchester One

Astralux Blind System

This building which is now known as Manchester One was completed in 1962 and at that time its height of 80m made it one of the tallest buildings in the UK. As part of a £2m re-development of the 21 floors a new reception was created. Blinds were required to reduce heat and light gain in this highly glazed reception space. Pentel proposed the Astralux 3000 heavy duty roller blind system with just three blinds required to shade over 50 square metres of curtain walling.

Overheating library is no sweat for Dearnleys

Astralux Blind System

Visitors to Horsforth Library in Leeds were having difficulty using the computers due to too much glare. In addition, in the summer the solar gain through the roof glazing was making the library uncomfortably hot. Dearnleys proposed the Astralux 6000 louvre blind system which is ideal for sloping glazing as the slats are securely held on rack arms. These arms allow the slats to be tilted to control light and glare. At this site the blinds were operated by a detachable crank handle but motorisation is also available.

HSE Headquarters

Astralux Blind System

Astralux Systems dealer, Pentel Contracts, were involved with the architect and contractor some two years before the first piece of ground was broken on site at the headquarters of the Health & Safety Executive. The Astralux 5000 tensioned roller blind system is a proven solution for atria installations and was used at this site to control glare and heat to both the main atrium, 13m from floor level and a circular rooflight. In total 140 blind systems were installed covering an area of glazing of some 2,500 square metres. Operation was by localised group operation with radio controlled (wireless) switches.

Astralux Blind System

The Clifton Campus at Nottingham Trent University has recently undergone a major investment programme to enhance the facilities for the 8,000 students who are based at this site. Part of this multi-million pound spend was the creation of The Pavilion, a space for students to meet and study with full height glazing flooding the space with light. To help control light and glare the lower sections of the curtain walling were shaded by Dearnleys using the Astralux 3000 roller system. These blinds were fitted with screen fabric with a 1% openness.

The project team installed over 280 TESS™ systems in phases over three months in line with the construction programme. Guthrie Douglas were engaged by BIPP-BIPP SA to collaborate on design concept development, the feasibility study including wind resistance testing, system manufacture, on-site installation training, and post-completion support.

The Florentinum, Prague

Guthrie Douglas

The curved glass façade created challenges for the management of light and shade and the need to ensure the optimum comfort for users. The TESS™ 400 external system was chosen and aligned to the structural glass design. It uses relieving rollers to allow the blind to flow around the curve and small ultra-thin cable to keep the fabric tensioned. When fitted to the external façade of the Florentinum it allowed the architectural effect of the curve to remain striking even when the blinds were deployed, as well as working as a heat shield on hotter days.
