The University of Oxford’s Wadham College graduate centre project was a complex refurbishment. Led by Lee Fitzgerald Architects and main contractor Feltham Construction it involved the careful restoration, adaptation and extension of the 1960’s grade II listed building

Set within the Garscbue Estate, Archial Group, the Architect, wanted a new build project with as minimal visual impact as possible, so the building was constructed within the side of a hill with a green roof. Towards the end of the roof’s construction a seeded grass finish was opted for.

Situated in the picturesque village of Tintern in Monmouthshire, the Cistercian abbey is one of the most historic monastic ruins in Wales. In 2013 work started at the abbey to replace the roof of the gift shop, which had exceeded its serviceable life. The brief for this project was to not only repair the failing roof, but to bring the abbey to the forefront of modern-day roofing technology with the installation of a state-of-the-art photovoltaic (PV) system. Given these requirements, BauderSOLAR’s innovative PV solution, SOLfixx Plus, was a natural choice.

Hethel Engineering Centre supports high performance engineering companies located throughout Norfolk. The original building at the centre had been operating at maximum capacity and they urgently required a new building to satisfy increasing levels of demand. The client wanted the new facility to meet a high level of sustainability, achieving a BREEAM excellent rating and using key renewable technologies, such as photovoltaics (PV), to minimise its environmental impact.

Morris Blitz Court is a residential housing estate in Hackney that has undergone an extensive amount of refurbishment works as part of the Decent Homes Programme.

Formed in 2006 after the amalgamation of the CBS Boys School and Convent Girls School, Scoil Phadraig National School is situated in the heart of Westport. Being the largest school in the town, it now provides education to over 300 children. The constant increase in the number of pupils enrolling at the school soon called for a new building to cater for all its students.

ROM Ltd is a specialist manufacturer of reinforcement solutions that has facilities located throughout the UK and Ireland. The waterproofing on the roof of their Sheffield manufacturing facility had exceeded its serviceable life and the main-substructure was extremely corroded leaving it unstable and requiring urgent remedial work.

The impressive Belvedere Court 4-storey building, which was converted from a hotel into 16 prestigious residential apartments in 2008, recently underwent further development including extensions for additional accommodation, basement housing, a communal swimming pool, a theatre and an underground car park.

A number of the building’s roofs at Roundwood Park School needed refurbishing to prevent further water ingress entering the classrooms below. The client wanted the new waterproofing system to be of high quality and provide falls to the roof to help mitigate ponding water. A no capital outlay PV solution and new rooflights were also desired as part of the works to optimise the roofs functionality. The school remained open throughout the project creating logistical challenges.

As part of the £26 million refurbishment of this Grade II listed residential estate, which features a continuous block of over 600 properties, work was performed to not only repair the existing roof but to bring Byker Wall to the forefront of modern day roofing technology with the installation of a state-of-the-art photovoltaic system.

The original waterproofing on the Maternity Hospital roof had exceeded its serviceable life and begun experiencing water ingress, requiring urgent remedial work. Bristol City Council wanted to optimise the roof area by installing a high quality, long lasting PV array that would contribute to its Solar City scheme that aims to provide one gigawatt of solar power to Bristol by 2020. The installation needed to cause minimal disruption to ongoing work at the hospital and insulation upgrades were necessary to ensure the roof achieved the required 0.25 U-Value.

JCB’s World HQ in Rocester recently completed a major project to improve the integrity of its main office roof, and took the opportunity to reduce the company’s overall environmental impact through the addition of a state-of-the-art photovoltaic system at the same time.

A brand new school on the outskirts of Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk was built to accommodate 1,600 students. The project was designed and managed by Concertus Design & Property Consultants on behalf of Suffolk County Council, who wanted the school to act as a benchmark for sustainability with the building’s roofs playing an integral part in achieving this through the inclusion of solar panels.

The replacement bus station and regeneration of the surrounding area has created a unique and distinctive city centre building for the town. The design connects with Gloucester’s Roman heritage and association with aviation.

Lagg Distillery, located on the Isle of Arran in Scotland, is a new build whiskey distillery which opened its doors to the public for the first time in the autumn of 2019. The client was eager to create an iconic landmark and echo the contours of Arran with a roof scape that would blend into the environment.

Marischal square is a mixed use complex in the centre of Aberdeen based on the site of the former council headquarters building, St. Nicholas House. In 2011 Muse Developments undertook a £107m redevelopment of the site creating space for two new office buildings, seven restaurants and café bars, a 126-room hotel, a modern civic space and a new public space area in between the new buildings.

The roof area was badly damaged by heavy storms, with all existing ballasted solar panels lifting off the single ply roof and destroyed beyond repair. The client needed the remedial work completed to fixed deadlines in order to comply with insurance requirements, and wanted to optimise the roof by replacing the pre-existing photovoltaic (PV) array with a solar solution that would deliver superior energy generation. The office also had to remain operational throughout the works, creating logistical challenges

A notable feature on the University of Manchester campus is the Samuel Alexander Building - a five storey Grade II listed building. Erected in 1919 the building has been excellently conserved, however one element that required urgent attention was its flat roof, which had been experiencing considerable water ingress.

The University of the West of England (UWE) quadrupled its solar generating capacity through the installation of 1,731 solar panels, enabling it to produce over 400 MWh of electricity each year and making it the largest solar panel array in the UK university sector.

At the new £11.2 million integrated policing facility at Kittybrewster in Aberdeen, Balfour Beatty required a high performance roofing system for the 4,518m2 building. As on-going partner of the main contractor, BriggsAmasco was appointed to deliver a highly skilled and efficient application including waterproofing, sedum mats and 60 rooflights. With the project aiming for a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’, a complex roof system comprising green roof, waterproofing and rooflights was specified. BriggsAmasco carried out the full installation, incorporating the versatile, cost-effective and lightweight Bauder green roof system.
