Its smooth finish makes it ideal for a modern, minimalist design that can be easily combined with materials like wood and ceramic.

Our small bathroom design may only be 160 x 170cm, but for me, it’s perfectly formed in every way. You can reach both arms across and touch either side of the room, but that’s not actually what you immediately notice when you step through the door. Instead, you see a generous frameless skylight flooding the space with natural light, a wall of tactile sage green tiles and the unusual choice of a green sink paired with an off white floating vanity unit. I spent so long considering all the little details – from matching my grout to my silicone, to lining up the tiles perfectly – that size, here, really doesn’t matter.There’s a lot I learnt during the process of designing my own small bathroom design, so I thought I would share all my lessons and top tips in case you’re planning a space of a similar size. We don’t all have huge mansions, bedrooms we can convert into bathrooms or space enough for a roll-top bath and a shower. Most of us are working with tricky layouts and tight floorpans, trying to maximise the space we’ve got. Don’t be disheartened with your small bathroom, there’s a lot you can do to make it feel light, airy, uplifting and inspiring.

IssueA 15-year-old bathroom in a housing development was looking tired and dated and the owner wanted to refresh the area with minimal disruption in a quick timescale. The bathroom had three walls of ceramic tiles, and a sink splashback, which were in good condition but were unfashionable and required high levels of maintenance to remove limescale and mould.The property, a first floor flat, had easy access but no lift, so equipment, materials and any waste needed to be carried up and down the stairs.Approach“We wanted to replace the ceramic tiles, without having to re-plaster the bathroom walls which would mean a complete renovation and redecoration project,” said Helen Green, the owner. “We live in an area with hard water and limescale is a real problem so a wall that is easy to keep clean would be ideal.”SolutionAfter liaising with Altro customer services, the new Altro Walls ShowerKit was recommended as being the ideal solution as the wall panels can be installed over existing ceramic tiles and provides ease of maintenance for residents. There is also no requirement for construction materials or heavy equipment as Altro Walls ShowerKit is lighter to transport than ceramic tiles.

Lazenby were asked to manufacture 80 completely bespoke pre cast concrete sinks for a new build office block in Kings Cross.The sinks were used in the male and female washrooms throughout all floors of the building. The sizes ranged from a 1900mm double vanity through to a 4 metre long, quintuple sink unit.All the units were cast with tap holes and a cut out for an undermounted bin chute. The joints were carefully placed to run through the cut outs to help make them as discreet as possible.The clients were looking to create a statement piece and so Lazenby created a bespoke blue colour that matched their vision. Multiple samples were created in a variety of shades before the final colour was selected.The durability and flexibility of concrete make it the perfect solution for busy washroom environments.

A large number of Decimetric modular stainless steel sinks, from GEC Anderson, were specified for the Environmental Science Laboratory at The University of Liverpools new Central Teaching Laboratories (CTL) for the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The specification called for a high performance and durable solution that was easy to maintain.Decimetric sinks provide a flexible and versatile framework of sizes in 100mm x 100mm increments so as to enable versatility and easy specification. This particular project required large double sink bowls (400 x 400 x 250m deep) set in 1400 x 600mm tops. Each sink was fitted with GEC Anderson V220 Sand Traps to collect solids and to prevent blockages.The bulk of the sinktops were installed on the first floor Environmental Science Laboratory situated in the East Wing. They run the full length of the windowed wall and provide washing facilities for 170 individual work stations.The client demanded high specification of internal fittings and a high concentration of laboratory fittings which would endure heavy usage during their life time. Hard wearing and highly functional, the professional grade brushed satin stainless steel tops provide a long life with very low maintenance. Torsten Bauszus from ADP LLP Architects said, GECA were chosen for their ability to provide modular, professional grade stainless steel tops with no joints at the sink which will make them very easy to clean and maintain.

The bathroom is ultra modern in feel. It features a beautiful freestanding bath on a perfect white expanse of floor.

Made-to-measure brushed satin stainless steel sinks and worktops, from GEC Anderson, have been installed in the breathing apparatus rooms, kit cleaning rooms and kitchens of the new Winchester Fire Station.The station relocated from its home of 74 years at North Walls to its new state-of-art facility inEaston Lane, Winnall,Winchester. The new five-bay fire station is operationally and strategically located on the outskirts of the city on a major access route, close to the M3. The new facility can accommodate 70-plus personnel and provides a continuously crewed facility as opposed to the previous just day-crewed arrangement, thus providing faster emergency cover over a greater area.Freestanding worktops, totalling more than 10 metres, were installed in the breathing apparatus (BA) room and kit cleaning area of the fire station. Industrial sized sinks were included to provide an effective washing facility for the fire crews specialist equipment. Sarah Collins, architect for Hampshire County Councils Property Services Department said, The specialised sinks were chosen for their ability to cope with an environment of high usage. We wanted a material that was robust enough to take the everyday knocks and last for the lifetime of the building. GEC Anderson sinks certainly met this requirement and are performing extremely well.

We were first involved with a bathroom project for Brooke when she was 7 years old. Now a teenager, Brooke's bathroom has recently been updated.

The danish interior designer and influencer Emil Thorup is the master behind this stunning heritage apartment in Østerbro. The space embraces a classic herringbone parquet and bright walls that makes every room light up. The balance is reached through the edgy details, that gives the classic apartment a younger feel. For the bathroom, Emil used products in brushed stainless steel from the Qtoo collection.

As we face post-lockdown life, what might the future look like for UK bathroom design? Here, Sophie Weston, channel marketing manager at Geberit, discusses what the ‘new normal’ bathroom could be - and how existing product design and innovation can help shape the future for housebuilders and developers.

GEC Anderson stainless steel worktops were recently specified by Architects, Dannatt Johnson within the new Learning Spaces and Tea Points within the historic and acclaimed museum. Working for kitchen and bathroom specialists, Brandt Kitchens, GEC Anderson supplied and installed a total of four areas, all within the remit of main contractor, Buxton Building.  Bespoke stainless steel worktops were deployed in two Tea Point and two Learning Spaces. GEC Anderson were able to meet the special detailing requirements prescribed for the various units. 5.0mm SolidTop worktops were specified for the Tea Points that included double sinks and provision for Zip hot water taps and drip trays. In the Learning Spaces, made to measure sink tops with lipped edges and integral back upstands were located in ‘hide away’ areas, behind sliding door sections of the rooms. Managing Director of GEC Anderson comments “This was a really nice project to have been involved with and, actually, is a great showcase of some of the many options that we are able to offer. For instance, in the Learning Space on Level 2, special sized sink bowls were required to fit within the bespoke [narrow] space available, whilst at the same time having space for our lipped edge detail (3) at the front and sides of the worktop perimeter, as well as our upstand edge (10) at the back.  Meanwhile, in the Tea Points, we had the exiting new 5.0mm SolidTops (solid stainless steel, as opposed to the normal, folded, edges). The result of using this detail is always striking with its slim simplicity of form.”

High-end residential refurbishment that required MicroCement installation to all internal walls and floors in two family bathrooms. This large scale, refurbishment project showcased innovative ways MicroCement can be applied to interior bathroom walls and floors without a need for joins or breaks. Its smooth finish was ideal for a modern, minimalist design that our client wanted. MicroCement can be easily installed over existing materials which in turn reduces the time needed for application and maintenance.We also supplied and installed two large precast and hand-polished concrete washbasins that were done in Mist Silk finish. They were treated with our in-house sealant and made to be stain-resistant.

Private Clinic Blomenburg stands for holism when it comes to the therapy and design concept.A haven in the middle of a beautiful environment in the north of Germany: The 19th Century Blomenburg („Burg“ for castle), is surrounded by a huge park. Away from the everyday hustle and bustle, offering 69 furnished in premium quality, spacious single rooms and suites. The modern bathrooms are equipped with KEUCO furnishings and complement the syntonic interior design. The exclusive design of the indoor rooms is not to be compared with the magnificence of the outside of the buildings.Noble materials and luxurious items of furniture in the guest rooms create an ideal setting for convalescence and relaxation. This temporary home equipped with KEUCO furnishings and accessories in the bathroom offer the guests plenty of storage space for personal care products. Not only do the PLAN vanity unit and tall unit in unobtrusive truffle offer generous storage space, but the light mirror with a frame offers additional storage space. A spacious bathroom with floor-level shower and bathtub, a bedroom flooded with light and a practical working space: the Belfqihs have achieved their own very personal dream residence through a large-scale conversion of their home. After their children had left home, Kordula and Mohammed Belfqih decided to renovate the upper storey of their home in Krefeld, restructuring it completely at the same time. It all started with the desire for a modern and comfortable bathroom. One perfectly tuned to the needs of the new two-person household: the married couple imagined light, spacious rooms on their newly designed floor. Planner Bettina Bickert from Plankreis, Krefeld (www.plankreis.com) was given the exciting task of creating a new living atmosphere. Jane Valentine’s brief for this project was to create a contemporary bathroom whilst honouring the original elements of a Victorian-style home built in 1867.Beautiful white walls act as the perfect canvas for striking matt black tapware and a black framed shower screen. It is possible to support heavy doors with fewer hinges than with conventional ones.Support 800 mm wide doors with just two hinges!A luxury hotel in Korea used the J95 concealed hinge for the bathroom sink plumbing maintenance door. Due to the 800 mm width of the door, it was necessary to use at least three conventional hinges, but with the J95, only two were needed. Since only two J95 hinges are required, it creates a cleaner and more visually appealing appearance. Additionally, since the same type of maintenance door was needed throughout the hotel, using only two hinges greatly decreased the overall installation time.

This particular project was a private residential bathroom in the architects own house. The client wanted a linear channel, but the joist layout prevented the use of a traditional single gradient tray with the drainage at one end, so instead we opted for the wedi "Riofino" shower tray with a central channel with a tileable insert as you can see above.The build also includes the use of our pre-formed wedi "niche" and wedi building boards on all the walls and floor coupled with our 360 and 610 adhesives for the complete system solution and warranty.

Built in the 1990’s, Carden Park is Cheshire’s privately-owned country hotel. A £10m luxury spar and gym facilities opened in 2019. Farr & Harris Ltd, trusted retailer for bathroom suites, were involved in the project.The hotel required modern, quality bathroom products for their hotel, spa and gym to reflect the contemporary décor but water saving was also imperative.Farr & Harris approached us after successfully installing mains operated taps at the hotel previously. This time around, they were interested in our touch-free taps. Our specifications team met with the client to discuss our full range and their features and benefits. We presented our Electroflo infra-red linear range for consideration. The client liked the hygienic aspect and the sleek minimalist style. Islington Wharf apartments are new build homes situated near Manchester city centre. The development features over 40 apartment variations ranging from one bed apartments to four bed family homes.We were tasked with providing quality, innovative bathroom products for the new development. Our specifications team immediately rose to the challenge.Face to face meetings took place with the client to understand their requirements. Discussions then proceeded with the product and design teams at TYDE and options were presented. The continuous stainless steel worktop installed behind the main serving counter of the Café Bar incorporates sinks, plinth, cupboards doors and splashbacks, all in brushed satin stainless steel.

During the hotel’s modernisation, interior designer and architect Manfred Ronstedt successfully created a pleasant living environment, through carefully chosen interiors. With the natural materials and gentle colours, the unique location and the wonderful natural setting of the area acted as inspiration for the design of the high quality furnishings in the rooms and suites. Wood and colours such as sand, truffle, gold and brown dominate the room design. Whilst selecting the products, Manfred Ronstedt of Ronstedt hotel concepts placed strong emphasis on the timeless elegance: "The accessories and fittings from KEUCO harmonise perfectly with the design concept of the hotel rooms – a modern ambience of well-being.“The exclusive bathroom furnishings include generously-sized showers, and some also have a bath tub. Hamburg architect Jan Störmer's design of The Fontenay luxury hotel is an homage to the Hanseatic city. The sculptural and organic circle-shaped architecture successfully achieves a balance between the urban character of the city and its natural surroundings.
