Our small bathroom design may only be 160 x 170cm, but for me, it’s perfectly formed in every way. You can reach both arms across and touch either side of the room, but that’s not actually what you immediately notice when you step through the door. Instead, you see a generous frameless skylight flooding the space with natural light, a wall of tactile sage green tiles and the unusual choice of a green sink paired with an off white floating vanity unit. I spent so long considering all the little details – from matching my grout to my silicone, to lining up the tiles perfectly – that size, here, really doesn’t matter.There’s a lot I learnt during the process of designing my own small bathroom design, so I thought I would share all my lessons and top tips in case you’re planning a space of a similar size. We don’t all have huge mansions, bedrooms we can convert into bathrooms or space enough for a roll-top bath and a shower. Most of us are working with tricky layouts and tight floorpans, trying to maximise the space we’ve got. Don’t be disheartened with your small bathroom, there’s a lot you can do to make it feel light, airy, uplifting and inspiring.

IssueA 15-year-old bathroom in a housing development was looking tired and dated and the owner wanted to refresh the area with minimal disruption in a quick timescale. The bathroom had three walls of ceramic tiles, and a sink splashback, which were in good condition but were unfashionable and required high levels of maintenance to remove limescale and mould.The property, a first floor flat, had easy access but no lift, so equipment, materials and any waste needed to be carried up and down the stairs.Approach“We wanted to replace the ceramic tiles, without having to re-plaster the bathroom walls which would mean a complete renovation and redecoration project,” said Helen Green, the owner. “We live in an area with hard water and limescale is a real problem so a wall that is easy to keep clean would be ideal.”SolutionAfter liaising with Altro customer services, the new Altro Walls ShowerKit was recommended as being the ideal solution as the wall panels can be installed over existing ceramic tiles and provides ease of maintenance for residents. There is also no requirement for construction materials or heavy equipment as Altro Walls ShowerKit is lighter to transport than ceramic tiles.

Lazenby were asked to manufacture 80 completely bespoke pre cast concrete sinks for a new build office block in Kings Cross.The sinks were used in the male and female washrooms throughout all floors of the building. The sizes ranged from a 1900mm double vanity through to a 4 metre long, quintuple sink unit.All the units were cast with tap holes and a cut out for an undermounted bin chute. The joints were carefully placed to run through the cut outs to help make them as discreet as possible.The clients were looking to create a statement piece and so Lazenby created a bespoke blue colour that matched their vision. Multiple samples were created in a variety of shades before the final colour was selected.The durability and flexibility of concrete make it the perfect solution for busy washroom environments.

Iconic pink bathrooms inspired by 1970s design.Situated at the heart of the Belgian capital is The Hoxton, a distinctive and inspiring hotel within an old, brutalist-style tower building. Combining modern luxury with historical design, The Hoxton features a unique, sophisticated style. Keeping the history of the building intact both inside and out, developer Ennismore alongside designer AIME Studios, opted for a 70s-inspired theme throughout. Between our Burlington and Crosswater brands, we were able to supply bathroom products that add to the vintage glamour of this hotel. The use of Confetti Pink Bespoke by Burlington ceramics adds to the retro feel and laid-back charm. Coupled with Crosswater’s Belgravia brassware, a decorative and vibrant twist is offered on a traditional bathroom design. A large number of Decimetric modular stainless steel sinks, from GEC Anderson, were specified for the Environmental Science Laboratory at The University of Liverpools new Central Teaching Laboratories (CTL) for the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The specification called for a high performance and durable solution that was easy to maintain.Decimetric sinks provide a flexible and versatile framework of sizes in 100mm x 100mm increments so as to enable versatility and easy specification. This particular project required large double sink bowls (400 x 400 x 250m deep) set in 1400 x 600mm tops. Each sink was fitted with GEC Anderson V220 Sand Traps to collect solids and to prevent blockages.The bulk of the sinktops were installed on the first floor Environmental Science Laboratory situated in the East Wing. They run the full length of the windowed wall and provide washing facilities for 170 individual work stations.The client demanded high specification of internal fittings and a high concentration of laboratory fittings which would endure heavy usage during their life time. Hard wearing and highly functional, the professional grade brushed satin stainless steel tops provide a long life with very low maintenance. Torsten Bauszus from ADP LLP Architects said, GECA were chosen for their ability to provide modular, professional grade stainless steel tops with no joints at the sink which will make them very easy to clean and maintain.

No kitchen is ever complete without the sink and tap, and on a high-end project such as The Atelier in London, it was important that the sinks, just as every area of the design, were of the highest specification. Hopkins Architects, who worked on the project on behalf of house builder Regal-London, chose the Abode R15 stainless steel sink to achieve the brief. With the manufacturer’s Althia designer brassware being the perfect match, this sink and tap pairing were supplied for use across all of the 43 boutique apartments in West Kensington.

Abode delivered a combined sink and tap offering to high-end house builder Berkeley Group, for its Edenbrook Village development in Hampshire. The challenge for Abode was to supply a complimentary sink and tap offering to work alongside the specified German contemporary kitchens from Leicht. Exceeding at the challenge, Abode took one of its stand-out designer taps, New Media in four finishes and coupled them with the extremely versatile R15 Matrix stainless steel one-and-a-half bowl sink, providing solutions that excelled in form and function.

Fouche Bathrooms Ltd based in Wrexham, Wales, worked in conjunction with Dural to renovate and tile an ultra modern bathroom. The client’s inspiration was a contemporary, industrial look. The bathroom is ultra modern in feel. It features a beautiful freestanding bath on a perfect white expanse of floor.

Private Clinic Blomenburg stands for holism when it comes to the therapy and design concept.A haven in the middle of a beautiful environment in the north of Germany: The 19th Century Blomenburg („Burg“ for castle), is surrounded by a huge park. Away from the everyday hustle and bustle, offering 69 furnished in premium quality, spacious single rooms and suites. The modern bathrooms are equipped with KEUCO furnishings and complement the syntonic interior design. Here the guests can dedicate their soul to regeneration in a quiet and peaceful stylish ambience.The elaborate restoration of the building was carried out taking the historic importance and special use of the Blomenburg into consideration. The new building with its generous glass facade was constructed under the castle rock and now accommodates the guest rooms. Between the old and the new building, there is an approximately 800m² big spa and pool area engrafted in the topography of the castle rock. The historic buildings surrounding the castle yard are used for social purposes, medical fitness, healthy living and mindfulness training of the body, soul and mind. The exclusive design of the indoor rooms is not to be compared with the magnificence of the outside of the buildings.Noble materials and luxurious items of furniture in the guest rooms create an ideal setting for convalescence and relaxation. This temporary home equipped with KEUCO furnishings and accessories in the bathroom offer the guests plenty of storage space for personal care products. Not only do the PLAN vanity unit and tall unit in unobtrusive truffle offer generous storage space, but the light mirror with a frame offers additional storage space. Made-to-measure brushed satin stainless steel sinks and worktops, from GEC Anderson, have been installed in the breathing apparatus rooms, kit cleaning rooms and kitchens of the new Winchester Fire Station.The station relocated from its home of 74 years at North Walls to its new state-of-art facility inEaston Lane, Winnall,Winchester. The new five-bay fire station is operationally and strategically located on the outskirts of the city on a major access route, close to the M3. The new facility can accommodate 70-plus personnel and provides a continuously crewed facility as opposed to the previous just day-crewed arrangement, thus providing faster emergency cover over a greater area.Freestanding worktops, totalling more than 10 metres, were installed in the breathing apparatus (BA) room and kit cleaning area of the fire station. Industrial sized sinks were included to provide an effective washing facility for the fire crews specialist equipment. Sarah Collins, architect for Hampshire County Councils Property Services Department said, The specialised sinks were chosen for their ability to cope with an environment of high usage. We wanted a material that was robust enough to take the everyday knocks and last for the lifetime of the building. GEC Anderson sinks certainly met this requirement and are performing extremely well.

A spacious bathroom with floor-level shower and bathtub, a bedroom flooded with light and a practical working space: the Belfqihs have achieved their own very personal dream residence through a large-scale conversion of their home. After their children had left home, Kordula and Mohammed Belfqih decided to renovate the upper storey of their home in Krefeld, restructuring it completely at the same time. It all started with the desire for a modern and comfortable bathroom. One perfectly tuned to the needs of the new two-person household: the married couple imagined light, spacious rooms on their newly designed floor. Planner Bettina Bickert from Plankreis, Krefeld (www.plankreis.com) was given the exciting task of creating a new living atmosphere. Here, modern elements, alongside oriental influences, were to contribute to the planning: for the Belfqihs unite a Westphalian way of life with Moroccan traditions.

The hotel is full of rooms flooded with light and exceptional design ideas from the interior architects of JOI-Design.The hotel has its own beach on the Baltic Sea and 124 rooms with a view of nature. It is the blend of wonderful design, cosy comfort and leisurely simplicity in particular which makes the furnishings so special. GEC Anderson stainless steel worktops were recently specified by Architects, Dannatt Johnson within the new Learning Spaces and Tea Points within the historic and acclaimed museum. Working for kitchen and bathroom specialists, Brandt Kitchens, GEC Anderson supplied and installed a total of four areas, all within the remit of main contractor, Buxton Building.  Bespoke stainless steel worktops were deployed in two Tea Point and two Learning Spaces. GEC Anderson were able to meet the special detailing requirements prescribed for the various units. 5.0mm SolidTop worktops were specified for the Tea Points that included double sinks and provision for Zip hot water taps and drip trays. In the Learning Spaces, made to measure sink tops with lipped edges and integral back upstands were located in ‘hide away’ areas, behind sliding door sections of the rooms. Managing Director of GEC Anderson comments “This was a really nice project to have been involved with and, actually, is a great showcase of some of the many options that we are able to offer. For instance, in the Learning Space on Level 2, special sized sink bowls were required to fit within the bespoke [narrow] space available, whilst at the same time having space for our lipped edge detail (3) at the front and sides of the worktop perimeter, as well as our upstand edge (10) at the back.  Meanwhile, in the Tea Points, we had the exiting new 5.0mm SolidTops (solid stainless steel, as opposed to the normal, folded, edges). The result of using this detail is always striking with its slim simplicity of form.”

Delivering where suppliers before them had been unable to, Abode is supplying the versatile R15 Matrix stainless steel sink, coupled with Pico and Althia brassware to Avant Homes developments until at least July 2021. With ongoing and planned developments on over 50 sites, all of which will feature design-led Abode kitchen solutions. An ideal solution for creating a high-end and minimal look, the design of the Matrix R15 stainless sink means it can be installed into any surface, including laminate, enabling the developer to create an undermount look without the expense of solid surface.

Hamburg architect Jan Störmer's design of The Fontenay luxury hotel is an homage to the Hanseatic city. The sculptural and organic circle-shaped architecture successfully achieves a balance between the urban character of the city and its natural surroundings. Situated directly on the Alster, it is an island of tranquillity in the middle of Hamburg. The exquisite structure makes it possible to experience the Hanseatic slogan "modern classic" first hand: an open-minded outlook together with a cosmopolitan lifestyle, but with a marked penchant for the classical.  Because of the way the bright, curvy and light-flooded architecture is designed, all 130 rooms and suits face outward, and many offer a view of the Alster. The interior design of the guest rooms by Christian Meinert of the architectural firm Aukett + Heese in Berlin employs perfectly coordinated colours that harmonise wonderfully with the surrounding waterside park landscape. Light beige tones, green onyx walls, warm white nuances, and turquoise and royal blue accents faithfully mirror the natural surroundings. In the hotel bathrooms, light natural stone is used. Here, too, the products and materials chosen with special care ensure an overall impression of refinement and complete harmony. The furnishings, which include KEUCO cosmetic mirrors, stools and accessories with brushed nickel finish, are ideal – a perfect synthesis of the classical and the modern – simply a "modern classic". The refined and matt shine of nickel, its extreme durability, and its solid value are what makes this finish so special and attractive, and the first choice in The Fontenay hotel. The danish interior designer and influencer Emil Thorup is the master behind this stunning heritage apartment in Østerbro. The space embraces a classic herringbone parquet and bright walls that makes every room light up. The balance is reached through the edgy details, that gives the classic apartment a younger feel. For the bathroom, Emil used products in brushed stainless steel from the Qtoo collection.

During the hotel’s modernisation, interior designer and architect Manfred Ronstedt successfully created a pleasant living environment, through carefully chosen interiors. Here, usability for guests was not to be forgotten. The accessories and fittings from KEUCO impress by perfectly uniting design with stylish comfort. Gleaming chrome finishes underscore the noble ambience of the refined interior architecture of the hotel.This 4-star business hotel of the Best Western Group is situated directly at Lake Neuchâtel, not far from the historical city centre of Neuchâtel. With the natural materials and gentle colours, the unique location and the wonderful natural setting of the area acted as inspiration for the design of the high quality furnishings in the rooms and suites. Wood and colours such as sand, truffle, gold and brown dominate the room design. Whilst selecting the products, Manfred Ronstedt of Ronstedt hotel concepts placed strong emphasis on the timeless elegance: "The accessories and fittings from KEUCO harmonise perfectly with the design concept of the hotel rooms – a modern ambience of well-being.“The exclusive bathroom furnishings include generously-sized showers, and some also have a bath tub. Designed to cater for the executive market, 41 exceptional 3,4 and 5 bedroomed detached family homes have been meticulously designed to complement a conservation area and provide the best in town and country living, offering modernity and low maintenance. With properties on the market at £834,950-£1,359,950, choosing the best suppliers was key.  PRODUCTSTwo styles of undermounted sinks from Abode’s classic R50 stainless steel range were selected for installation with solid surfaces for a premium look and feel in the kitchen (AW5015) and utility room (AW5014). The classic Matrix R50 under-mount stainless steel sink collection offers a range of 0.7mm thick 18/10 grade steel bowls that will suit every kitchen environment and budget. Other options include the AW5015 large single bowl, and LH or RH 1.5 bowl sinks. Furthermore, Abode’s Proboil hot water products comply with all LVD/EMC/ROHS standards according to CE and UKCA. This article will explain how this problem was addressed.What causes the doors to sag in the first place?The following are some of the reasons why a door may sag:— The door is too heavy— The door is too wide— The interval between the hinges is too short— Too few hinges are usedThe common issue with all of these problems is that the hinges cannot support the weight of the door.The Powerful J95 hinge to support even the heaviest doorsThe J95 concealed hinge is an ideal solution for hanging wide doors. This is specifically due to its high load-bearing capacity: 25 kg for 2 hinges and 40 kg for 3 hinges. It is possible to support heavy doors with fewer hinges than with conventional ones.Support 800 mm wide doors with just two hinges!A luxury hotel in Korea used the J95 concealed hinge for the bathroom sink plumbing maintenance door. Due to the 800 mm width of the door, it was necessary to use at least three conventional hinges, but with the J95, only two were needed. Since only two J95 hinges are required, it creates a cleaner and more visually appealing appearance. Additionally, since the same type of maintenance door was needed throughout the hotel, using only two hinges greatly decreased the overall installation time.

The Ambient Assisted Living Lab (AAL) within Heriot-Watt University and the University of Edinburgh’s acclaimed National Robotarium, aims to revolutionise the way assisted living care in the UK is delivered in the community using robotics and AI. With its purpose-built facilities within a recreated home setting, scientists, and engineers within the AAL will collaboratively research and create robotic and smart technology solutions in its open and remote access living lab, helping improve the physical and mental wellbeing of people with assisted living needs who want to live independently.Sharing this ethos of improving people’s wellbeing through design, Pressalit has been leading the way in assisted living technologies for the bathroom and kitchen for almost fifty years. Pressalit was therefore delighted to be asked to contribute to the inspiring work being carried out at the National Robotarium, the UK’s largest and most advanced centre for robotics and artificial intelligence, which recently opened in Edinburgh.Featured in the AAL is the Pressalit PLUS track system, which allows vertical and horizontal adjustment of different bathroom products. This bathroom is equipped with plenty of our products like the PLUS shower seat, PLUS support arms, and our MATRIX SMALL wash basin with integrated handrail, to name a few. The room can be configured to suit individual user and carer requirements, optimising space for wheelchair or carer access, whilst also future proofing the room.Meanwhile, Pressalit’s height adjustable INDIVO kitchen system brings a sense of independence to daily tasks in the kitchen and dining room. With a simple press of a button, sink and hob worktop heights can be adjusted to suit standing and seated users, and wall cupboards can be brought within easy reach. The new building of the Waldkliniken Eisenberg offers patients and guests a harmonious environment for their treatment and recovery phase in the midst of the most beautiful Thuringian landscape.The bathrooms are all completely equipped with KEUCO products and offer the patient or guest a pleasant stay rounded-off with small special features. Various residential visions for student halls, micro-apartments and alternative serviced apartments have been equipped multifunctionally, efficiently and flexibly, showing how space can be sensibly divided up.The core of the exhibition is the two “apartments of the future”, aimed at creating a pleasant living experience in an unknown city through smart features, designer products and technical refinement. With its comprehensive product portfolio, KEUCO offers individual solutions for creative and demanding bathroom planning, supplementing the project perfectly as a strong partner in bathroom furnishings. The transformation of the family home's downstairs toilet and shower room, though compact in size, leaves a lasting impression of awe-inspiring beauty.Inspired by the opulence of London's prestigious classic hotels, the client envisioned a bathroom that exudes elegance and sophistication. Carefully curated, Atlas Concorde Marvel Carrara Pure porcelain tiles were selected for their timeless, delicate swirls and natural veining.The high-gloss porcelain tiles, with their mirror-like brilliance, authentically capture the essence of white Carrara marble, infusing the space with a sense of warmth and comfort. To ensure safety in wet areas, matte tiles with an anti-slip R10 rating were chosen for the floor surfaces. This deliberate contrast between the luxurious polished marble-effect wall tiles and the tactile elegance of the matte floor surfaces creates a uniquely modern design aesthetic.A captivating feature wall, adorned with Atlas Concorde Cold White Chevron decorative tiles, serves as the centerpiece of the shower area. This mesmerizing wall is visible from the kitchen area through a small doorway, inviting the imagination to explore its depths. Crafted with monochromatic finesse, it adds remarkable depth to the entire project.
