The Corinthia Hotel London is a historic luxury hotel, formerly the Metropole Hotel and used as a government buidling during the war. Regarded as one of the most luxurious and important hotels in London Kaldewei worked closley with IHI and GA Design to establish and deliver a specification consisting of our Ellipso Duo Oval 1900x1000 baths for the executive suites and Centro Duo 1800x800 for the standard suite rooms. The scheme was delivered 2010/11.

Ashton Old Baths is a Grade II listed building which Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council has transformed into a business hub and data centre; an idea for heritage sites which could be transferred to many other ‘at risk’ buildings.The primary concern for the project was to create a sympathetic dialogue between the historic and the modern.Lang+Fulton were approached by the architect to provide an appropriate solution for a compound to surround and screen the unsightly sub-station, data centre generators, and cooling plant that were required to service the new complex. Their Corten louvre, made from weathering steel was selected to match the tonal qualities of the original red brick façade of the Victorian bath house and preserve the sensitive context of the site. The Italia-Corten panels sit between an expressed steel framework, which was hot-dip galvanized before polyester powder coating in a dark grey to reference the regeneration of the site to the area’s industrial past. The continuous structure creates 80% visual screening and the robust steel louvres provide excellent security.The compound was supplied with double-leaf and tri-fold gates to provide the required access.

With a view protected by an Act of Parliament and famously captured by JMW Turner in his painting ‘Richmond Hill’, it’s no surprise the Star and Garter mansion on Richmond Hill is one of the most exclusive addresses in the capital.The meticulous refurbishment of this Grade II listed landmark provides a stunning range of luxuriously specified residences. Majestic were invited to supply Rio and Portofino enclosures as well as Genoa and Valletta bath screens from The Frameless Portfolio.

The development at The Rudding Park Hotel, Harrogate was the biggest spa project in the UK 2016/2017 and the biggest project installed by Sauna360 UK. Sauna360 installed thermal rooms, pools and plant over three levels. Lap pool, hydro pool, roof top spa, Rasul, Pool side sauna, Panoramic sauna, Luxury steam room, three feature showers, foot spas and heated benches, ice fountain and herbal bath.

Delta Registered Installers, Bensleys provided a waterproofing solution on an iconic Brighton structure.Steeped in history and thought to be built on the original Brill Baths site, sits Clarendon Mansions. This large, detached structure is thought to have been built in 1870 by Charles Brill during the Brighton boom.The four-storey building facing Brighton’s famous sea front, was originally constructed as a hotel.Numerous refurbishments over subsequent periods of time, saw the structure move from a hotel to a public house, with the basement area being unoccupied for nearly a decade.The basement area boasts large, vaulted areas to the south and west elevation, with the south-side possibly being part of the original Bath structure.Bensleys were instructed by the main contractor, Pilbeam Construction on behalf of Evolution Architects, to help design, specify and install the waterproofing system.There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to waterproofing design. With the basement suffering from water penetration, Bensleys worked with the design team at an early stage of the project to ensure the right approach be taken, which included multiple factors such as: customer requirements, standards, robustness, cost, resources, time, skill required, safety and expectations of ground water which all translated into a design solution.

Crittall Corporate W20 windows are an important component in the refurbishment and upgrade of a prominent industrial site in historic Bath.Newark Works is recognised as a masterclass in the retrofitting of heritage buildings that has transformed a former riverside heavy engineering factory into 21st century workspace.The buildings, dating from 1857 to 1905, are Grade II listed and sit within Bath’s designated World Heritage Site. They were formerly the home of world-renowned crane makers Stothert & Pitt but had fallen into serious disrepair. Their location as part of a larger Bath Quays redevelopment spurred their re-use, underpinned by sensitive treatment, to create 40,000sq.ft of modern workspace.“We specified the Crittall W20 system to replace the existing, single-glazed, cast-iron framed windows that were at the end of their life and deemed beyond repair,” said Nick Brown, Director of Ferguson Mann Architects.He explained: “The Crittall W20 system was chosen due to the need to use a window system that could sympathetically reproduce the fenestration of the large industrial windows – many of which were 3.6m tall – but also provide a huge thermal improvement.”  It was recognised that retaining the original cast iron windows and introducing secondary glazing was neither economically viable nor appropriate aesthetically.“The slim profiles of the Crittall W20 system meant we didn’t have to compromise on the amazing amount of natural light coming into the interior whilst improving the air tightness and reducing the overall heat loss of the building through the windows,” said Brown.He added: “Crittall were also able to recreate the opening vent arrangement of the existing windows, meaning we could also improve the natural ventilation provision to the new workspaces.”Consulting engineers Buro Happold calculated that just replacing the existing single-glazed windows with new double-glazed alternatives with a U-value of 1.8W/m2K would result in a 16 percent annual energy saving. That translated to 21.4 tonnes of CO₂. Over the building’s lifespan of, say, 25 years, that equated to a 535-tonne reduction in CO₂ emissions.In view of the heritage credentials of the buildings, planners and conservation officers at Bath & North East Somerset Council were consulted on the desire to replace the original fenestration with like-for-like steel windows. The local authority was keen that the buildings should be brought back into use after several previous failed attempts. They wanted the site’s historic significance to be respected while avoiding the desire to turn Newark Works into a ‘museum piece’. The installation of Crittall W20 was approved and two of the original cast-iron windows have been retained and refurbished as a reminder of the original building but not in a way so as to compromise the improved thermal performance of the whole.Summing up, Nick Brown comments: “Everyone is really pleased with the final result.”

A barn conversion in the picturesque village of Witham Friary, near Bath, was completed using 10,000 Acme Natural Orange Double Camber clay plain tiles and plain angle clay ridges. The Natural Orange colour was selected to contrast with the local stonework and the traditional cedar shingles used on the vertical elevations and the central atrium between the two buildings. The unique double camber format of the clay plain tiles also adds a subtle texture and character to the roof with accentuated light and shade.

Located in South Yorkshire on the edge of the Peak district the spa enjoys beautiful rural surroundings. The spa is located in a converted farm building with views down the valley to the south and fields to the north. The spa health suite comprises an Aroma steam room, Panoramic sauna, Himalayan sauna, Herbal bath, Rasul, Feature shower and footbaths. A superb choice of thermal experiences within a relatively small space yet through clever use of glass always feeling spacious and relaxing.

Roof slates by Welsh Slate feature on the renovated Cleveland Pools.The UK’s oldest public open-air swimming baths, once used as a trout farm, are enjoying a new lease of life, thanks in part to Welsh Slate.Some 75m2 of Welsh Slate’s new Penrhyn Heather Blue roofing slates feature alongside salvaged originals on the main building and changing rooms of the lido at Cleveland Pools, a Grade II* listed building that had been on the Buildings at Risk register.

Helo was commissioned to create a poolside sauna in keeping with this traditional style pool hall in a country estate in the south west. Space was limited and effort was made to reduce, as far as possible, the impact of the cabin on the surrounding décor. The client wished to enjoy a view of the existing pool area whilst bathing in the sauna. This was achieved with an angled glass door and full height glazed panel. Helo’s sophisticated Fusion heater, with steam generator, was used to allow a multi climate sauna to suit varying tastes.

Helo was invited to design and build a bespoke steam room as part of a leisure complex redeveloped within a country estate. Using traditional Moroccan Tadelakt finish, an authentic hammam style steam bath was created. A challenge posed by this project was to achieve remote switching of the steam from the main residence over a distance of 350 metres, enabling the client to prepare the steam room in advance of use. Special design features were included. For example, an ornate pull handle and concealed linear drain at the room’s entrance.

South Lodge is a 19th Century country house set in 93 acres of Sussex countryside a few miles south of Horsham. It is part of the Exclusive Hotel Group including Pennyhill Park. Sauna360 installed a luxury health suite as part of their stunning new 44,000 sq ft spa development. Sauna360 delivered on time and in budget the design concepts of Sparc Studios. Thermal facilities include: Panoramic Sauna, Salt Steam Room, Herbal Bath, Rasul, heated bench and foot rests, shower and drench.

Looking down for architectural features in any Georgian town and as well as coal hole covers, manholes and the like you'll see all manner of air bricks and grilles, mostly for sub floor ventilation in property walls. Here is an illustration of a cast iron vent underneath a front door in Regency Bath. Like many it's in a pretty poor state. This one's patched up with steel plate and it's suffocating, what is a key part of the ground floor causing damp. Prevent damp in period property basements and below suspended floors...

Invited to design a steam room for a traditional country farmhouse, with clean, modern convenience, Helo joined with specialist local building contractor, Leon Developments, to create a luxurious, practical Turkish bath for all the family to enjoy. Using subtle contours throughout to create a relaxing environment and ensure natural dispersal of condensation, the room was given a very open and airy feeling with the use of an extra wide safety glass door. This provides a view of the beautifully designed country bathroom from the comfort of full width mosaic tiled benches.

The scope of work at 217 Bath Road combined a full-scale structural refurbishment and fit-out of the internal space along with extensive landscaping works around the building.Landlords EPIC UK sought to revitalise the site into four floors of highly desirable Grade A office space — all to be done with a strong emphasis on sustainability.With a view to make the most of the available floorspace, a partially-filled atrium design was submitted by architects Stiff + Trevellion.Radii AG’s experience in providing structural glazed atrium solutions saw them work closely with the architects and main contractors Overbury and contribute their considerable expertise to bring the design to life.The initial atrium design at Bath Road was to be comprised of system partitions that were installed ‘slab to slab’, with spandrel panels then covering the glazing.After careful consideration, Radii AG proposed an alternative solution that would see all glazed elements and spandrel panels installed in one continuous plane.This evolution of the design would ‘value engineer’ the build and improve overall aesthetics by ensuring clean lines throughout.Furthermore, Radii AG were able to work closely with our western contracting office, who were tasked with supplying the abutted glass partitioning systems.The installation of free issue spandrel panels ensured a seamless aesthetic transition to the adjoining glazed partitioning from the industrial-style partition system.

The beautiful Longleat house is situated on a 1,000 acre area of land near the towns of Warminster, in Wiltshire, and Frome, in Somerset. The house today is widely regarded as one of the best examples of high Elizabethan architecture in Britain and one of the most beautiful stately homes open to the public. Substantially completed by 1580 and now occupied by the 7th Marquess of Bath this incredible house has been called home by 15 generations of the Thynne family. Lorient supplied Batwing® acoustic + smoke seals and BW502 intumescent fire, smoke and draft gaskets to this stately home.

This is a very exciting time for residents of South Shields as the first of its kind is being constructed - a million pound penthouse apartment spanning the entire top floor of the apartment block.Genesis products have been used throughout this project to create stunning finishes.Every bathroom in the executive apartment block features ESA100.94 to create stylish niches and tile edges. The brushed effect surface beautifully compliments the tiling around many of the baths.MHS100.35 movement joints and TDP100.91 have been used to create subtle transitions between doorways where discretion is key and a traditional transition strip is not requested.

Generous outdoor areas and a clear, reduced use of materials are characteristic of the gated community in Narlidere constructed by Emre Arolat. Folding sliding shutters play their part in the fascinating interplay between inside and outside. The new development near Izmir is characterized by the urban structure of a gated apartment complex with 168 units with floor areas ranging from 180 to 480 square meters. The wooden folding sliding shutters feature HAWA Frontfold 20 hardware which bathes the rooms in light when open. When closed, they offer an effective screen delicately integrated to protect from the sun and provide privacy.

Helo was chosen by David Lloyd Leisure and Pellikaan Construction to design and build the heat treatment rooms for this flag-ship spa facility in Surrey. It features an amazing five different sauna cabins. Each one offering the user a unique bathing experience; from the Vitality Sauna which offers clients an exciting sauna ceremony to a more traditional approach in the stylish log cabin set in the grounds of the club. There are two contemporary steam rooms - crystal and oriental, a salt grotto, a tepadarium with luxurious heated ceramic loungers and two adventure showers along with a spectacular ice chandelier.

Naylor Concrete supplied Hi-Spec, Fire Spec and Stainless Steel L-Strip Lintels to the Sun Lane Leisure project in Wakefield. This new regeneration project by Crest Nicholson, boasts high quality residences from studio apartments to four bedroom homes. The building provided much needed new housing for the area. Alison Brook architects won the housing section of the Civic Voice Design Awards. The judges said: ‘This is a stunning housing development which provides an interesting contemporary take on a proud local identity’. The architect has created a connection with the outdoors in, utilising large fixed rooflights from Glazing Vision to bring daylight into the house and frame the surroundings.‘The most beautiful spot in the Netherlands’; that is the description of this country house in the marina ‘t Raboes according to the owners. Located on the Eemmeer, a place in the middle of nature, and away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The architect has created a connection with the outdoors in, utilising large fixed skylights from Glazing Vision to bring daylight into the house and frame the surroundings.Bringing in daylight with large minimalist skylights was a key requirement for the architect. The horizontal application of large glass surfaces demands a lot from the design and after many discussions, the architect was confident that Glazing Vision was the rooflight manufacturer that could implement what they had in mind.No framework in sight. Insulated glass with excellent insulation values. Glass that blends seamlessly into the architect’s design. A way to bring the outdoor feeling inside.Three multipart skylights have made this architectural vision become a reality.The back-to-back angles fit in very well with the rest of the modern contemporary interiors. To make it possible to darken the rooms, Glazing Vision has applied custom-made sun protection from Topshade.At the spot where the river Eem flows into the Eemmeer, architect De Kort van Schaik designed the country residence ‘t Raboes. The clients wanted to create a place where they could fully experience nature, but also withdraw from the hustle and bustle of the city.The house consists of three parts, connected by three covered terraces. Concrete walls and floors which blend seamlessly into the environment and large windows that frame the polder landscape.All energy on ‘t Raboes is generated locally. The solar cells on the roof of the marina building supply electricity. A heat pump that uses the surface water of the Eemmeer provides heating for the house and swimming pool.In the living areas, wood stoves have been used, all which use wood from their own grounds, providing readily available extra heating capacity.A beautiful contrast is created by the yellow epoxy bathroom furniture, designed by Sabine Marcelis. A piece of furniture consisting of a bath, wash bath and shower stands as a free-standing sculpture in the concrete bathroom. The skylight forms a completely frameless glass roof, which gives you the feeling of being outside even more.Sabine Marcelis states that she has designed her dream bathroom. The subtle rotation of the furniture gives you a fantastic view of the landscape from the bath.Taken aback by this stunning property, the architectural press has been impressed with all aspects of the design. De Volkskrant gives the Huis op ‘t Raboes five stars. “The Rotterdam architectural firm De Kort Van Schaik designed a house in which you live with the elements and at the same time are protected against them, thanks to a thick concrete coat.”

Devonshire Row, 150 Bishopsgate is a residential and commercial redevelopment in Central London. The existing façade was retained amongst the area to be redeveloped. The project consisted of 97,718 square metres of floor space and includes a site area of 5,000 square metres, with 284 residential units, car parking, leisure and entertainment facilities as well as business ventures. KEIM’s remit was to coat the existing Bath stone façade to match and blend seamlessly with the new Portland Stone façade.To deal with the potential for the new stone to age differently, KEIM Fixativ was applied to preserve and prevent the surface from getting soiled.KEIM Soldalit in colour 9295 was applied to all the surfaces, followed by a two-coat application of KEIM Restauro Lasur in colours ST019 and ST002 to mimic the new Portland Stone façade.

This luxury home was designed to have fully concealed blinds in every window. The owners were enthusiastic to design a home that was the best to the last detail. Blinds and curtains are controlled using Lutron® and were installed using the Blindspace® concealment products. Bespoke electric curtains were included to provide softness and the fully concealed blinds were used to control the light and privacy. Through careful planning from the outset of the project, the inclusion of concealed blinds has achieved the best end result. Dark-coloured fabrics have been used where maximum visibility was desired but softer white-toned used in bath and dressing rooms. Bedrooms and media room have been supplied using dark-coloured blackout material to make a statement when used.

More than 5,000 m² in porcelain stoneware for Germany’s largest leisure pool – Villeroy & Boch tiles in the Stegermatt Swimming Pool in OffenburgSport, wellness and leisure spanning more than 10,000 m² – the largest leisure pool in Germany, Stegermatt Swimming Pool in Offenburg, opened in late July 2017. Along with an outdoor area with 50-metre swimming pool, wave slide and adventure pool, indoor visitors can look forward to a fitness courses pool, a teaching pool, a diving pool with two diving platforms and a 25-metre competition pool. The sauna landscape comprises a variety of saunas, a steam bath and a cold-water area with adventure showers and a plunge pool. The developers for the project were the City and Technical Operations of Offenburg. 4a Architekten of Stuttgart were the architects in charge of planning for the project. The tiling work, with a volume of EUR 2.5 million, was performed by the Freiburg subsidiary of Fliesen Röhlich GmbH; with a staff of around 300 professional layers of tile and natural stone, the company is considered the largest tile specialist in Germany. For an entire year, this major project in Offenburg had 15 employees working constantly, increasing to 25 in peak periods. As a result, in spite of at times difficult weather conditions, the work was completed on time.  With the exception of the swimming pools themselves, the entire bathing level, including the changing rooms in the interior of the facility, was designed in the X-PLANE range of vilbostone porcelain stoneware by Villeroy & Boch Tiles. The range features a trendy concrete look with fine colour gradations. Spanning an area of 5,000 m², cream-coloured tiles in the two modular formats of 30 x 60 cm and 15 x 60 cm were laid in a brickwork-effect pattern, creating a space with a harmonious and at the same time vibrant look. Another approx. 600 m² of matching mosaic tiles were also used. With the special 5 x 5 cm format and a slip-resistance class of R10 they are suitable for use in shower areas.

St Peter’s is a Grade II* listed church in Notting Hill, West London. It was built to designs by Thomas Allom and is reputed to be the last Classical Revival church built in London in the 19th century. Building began in 1855 and the church was consecrated in 1857. Its large scale portico and west tower are the notable features. A complete restoration and refurbishment has been carried out, including the re-instatement of its redundant gallery, new meeting rooms and exterior colour-washed facades.The architect wanted to achieve a look that replicates limewash, with some very subtle variation almost replicating a layering colour of bath stone. The final specification was a layered solution to achieve the desired finish. This included a coat of KEIM Soldalit Fixativ to the newly applied lime skim, and KEIM Soldalit Grob applied to all areas. The surface was then painted using KEIM Soldalit, before lastly KEIM Restauro Lasur being applied as the top two coats.

Following the current trend for basement installations our client had an interesting twist; a large underground area was to be created under the rear garden. Designed to house the client’s beautiful motor cars, there was still plenty of room to include an opulent, huge swimming pool and generously sized sauna and steam room with shower between. Both rooms were designed with a U shaped, emphasising the great social occasion of heat bathing with clear glass fascias providing a wide view of the pool and client’s stunning décor including a feature faux-living wall.Sauna: Warm Alder panelling was chosen for the sauna with a hidden heater to have clean lines and ensure absolute safety for young ones.Steam Room: The matching steam room was lined in beautiful pearl green mosaics to echo the pool finish.Yet another angle on how to introduce a wellness feature at home, all beautifully presented and a project in which Sauna360 were proud to play our part!

Care Spaces played a crucial role in enhancing the living conditions of a private client, referred to as Mr B, who had experienced a spinal injury leading to a loss of physical independence. Collaborating with an architect to design a bespoke extension, we focused on the bedroom and bathroom to cater to his specific needs. The centrepiece of the design was an XY ceiling track hoist with a magnetic transition gate system, facilitating safe transfers between the bedroom and bathroom. Care Spaces also recommended bathroom equipment tailored to Mr B's needs, including a washer/dryer toilet, a static-height hand basin, and an Avero care bath with an air spa system for therapeutic benefits. With Mr B's approval, we oversaw the installation of the hoist system and bathroom equipment, provided necessary training, and ensure routine servicing for optimal functionality. Mr B is now delighted with his improved living space, and Care Spaces remains committed to maintaining the excellence of his care equipment.

HLM, the architectural practice had a very high-end, designer lead project at Park Lane London, which required bespoke components mixed together with standard products forming a warrantied bathroom solution for the client. 15 types of different bespoke XPS shower trays were created for this project and used across the 460 rooms spread over 3 phases.240 bespoke XPS niches were installed and in 210 cases substructure sets were used to reach the required 100mm installation height thus allow for a straightforward replacement of old baths with showers without having to modify the existing pipework.In all bathrooms, wedi XPS building boards were used in 12.5mm thickness for walls and 10mm thickness for floors.RESULT: Thanks to the sub-contractor Milk Leisure, an Approved Partner of a leading manufacturer of XPS shower/bathroom systems, the client received a 100% waterproof bathroom with a 15 year manufacturer’s warranty on the whole installation. 

Funding was secured to renovate a Grade II listed lido in Pontypridd. The lido, which had remained derelict since 1991, was given a new lease of life after the local authority clinched the funding required to restore it back to its former glory. As part of the scheme, the existing derelict buildings would be renovated and the Lido bathing area remodeled into three heated pools. The restoration included external covered showers, heated changing facilities and a learning and historical interpretation centre. The client needed a coloured product that was highly durable, easy to place and maintain, available in a range of colours and, most important of all, capable of retaining its colour and beauty. TOPTINT coloured was recommended as the ideal solution. TOPTINT contains an integral colour pigment which is UV stable meaning that the colour will not degrade from natural sunlight. Also, because a liquid pigment is used the colour is evenly mixed throughout the concrete. As this pigment is integral to the mix it is a long lasting and frost-resistant solution, requiring little on-going maintenance and therefore making it a more sustainable long term solution.

The recent refurbishment of 4 Chiswell Street by Ben Adams Architects includes Armourcoat’s Istria polished plaster wall finish. Situated close to the historic Bunhill cricket ground in Islington, this once tired office building has been re-imagined as a modern and open workspace.Entering through an impressive new façade and front entrance, the architect’s design includes a double height reception space bathed in natural light. A sculpturally fluted wall finished in Istria polished plaster and custom terrazzo floor continue a circular motif repeated throughout the design. With exposed services and stylish use of concrete colours, the structure has been transformed into a contemporary and relevant commercial building with a distinctive urban feel.Named after the characteristic building stone of Venice, the Istria polished plaster finish is made from a combination of slaked lime, recycled marble powder and special additives. The Istria finish is full of ingrained surface movement and creates a matt or honed stone appearance. Tonal variation and surface movement within the finish complements other natural materials including wood, stone and fabric.
