Application

For application to unsealed interior concrete floor slabs such as basement rooms, retail space, private homes and offices and other construction which are exposed to moisture from the underside due to faulty or missing damp proof membrane (DPM).

For application in fast-track construction where there is vapour barrier (DPM) installed under the floor slab, but application of the floor build-up is required before the concrete has completely dried out and the RH readings for the floor are above those advised for the floor finish.

During drying of concrete high alkalinity can become concentrated towards the top surface of the concrete, causing damage to some resin floors and adhesives. The VAPlite System is resistant to alkalinity (pH 13–14) and serves as a barrier protecting the floor build-up from the effects of high alkalinity.

In situations where a vapour open flooring is to be used, but the DPM is missing, damaged or status unknown, the VAPLite system, will create an effective vapour barrier, preventing elevated humidity levels within the room (a particular issue for basement rooms).

VAPLite is intended for basements, lightly trafficked areas (foot traffic only) and smaller areas where shotblasting is not practical. All components of the system must be used as directed including the Koster SL Premium screed. For larger areas, areas subject to vehicular traffic, and areas requiring direct application of the finished floor (without levelling screed) the Koster VAP 2000 I System (covered by a separate NBS) is recommended by the manufacturer and shot blasting (or Koster approved equivalent) will be required.

Description

The Koster VAPlite system has been developed as a complete floor protection system for use in both basement areas subjected to hydrostatic pressure, and ground level or suspended floor slabs subject to short term or long term elevated relative humidity (RH) values. The Koster VAPlite system can provide a BBA approved negative side waterproofing, a quantifiable vapour barrier and a high strength self-levelling screed, all within a 10 mm build-up.

Controlling the water vapour within the floor slab will:

  • Prevent osmotic blistering or damage due to vapour drive for impermeable floor finishes such as resin or vinyl.
  • Prevent re-emulsification of adhesives due to high moisture levels within the build-up.
  • Protect moisture sensitive flooring such as wooden floors.
  • Allow application of floor finishes in fast-track projects, where the RH value of the slab is too high for the intended flooring.

The VAPlite System includes the following steps:

Base coat:

For floor slabs subject to hydrostatic pressure: Polysil TG500 primer (impregnation) followed by 2 coats of Koster NB1 Grey, BBA approved negative side, crystallising, sealing slurry. For ground level or suspended floor slabs: Koster KB Pox IN, ultra-low viscosity epoxy impregnation to fill open pores within the concrete.

Vapour control:

All slabs: After 7 days, apply a single coat of Koster VAP I 2000.

Screed primer:

All slabs: After 24 hours apply one coat of VAP 06 Primer (for non-absorbent surfaces).

Screed:

All slabs: Koster SL Premium, high strength, self-levelling screed is applied between 8 mm and 15 mm to provide a level, hard wearing surface to receive any flooring finish and protect the waterproofing and vapour control layers below.

System build-up:

Basement:

  1. Köster Polysil TG500 (impregnation).
  2. Köster NB1 Grey (approximately 2 mm).
  3. Köster VAP I 2000 (adds approximately 0.2 mm).
  4. Köster VAP I 06 (approximately 100 microns).
  5. Köster SL Premium (8–15 mm as required).
  6. Floor covering/ coating (as required).

Above-ground:

  1. Köster KB Pox IN (impregnation).
  2. Köster VAP I 2000 (adds approximately 0.5 mm).
  3. Köster VAP I 06 (approximately 100 microns).
  4. Köster SL Premium (8–15 mm as required).
  5. Floor covering/ coating (as required).

Features and benefits:

  • Thin layer build-up, 8–15 mm, making the system suitable for new and existing areas.
  • Suitable for concrete slabs with no underside DPM (damp proof membrane) or WPM (waterproof membrane).
  • Permanently withstands an elevated moisture level in the concrete of up to 100% relative humidity (RH).
  • Resistant to a permanently aggressive environment with pH values up to 14.
  • Suitable for all flooring types, even moisture sensitive finishes, in basement areas.

Primary layer

Koster Polysil TG500.

Guidance for specification option:

Primer for below ground applications prior to application of sealing slurry.

  • A thin fluid based on a polymer and silicate combination which can be used as a deep penetrating primer or as a liquid hardener.
  • Strengthens and protects mineral substrates and reduces their absorbency.
  • Decreases salt efflorescence and leaching out of free lime from new concrete.
  • Increases chemical and mechanical resistance of mineral building materials.
  • VOC free.

Water tightness – Negative side

Koster NB1 Grey.

Guidance for specification option:

All slabs that could be subjected to hydrostatic pressure from ground water.

  • Mineral coating containing crystallizing and capillary-plugging agents.
  • Excellent resistance to water pressure, abrasion, and chemicals.
  • Highly effective waterproofing material for internal and external applications.
  • VOC free.

Vapour barrier

Koster VAP I 2000.

Guidance for specification option:

  • Curing time of approximately 12 hours.
  • Due to its very high interlacing density, KÖSTER VAP I 2000 is able to reduce the passage of water vapor to such an extent that synthetic resin coatings, adhesives and plastic coverings are not pushed off the substrate. The material displays a good resistance to water, sewage, mineral oils, salt solutions, and diluted acids.
