Description

The elZinc® facade panel is a zinc architectural cladding solution composed of self-supporting interlocking zinc panels with shadow (reveal) joints. They are installed either horizontally or vertically, interlocking with one another to form a rear-ventilated rainscreen.


The zinc rear-ventilated rainscreen facade is composed of horizontally or vertically installed self-supporting panels made of 1 mm thick elZinc® titanium zinc rolled according to EN 988 and ASTM B69-13. Ventilating space behind cladding to be a minimum of 38 mm, or according to project design criteria, whichever is the greater. 


Features and benefits:

  • Single skin self-supporting panels with tongue and groove joint.
  • Narrow aspect ratio – length up to a nominal 4 m, width up to 300 mm.
  • Panels are normally installed in either a horizontal or vertical direction.
  • Installed top to bottom.
  • Reveal joint width between panels can vary from 5 mm to 25 mm.
  • System weight 10 kg/m² (zinc only).

System performance

Zinc facade panels shall provide a rainscreen wall cladding, able to freely expand and contract in response to temperature changes, and fitted to resist all loading including wind loads. The appearance of the cladding shall be one composed of flat panels, of straight joints and neat folds, correctly set out according to the architect’s drawings and design intent.

Manufacturer guidance

Joints shall set out according to architect’s drawings, or in their absence, according to the design intent of the project. The details of the zinc work should be carried out according recognized good practice and manufacturer’s recommendations. Respect minimum recommended interior radii while bending. Holes should be notched where required to prevent tears forming in the zinc. Marking out: Use a pencil, pen, crayon or chalk.


After completion, no marking should be visible. Wherever possible use a mechanical folder to bend material to give straight and uniform folds. Free edges: If visible fold over to form a 15 mm hem. Ensure the temperature of the metal does not fall below 7, or 10°C, depending on the operation, when folding, profiling or forming the metal. Follow elZinc recommendations regarding warming up zinc metal prior to forming.

Layout

Horizontal design with uniform horizontal and vertical shadow joint widths.

Guidance for specification option:

This is the simplest of designs and the most common. It gives a homogeneous feel to the facade. The shadow joint in both directions is usually between 10 and 15 mm. See image in Associated Content.

Horizontal design using sleeved transversal joints.

Guidance for specification option:

This reduces the impact of the transversal joints lending, in this design, more horizontality to the facade. See image in Associated Content.

Horizontal design using different joint widths.

Guidance for specification option:

This ‘frames’ blocks of panels and can create the illusion (at a distance) of large panel sizes. The heavier joints are normally made to coincide with openings.  See image in Associated Content.

End to end joint:

  • Baffled (joint liner): 10-15 mm is normal, and must be above minimums established below.
  • Closed joint (Sleeved joint): Must be above minimums established below.

Width can vary from the minimums given below to 25 mm.


Minimum transverse joint widths:

  • 1 m panel – 4 mm.
  • 2 m panel – 5 mm.
  • 3 m panel – 7 mm.
  • 4 m panel – 8 mm.
