Description

System for extensive or intensive roof planting, used in combination with a Bailey Anti-Root Waterproofing System (specified separately).

  • Provides acoustic and thermal insulation. Reduces heating or cooling costs.

Access:

  • Intensive planting may require defined access routes for typical building and planting maintenance, together with defined areas with suitable paving, planting or enclosure where recreational access is intended together with suitable fall protection systems.

Systems:

- Biodiverse (brown) roof:

Emulation of natural ground level environment may require maintenance in different conditions prevailing at roof level. Design largely governed by surrounding natural environment/habitat that the roof is intended to replace.

- Extensive green roof:

Simple to design, install and maintain. Not intended for recreational use, but planted for aesthetic and environmental reasons. Utilise plants such as sedum, mosses, succulents, herbs, grasses and wild flowers, that can survive in the exposed conditions found at roof level. Requires 2/3 maintenance inspections per year and watering in drought conditions. Pre-grown and established modular system available for a single operation installation and easy removal to gain access to the waterproofing.

- Intensive green roof:

Designed to create a garden/recreational space at roof level, by the planting of shrubs, trees, coppices and grassed areas, with the inclusion of areas of hard landscaping, decking and paving etc. This type of planting requires greater depth of growing medium./substrate, resulting in a greater weight for the structure to support. Requires regular maintenance and irrigation, should be treated as a suburban garden in terms of maintenance.

Substrate protection:

- Eco-Roof protection fleece:

Nonwoven polypropylene geotextile. Helps protect roof waterproofing from impact and provides moisture retention.

Filter:

- Eco-Roof filter fleece:

  • Polypropylene fleece.
  • Acts as filter, discouraging passage of growing medium particles into drainage system.

System:

Planting type and species should be related to roof conditions, depth and type of growing medium, together with resources for maintenance.

Water drainage and storage:

- Eco-Roof Reservoir Board:

  • Eggcrate type, moulded high density polyethylene (HDPE) element laid with dimples facing down, providing water retention to upside with open channels on downside for efficient drainage of surplus.
  • Available with pre-bonded filter and protection fleeces (excluding 60mm).
  • 20mm - greater water storage, but less drainage capacity than 25mm, not suitable for 0° falls or falls in excess of 10°..
  • 25mm - less water storage capacity but more efficient drainage than 20mm. Suitable for roofs with 0 - 30° falls and areas of hard landscaping.
  • 40mm - as 20mm but with greater water storage capacity. Generally only required for intensive systems.
  • 60mm - greatest water storage capacity. Requires pockets/dimples to be filled with mineral drain aggregate. Generally only required for intensive systems.

- Eco-Roof Drainage Board:

  • Egg crate type, moulded high density polyethylene (HDPE) element laid with dimples facing up, providing drainage capacity only.
  • Pre-bonded filter fleece
  • 6, 12 and 25mm depths - greater the depth, the greater the drainage capacity.

Growing medium:

- Eco-Roof extensive growing medium:

  • Lightweight compost mix for extensive type planting.
  • Depth will be related to type of roof, situation, planting type and species.

- Eco-Roof intensive growing medium:

  • Topsoil/compost mix for intensive type planting.
  • Depth will be related to type of roof, situation, planting type and species.

Planting:

- Eco-Roof sedum blanket:

  • Precultivated sedum plants on cocomat or geogrid substrate. 6–8 species.
  • Plants are wind, frost and drought resistant, with colour variation between species. Low maintenance.
  • Cocomat substrate is biodegradable for flat or shallow pitched roofs.
  • Geogrid susbstrate, is rot-proof and provides support for roofs with falls in excess of 10°.

Aggregate:

- Eco-Roof marine washed aggregate:

20 - 40mm rounded cobble. Used to define plant free zones at junction of roof with upstand walls, points of service penetration and roof edges.

- Eco-Roof scotch cobbles:

20 - 30mm decorative scottish cobble, used to define plant free zones at junction of roof with upstand walls, points of service penetration and roof edges.

- Eco-Roof mineral drain aggregate:

Drainage aggregate used in conjunction with 60mm reservoir board, or beneath areas of hard landscaping, to fill pockets/dimples and provide stable base.

Trims:

- Eco-Roof drainage trim:

Aluminium trim with drainage slots for use at draining edges to retain green roof system elements and allow free drainage.

- Eco-Roof retention trim:

Aluminium trim with spikes for use on roofs with falls in excess of 10° to retain green roof elements and prevent landscape slippage.

Other requirements:

  • Eco-Roof outlet inspection chambers - aluminium chamber with locking lid for access to rainwater outlets for maintenance. Height adjustable to suit varying green roof depths.
  • Eco-Roof anti-erosion web - biodegradable or rot-proof grid for stabilisation of the growing medium on roofs with falls in excess of 25° or with growing medium depths in excess of 100mm.
  • Depending on the landscape design of the roof, some roofs may require areas of hard landscaping or rocks, timber and other items, particularly for brown roofs.
