Description

A range of columns and pilasters inspired by the architecture of Ancient Rome and Greece.

A column will usually have an entablature of some kind to support, for example as part of a portico, temple, pavilion or classical facade.

Classical pilasters (also referred to as pillars) are rectangular in plan and are handcrafted.

The columns are designed to be non-structural elements and so are provided with hollow cores. These, if filled with reinforced concrete or used to sleeve a structural steel member, can then be used in structural situations. They are supplied in component form and should be erected on suitable foundations designed by a structural engineer to suit loadings and ground conditions.

The shaft sections should be lined with expanded polystyrene (EPS) or similar to act as an isolating medium when column cores are infilled.

Material:

- Haddonstone (Semi-dry cast limestone):

High quality semi-dry cast stone, consisting of over 50% limestone aggregate. With a surface texture similar to Portland Stone, Haddonstone is regularly used alongside or as an alternative to natural stone.

- TecStone (wet cast limestone):

High quality wet cast stone, comprising over 60% natural limestone aggregate. Denser than the Haddonstone material, TecStone is acid etched as standard to provide an attractive appearance similar to a finished natural stone. Designed to meet demanding performance criteria and can incorporate structural reinforcement and cast-in fixings. TecStone is the preferred material for architectural projects where structural performance is required.

Standard product features

Compressive cube strength after 28 days (minimum):

  • Haddonstone: >35 MPa.
  • TecStone: >45 MPa.

Both materials exceed the requirements of the United Kingdom Cast Stone Association (UKCSA) specification and comply with the requirements of BS 1217, BS 5642-2+ A1 and BS EN 13198.

Haddonstone:

  • Material density: 2150 kg/m³.
  • Compressive strength: Minimum compressive cube strength at 28 days is >35 N/mm² (MPa).
  • Aggregate size: 0–3 mm continuously graded.
  • Finish: Ex-Mould (no finishing required).
  • Freeze/ thaw resistance: Complies with UKCSA Standards so products deemed freeze/ thaw resistant.
  • Handling reinforcement: Where appropriate units may contain one or more stainless steel, synthetic fibre or extruded basalt reinforcement bar (30 mm minimum cover).

TecStone:

  • Material density: 2350 kg/m³.
  • Compressive strength: Minimum compressive cube strength at 28 days is >45 N/mm² (MPa).
  • Aggregate size: 0–10 mm continuously graded.
  • Finish: Light acid etched.
  • Freeze/ thaw resistance: Complies with UKCSA Standards so products deemed freeze/ thaw resistant.
  • Handling reinforcement: Where appropriate units may contain one or more stainless steel, synthetic fibre or extruded basalt reinforcement bar (30 mm minimum cover).
