Brimstone Ash Decking

Length:

Random lengths of 1.5-3.0 m, allowing a small percentage down to 1.5 m. Lengths of over 3.0 m may be included but are not guaranteed.

Appearance:

Consistent dark chocolate brown colouring with a clearly defined grain pattern. The colour can be further enhanced by the application of a clear oil such as Osmo UV-resistant oil. Relatively knot free. It weathers to a silver grey colour more quickly than non-modified timber. Small surface cracks may appear during dry periods.

Technical properties:

• Moisture content: 4-6%.

• Natural durability (to BS EN 350-2): Durable, Class 1.

• Insect attack: Thermally modified wood is resistant to insect attack when used above ground contact.

• Service life (to BS 8417): Frequently wet: 30 years (heavily reliant on good design and installation, realistic service life of 15–20 years).

• Treatability class: Resistant.

• Movement class: Small.

• Resistance to impact: Medium to high.

• Resistance to fixing: High, modified wood is brittle and should be treated with care.

• When to fix: No restrictions.

• Grading: BS 1186-3: Class 1; BS EN 942: J20; CE: Grade A.

• Working properties: Thermally modified woods are more brittle than untreated wood. Care should be taken when cutting and nailing to prevent chipping and break-out; pre-drilling is advised.

• Extractives: The modification process involves no chemicals, and any natural chemicals in the wood are removed during the process. Thermally modified wood can be treated as inert.

• Emission of formaldehyde (to BS EN 14915): E1 (not significant).

• Reaction to fire (to BS EN 14915): Euroclass F (untested), D-s2, d0.

• Fire treatment: Untested.

Fixing:

Face fixed with stainless steel screws, or with a secret fixing system such as Sihga DielenFix. Secret fixing systems that require edge grooves are not recommended. Continuous edge grooves will result in a weak edge that may snap off.

Anti-slip:

Available with two or three Gripdeck anti-slip inserts.
