Bauder BioSOLAR integrated solar PV mounting system for Biodiverse Green Roof, Flat Roof Only
Bauder BioSOLAR integrated solar PV mounting system for Biodiverse Green Roof, Flat Roof Only.
Bauder BioSOLAR is an integrated mounting solution for photovoltaic renewable energy within a green roof where the substrate and vegetation provide the ballasted installation mechanism, which removes the need for penetrating the waterproofing to secure the mounting units to the roof.
A key element of the BioSOLAR system is that the front edge of the PV panel is set at around 300mm above the level of the substrate, which allows liberal growing space for the biodiverse vegetation without blocking light to the polycrystalline solar cells that would otherwise reduce the efficiency of the panels. This height setting also enables light and moisture to reach beneath the panel to support the plants below.

Standard product features | Substrate / Growing medium - Bauder Biodiverse Substrate (FLL Compliant): Lightweight, free draining substrates designed as a growing medium for a range of different plant species. This FLL/GRO compliant substrate provides a free draining, growing medium for biodiverse green roof systems. Additionally, it provides aeration qualities with some inherent water retention.
Applied directly into the profile cups of the Bauder BioSOLAR Anchor Boards. Installed above the Filter Fleece in Bauder DSE40 Drainage and Protection Layer areas. Substrates are raked out to give an even coverage of the required depth after settlement. Handle in the driest condition possible. Do not handle or install when wet or frozen. Start by applying two equal layers, building up to the required maximum depth. Gently firm each layer before spreading the next. Allowance should be made for any settlement that may occur. It is recommended that ‘measuring stick’ markers of the required depth be used around the roof area to ensure that a minimum acceptable thickness of growing medium is achieved. Depending on size and access of the project the ‘substrate’ can be supplied by various methods i.e. tipper, silo lorry (pumping directly onto the roof area), Big bags, or sacks. Prior to costing this element of the installation, the ‘Bauder Approved Contractor’ must contact Bauder Ltd so that they may advise on the best solution on any specific contract. Important note regarding alternative substrates: Alternative substrates are not recommended for Bauder supplied planting. Filter layer: - Bauder Filter Fleece (used over Bauder DSE40 Drainage and Protection Layer only):NOT TO BE USED OVER THE BAUDER BIOSOLAR BOARDS Fine mesh PP geotextile used in conjunction with Bauder substrates. Bauder Filter Fleece is designed to separate and contain Bauder substrates from the drainage element of the green roof system (for slopes 0-5°). It prevents fine material from being washed out of the substrate layer. Loose laid over the drainage layer. The fleece should be taken up the sides of the substrate between the substrate and drainage trim or pebble margin. Fleece joints should be overlapped 150mm. Fleece should not be taken over the top of drainage outlets. Upstands (soft landscaping): Extend up, between vegetation barrier and growing medium and trim flush with finished surface level. Upstands (Hard landscaping): Extend to top of perimeter abutments and trim flush just below finished surface level.
Drainage/Water storage layer: - Bauder BioSOLAR: HDPE integrated solar PV mounting system specifically for Bauder biodiverse or extensive greenroofs. Used on roofs 0-5° finished falls. Loose laid (open cups up) on to the Protection Layer (or WFRL on inverted roofs) over completed waterproofing. Bauder BioSOLAR should be used in conjunction with Bauder Flora 3 Seed Mix which contains both drought and shade tolerant herb and wildflower species and is suitable for roofs with a fall of up to 5°.Bauder BioSOLAR Anchor boards (2m x 1m) must be ballasted using Bauder substrate growing medium, applied directly into the profile cups of the Anchor Boards and then built up to a minimum depth of circa 130mm. Allowance should be made for any settlement that may occur. Please see the project specific Bauder BioSOLAR technical report for further information and required substrate depth. Weight: 156kg/m2. (Includes weight of solar module and saturated Bauder Biodiverse green roof based on substrate depth 130mm). PV module specification - please refer to NBS Engineering services Section V14, clauses 310 and 315 and the corresponding Bauder BioSOLAR technical report for further information on scheme design or Bauder BioSOLAR installation guidelines for further information on installation method.Bauder BioSOLAR is designed to be installed by a Bauder approved and trained contractor only. The number of mounts and fixings required will vary from project to project. Please contact Bauder for a project specific technical report for further information. Windload and snowload calculations will also be provided on a project specific basis and will determine ballast requirements and substrate depths. - Bauder DSE40 Drainage and Protection Layer (To non-BioSOLAR areas): HDPE water storage and multi-directional drainage layer. Used on roofs 0-5° finished falls. Loose laid (open profile cup up) on to the Protection Layer (or WFRL on inverted roofs) over completed waterproofing to provide continuous drainage within hard and soft landscaping. It is primarily used where the load is moderate to high, such as extensive and intensive green roofs. Its compressive strength makes it suitable beneath paving laid on sand/cement or gravel bedding or within planter beds. Boards are to be butted up against the Bauder BioSOLAR. DSE40 to DSE40 boards are to be interlocked by a minimum of one profile cup and all board joints staggered. The ‘X’ stamped impression on the highpoint of the cup moulding indicates where boards overlap. Cut to fit closely around penetrations and outlets.
The drainage/water storage board also provides a suitable base surface for building concrete or brick kerbs/walls. The specified infill haunching should be installed over the board to the required depth of cover, poured directly into the profile cup of the board. These should be constructed to provide an adequate support for the raised masonry planters. Vegetation Barrier/Hard Edge/Fire Break: - Vegetation Barrier (supplied by others) DO NOT INSTALL into the Bauder BioSOLAR Board. 20/40mm round river washed pebbles. A vegetation barrier must be provided to all perimeters, abutments penetrations including protrusions i.e. man-safe posts etc. We recommend 20/40mm rounded river washed pebbles. Stones/aggregates with sharp edges must not be used i.e. flint. In accordance with current GRO guidelines, the specified barrier widths are as follows: -
The current barrier guidelines are set by the GRO codes of practice that Bauder follows and promotes. These are guidelines and not currently a legal requirement under British Standards or Building Regulations. However, not following these guidelines may affect an insurance claim in the unlikely event of a fire. Consequently, Bauder Ltd cannot accept liability for issues arising from non-compliance with the current GRO guidelines. |
Product Options | Vegetation: - Bauder Flora 3 Seed Mix (General/Bauder BioSOLAR A broad mix of low growing and some shade tolerant species ideal, for most roof environments. It is also the mix Bauder recommend for Bauder BioSOLAR installations.
- Wildflowers: 31 (65%) - Annuals: 8 (20%) - Sedge & Grasses: 8 (15%) - Sedum: 2
NOTE: All seed mixes are subject to seasonal seed availability. Installation details: The Bauder Flora Seed Mixes are specifically designed for sowing at roof level, they contain tackifier and fertiliser with the seed to ensure the seed is stuck to the substrate and not blown or washed off the roof, this ensures the highest germination rates. The ideal time for seeding is in the spring and autumn. Please note that increased post installation aftercare will be required for installations that take place during the summer and winter months. Please note that the best time to plant seeds is springtime (late March-April.) or early autumn (Sept/Oct). Avoid sowing in strong winds. The substrate is to be watered immediately prior to application of the seed mix. Sow approximately 50% of the mix longitudinally down the roof, and then over-sow at 90° with the remainder of the mix. DO NOT RAKE THE SEED MIX INTO THE SUBSTRATE SURFACE. The seed mix needs light to germinate. Establishment Watering Requirements The substrate will have been watered prior to application of the seed mix. Please note that the seed mix should only then be lightly watered in during the summer or where activation of the adhesive element is required in exposed locations. Please avoid over-watering to prevent seed washout. Once the seeds have germinated, it is essential that the growing medium is kept moist for a further 10 week period until planting is established. It is the responsibility of the roofing contractor to liaise with the main contractor/ building owner to provide water and ensure that the necessary watering programme (as indicated above) is instigated following installation. An adequate mains water supply of sufficient pressure must be available and operational prior to the plants being delivered and installed. Initial watering must be by surface mounted sprinklers. Refer to the Bauder Watering Guide document for further information on watering. Bauder Ltd accepts no responsibility whatsoever for the condition of installed planting that is not properly watered or irrigated following landscaping works. - Bauder SB Substrate Sedum Blanket System (with Bauder Flora 3 Seed Mix to areas beneath PV panels) Bauder SB Substrate Sedum Blanket System is a mature vegetation blanket, sown with a broad variety of Sedum. It is intended for application directly over levelled Bauder FLL compliant, Extensive Substrate (see Product Data Sheet) as the underlying growing medium. The product is designed to enable rapid rooting to the substrate to speed up establishment times. The SB Substrate Sedum Blanket is grown in the UK. Typically, it is not supplied until it is at least one year old, this ensures the root structure has developed, enabling it to cope with harvesting, transportation and relaying which can stress young sedum plants. The vegetation within this product is a broad mix of hardy sedum species.
Lay immediately on delivery. Growing medium condition: Immediately prior to planting, the whole system should be thoroughly watered to ensure that the water storage/drainage board is filled and the substrate growing medium saturated. Blankets should be laid diagonally or perpendicular to the slope of the roof. Stagger joints, butt together or slightly overlap to prevent gaps. Blankets are not to be stretched. Thoroughly water using surface sprinklers immediately after installation and substrate dressing, ensuring that the blankets and substrate are fully saturated before moving on to the next area. SB Substrate Sedum Blanket should only be layed by skilled operatives. Care should be taken not to traffic the sedum during or after installation. See Bauder’s Green Roof Installation Guide for full details. Establishment Watering Requirements SB Substrate Sedum Blanket requires surface watering for the first 4 weeks following installation (to ensure the substrate remains moist). It is the responsibility of the roofing contractor to liaise with the main contractor/ building owner to provide water and ensure that the planted and fertilised growing medium is thoroughly irrigated immediately after installation. An adequate mains water supply, of sufficient pressure, must be available and operational prior to the plants being delivered and installed. Initial watering must be by surface mounted sprinklers. See the Bauder Watering Guide document for detailed information on watering requirements. Bauder Ltd accepts no responsibility whatsoever for the condition of installed planting that is not properly watered or irrigated following landscaping works. Bauder Flora 3 seed mix to areas underneath the PV panels, please follow guidance notes for Bauder Flora 3 Seed Mix. Note: Other vegetation options are not advisable directly under or around the Bauder BioSOLAR system, if required on other areas of the roof, these areas should be kept separate from the Bauder BioSOLAR and therefore be detailed under a separate specification. Protection layer: - Bauder FSM 600 Protection Mat: Heavy duty protection layer made from polyester and polypropylene fibres. Laid on the completed waterproofing to protect the completed waterproofing from damage (not required for inverted roofs).Normally installed under the entire green roof area but kept clear of all outlets and drainage trims. FSM mats should be lapped by 150mm at all joints. Loose laid. Laps to be sealed by lightly heating overlap area with a propane gas torch / hot air welding gun to melt the polypropylene fibres and then press seal the two fleece sheets together. Sufficient protection fleece must be allowed for so that it may be installed to all abutment upstands and edge details, in accordance with the Bauder instructions. Extend to full height of the upstand and secure in place by using a lead or fabricated metal counter-flashing. Should be trimmed well back from ALL outlets. Openings in landscape restraint kerbs (where present - roof slopes above 5º), the protection layer should be cut away from the openings/ gaps to avoid impeding drainage.

Normally installed under the entire green roof area but kept clear of all outlets and drainage trims. Normally installed to provide access over waterproofing in heavily trafficked areas Pro-mat should be lapped by 150mm at all joints. Loose laid. Where landscaping installation is not imminent, loose laps should be taped with gaffer tape to eliminate the trip hazard.
Accessories: - Bauder AL150 Edge and Drainage Trim: Perforated edge/drainage trim used to frame and contain the green roof build-up. AL150 is specifically for use within substrate based green roofs. AL150 must always be used in conjunction with the pebble vegetation barrier (below 10° only) / or hard edge (such as a paver). Normally installed directly onto waterproofing, the drainage trims can be welded down using lengths of the waterproofing membrane. The trim is used to frame the green roof build up and should be completed and inspected prior to living material being delivered to site. See Bauder Green Roof Installation Guide for full details.
Precautionary note: when cutting metal, please ensure that appropriate tools and personal protection equipment are used. - Bauder ALU250 Inspection Chamber System: The Bauder ALU250 Inspection Chamber is fabricated from a perforated aluminium sheet with an opening/lockable lid and is used for intensive and extensive soft landscaping, as well as ballasted inverted roofs. Install centrally over rainwater outlets. A simple on-site modification allows the unit to be used over outlets that are located close to wall or kerb abutments. The Inspection Chamber is suitable for landscaping depths of less than 100mm. Where landscaping is deeper than 100mm, the 50mm or 100mm height adaptors can be added as necessary to achieve the required height to be level with or slightly proud of the surrounding landscaping. Surround: Using 20/40mm grade washed pebbles; the inspection chamber must be surrounded by a 500mm vegetation barrier to prevent unwanted growth obstructing the drainage system. - Jute Anti-Erosion Net (supplied by others) Bio-degradable jute netting supplied by others. Installed over plug planted/seeded growing medium to prevent wind erosion until planting established. Where the exposure of the roof is such that there is a risk of the substrate being subject to wind erosion, provision must be made to install biodegradable (Jute) erosion net (supplied by others) over the installed substrate, to prevent erosion until the plants are established. The net should be secured using bio-degradable pegs. - Irrigation (supplied by others): Irrigation between the rows of PV panels is not recommended, however the facility to water this vegetation in times of prolonged drought should be considered. Irrigation of the other areas of the biodiverse green roof is dependent upon the client requirement for the visual appearance of the vegetation. If it is intended that the roof should have colour and interest for the longest period through the growing season, then irrigation will significantly aid in achieving this. Should the requirement be only to deliver biodiversity, then the provision of sufficient watering points at roof level to allow for only occasional watering in periods of prolonged drought can be considered sufficient. It is cheaper periodically to add water than to replace planting. When the Bauder Flora Seed Mix is installed we recommend the provision of either a leaky pipe or drip line irrigation system. Bauder recommend provision is made for an irrigation system to any substrate based green roof. Please note - continuous daily watering is neither recommended nor necessary and will only promote weeds and other unwanted plant species. Fertiliser should ideally be applied during March/April, as it helps the plants to prepare for extreme weather conditions and flowering whilst also allowing the different species to gain sufficient nutrients without competing against each other. Organic fertilizer can be obtained direct from Bauder in 25kg bags, which is sufficient for an area of 312.5m2 when applied at the recommended rate of 80g/m². Areas of up to 30m² may be applied using either a handheld spreader or strewn by hand from a bucket. Larger roofs should always be done using a trolley applicator, which can be purchased direct from Bauder. Always apply the fertiliser at the given rate written on the bag. It is recommended that the fertiliser is lightly ‘watered in’ immediately after application, to avoid “burning” of the foliage, which may occur if fertilizer pellets settle on the leaves. Dung-based organic fertilizers should be avoided. - Bauder Maintenance services: Bauder BioSOLAR system has relatively low maintenance requirements, however they are extremely important to the condition and performance of the system. Example maintenance requirements below:
Removing unwanted leaf litter that has fallen onto the roof surface.
