Quiet Mark Certification

Quiet Mark is the independent global certification programme founded in 2012 associated with the UK Noise Abatement Society (NAS) the charitable foundation (est.1959) in its 64th year, the only UK national registered charitable foundation whose sole focus is to help stop excessive and unnecessary noise to protect the public and improve the aural environment.

In 1960, recognising that exposure to persistent, unwanted sound was detrimental to human health and wellbeing, productivity and quality of life, NAS founder John Connell OBE lobbied the Noise Abatement Act through the UK Parliament making noise a statutory nuisance for the first time in the UK.

Quiet Mark is the third-generation product certification organisation, founded by John’s daughter Gloria Connell OBE CEO of NAS today and granddaughter Poppy Szkiler CEO of Quiet Mark, sharing the same remit as the NAS to provide a better understanding of what sound is, how it affects us and how we can solve noise problems in a pragmatic and sustainable way. Its internationally respected work helps to relieve the physical and mental distress caused by excessive noise which profoundly affects health and wellbeing, learning, productivity and social cohesion.

Quiet Mark conducts expert scientific testing, acoustic measurement assessments and verifies the claims and performance of manufacturers to identify the quietest and best performing noise reduction materials and products in multiple categories spanning many sectors, including: home appliances and technology, building sector materials and commercial sector products.

Quiet Mark certification is the unique consumer and trade champion mark of approval and resource platform at Quiet Mark.com. It provides reliable and independent information about the sound a product makes and approved noise reduction performance, organised in an easy to use guide for each area of application, before purchase with the primary focus to improve health and wellbeing. Stimulating manufacturing worldwide to prioritise responsible acoustic design to reduce noise pollution.

Quiet Mark leads its definitive acoustic measurement system engaging with global specialist acoustic teams. Quiet Mark conducts assessments of declared technical test data, and acoustic measurement of products in the purpose-built Quiet Mark test laboratory and specialist acoustic lab partners including Anderson Acoustics, Head Acoustics and Intertek, assigned for specialism for each specific product category.

Between 10% to 20% of the quietest best performing products are awarded Quiet Mark certification. Each product category is re-evaluated annually to reflect new models coming on to the market.

Quiet Mark’s high profile campaign helps buyers find the healthiest acoustic products including partnerships with UK’s largest retailer and media groups, finding many ways to unlock insights on the fascinating world of sound and acoustics to the mainstream including producing and distribution partnership of critically acclaimed In Pursuit of Silence feature film documentary release in UK, Europe, US and Asia and The Quiet Mark Treehouse creative showcase tour of 2014.

Because sound is invisible it is often overlooked yet the fundamental impact it has on all the physical rhythms of our bodies, our hormones, heart-rate and brain waves, is so profound and inherent to our wellbeing and therefore also to the design process of the buildings we live in. Quiet Mark is passionate about elevating wellbeing through improved acoustics in the built environment. Just as Quiet Mark’s retailer partnerships have helped consumers to reduce unwanted noise in their homes, Quiet Mark has partnered with NBS, the leading construction specification platform, to enable industry-wide architects and specifiers to now more easily source verified acoustic products and materials, to create healthier buildings for the generations to come.
