Natural smoke ventilation systems for student accommodation blocks. Greenbank Student Village was a development scheme by the University of Liverpool. The new build accommodation has created 1,370 bedrooms for University students. The redevelopment saw six buildings replaced by three new student accommodation blocks; Derby Hall, Rathbone Hall and Gladstone Hall.

Dyer Environmental Controls Ltd have supplied a mechanical smoke ventilation system to Beacon Tower, a recently renovated block of residential flats in Bristol. Mechanical smoke ventilation is a Fire Engineered Solution, designed to speedily remove smoke from common areas such as corridors and lobbies. It is a very efficient solution proven to work by using a design system known as CFD Computational Fluid Dynamics.

No.1 Old Trafford provides 214,000 square feet of residential and amenity space, including 354 apartments over two blocks rising to 14 and 17 storeys tall respectively. The waterfront setting includes the newly created tram stop providing excellent links to central Manchester and Salford Quays.

Dyer provided a sophisticated and complex system for the mechanical smoke ventilation across the two blocks. The system was chosen as it meets all the design criteria and applicable EN standards. The simple wiring system meant the cables could be installed early in the construction program, allowing the builder to complete the internal finishes.

This project is significant as it is the first D+H mechanical smoke ventilation system to be installed in the UK.

Dyer and Fieger combined to install a new smoke vent louvre system in 2 high rise blocks in Eccles. This EN-Certified smoke louvre provides a more effective smoke ventilation system whilst proving a similar and safer natural ventilation solution, especially at high level. Dyer Environmental Controls worked closely with Fieger in order to develop a bespoke design. Together, Dyer and Fieger provided a practicable solution to meet the combined requirements of Approved Document B and Approved Document K.

Dyer supplied and installed 94 electrical window drives for natural day to day ventilation. The 24v 600mm stroke D+H CDC drives operate 50 windows. 44 windows are operated by pairs of drives, six smaller windows require just a single drive each. Dyer Engineers electronically programmed the drives on site to meet the required free area figures and where required, supplied extended 5m cables concealed within the framework. The drives are controlled directly from the Building Management System. Dyer’s automatic electrical window opening systems are cost effective to install, run and maintain.

State-of-the-art natural ventilation at a state-of-the-art learning facility. Project: The School of Engineering building at the University of Birmingham is a brand new state-of-the-art 12,000 sqm facility, spanning across five floors featuring a double-height atrium. The 46.5M development brings together many engineering disciplines from across the University. The building’s contemporary and flexible design enables collaborative working between academics, researchers, students and staff. System: Dyer provided natural ventilation within offices and meeting rooms around the facility. Dyer supplied and installed a total of 98 intelligent CDC chain drives, one per window: 74 of these drives are concealed within the frames of bottom hung open inward windows, with specially manufactured flexible chains to allow the sash to open without clashing with the chain. 24 drives are surface mounted, operating top hung outward opening windows, with a larger opening stroke. Advanced Communication Bus (ACB) allows our D+H drives to communicate with the BMS directly via Modbus without additional control panels, which provides true feedback on their opening and conditions. It significantly reduces wiring, installation effort and costs, and makes it possible to specify direct control of the drives down to the millimetre. Brackets and drives were powder coated to match the window framework, providing a seamless finish.

Project The residential blocks required new natural smoke ventilation systems. Dyer replaced the old systems with certified NSHEV windows, control panels and unique wiring. System Dyer replaced existing windows, fixed windows and louvres with certified NSHEV windows on all floors of both blocks. Dyer’s work also included the installation of controls and wiring. Our new D+H ACB-Bus drives and CPS-M control system allows us to significantly reduce wiring costs and containment. We are able to provide a single cable for power and control to multiple zones. Each drive can be programmed accordingly for independent operation.
