Application

Permarock Mineral Fibre EWI systems are suitable for use above damp-proof course (DPC) level on buildings of dense or no-fines concrete, brickwork, blockwork, or suitably sheathed light steel frame or timber frame buildings, in any geographical location including those classified as having very severe exposure to wind-driven rain.

The System is a mechanically and adhesively fixed, mineral wool insulated, external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS).

Suitable for residential and non-residential building types of any height where the highest levels of fire safety and non-combustibility are required.

Permarock systems are only for installation by Permarock registered installers.

A layer of basecoat with reinforcement mesh is applied to the mineral fibre insulation boards. The System is finished with the Permarock K & R Primer, Brick Slip Adhesive, Brick Facings and Pointing Mortar.

When applying the system to existing masonry walls, all existing rendered coatings must be removed in their entirety. The surfaces must then be treated with the Permarock Fungicidal Wash, followed by the application of the Permarock Dubbing-out Compound to achieve a uniform substrate suitable for the installation of the Permarock EWI system.

When applying the system to new build masonry walls, all new walls shall be allowed to dry and settle for at least 2 weeks prior to applying the Permarock EWI system.

When applying the system to sheathed SFS / TF walls, substrates are required to be sound, dimensionally stable, clean and dry. Sheathed steel / timber panels shall be flush / in-pane, plumb and true to line and level.

Application of Brick Slips:

The substrates must be even, clean, dry, dimensionally stable, solid and free from all materials that may

prevent good adhesion. Substrates shall be primed with Permarock K&R Primer before applying the Permarock Adhesive Mortar.

Apply Permarock Adhesive Mortar onto the dry, primed (if required) reinforcement layer. At external corners, additional adhesive should be applied to ensure that air pockets are not trapped behind the tiles during installation.

The brick tiles shall then be pressed into the adhesive mortar and pushed/floated into place before the mortar has begun to film over. The tiles must be fully bedded onto the adhesive without voids. Ensure that the Brick Facings are completely sealed with mortar for the full perimeter of each brick tile.

Allow the adhesive to harden before commencing application of Brick Slip Pointing Mortar. Permarock Brick Slip Pointing Mortar, in the selected colour, is applied using a brick pointing trowel to fill the horizontal and vertical joints between the brick tiles.

Working Temperature:

Processing temperature: +5 °C to +30 °C during application and curing for material, atmosphere and substrate. The product should not be applied on sun-heated substrates, during strong wind, fog or rain.

Design considerations:

  • U-value calculations can be carried out for each project to determine the thickness of insulation required to achieve particular thermal performance requirements;
  • For high-rise buildings, a wind load assessment should be carried out by a suitably qualified structural engineer and the results should be provided to Permarock to enable an optimised fixing arrangement to be provided;
  • Contact Permarock to discuss your proposed design to enable us to assist you in specifying the correct system and component parts;
  • Further information can be obtained from Permarock's Technical Hub

Beads and trims:

  • A full range of beads, trims, profiles and seals is available to enable the system to be interfaced with other building elements.

Permarock Mineral Fibre Insulation boards are dual-density, non-combustible thermal insulation boards used as the insulation layer within Permarock Mineral Fibre external wall insulation systems.

The Permarock Mineral Fibre insulation is adhesively bonded and mechanically fixed and can be applied onto walls of dense or no-fines concrete, brickwork, blockwork, or suitably sheathed light steel frame or timber frame construction, in any geographical location including those classified as having very severe exposure to wind-driven rain.

The Permarock Mineral Fibre Insulation boards carry full accreditation in accordance with our KIWA BDA Agrément certificate.

Advantages:

  • Non-combustible - Class A1 (BS EN 13501-1);
  • Dimensionally stable;
  • Stable thermal performance using entrapped air - will not deteriorate;
  • Superior acoustic performance compared with rigid foam insulants;
  • Low embodied energy;
  • High water vapour permeability - allows walls to 'breathe'.

Technical Data:

  • Fire Behaviour: A1;
  • Standard dimensions (mm): 1200 x 600;
  • Standard thicknesses (mm): 50 - 250 mm in 10 mm increments;
  • Thermal conductivity: 0.036 W/m2K;
  • Reaction to fire: Class A1 (BS EN 13501-1) - non-combustible;
  • Tensile strength: TR10 (BS EN 13162:2012 + A1:2015);
  • Colour: yellow-green.

Permarock Mineral Fibre DD Insulation has a high density outer face (to receive the render system) and a lower density backing.

Permarock Adhesive should be applied to the back face (lower density) to enable bonding to substrate (brickwork, blockwork and dense or no-fines concrete and other uneven surfaces). The lower density material will accommodate slight imperfections in the surface of the building fabric.

Permarock Lamella Adhesive is used for bonding to smooth mineral substrates, such as sheathing boards.

In addition to adhesive bonding, Permarock Mineral Fibre Insulation boards must also be mechanically fixed using suitable Permarock approved fixings.

Permarock Brick Slips are a lightweight, flexible and breathable synthetic resin tile used to replicate brick or stonework with the ability to create unique and interesting facade designs that are durable, robust and impact-resistant.

Manufactured from high-quality raw materials, Permarock Brick Slips are, as standard, supplied as facing and corner (pistol) brick slips in a range of 12 standard colours and 3 textures: Special colours, textures, sizes and shapes can be manufactured to order (minimum order quantities).

The Brick Slip Adhesive used to fix the slips is available in three standard colours (cement-grey, sandwhite and dark grey). The joints are pointed using Permarock Pointing Mortar (cement-grey) - other colours are available subject to minimum order quantities.

Permarock Brick Slips are assessed to EN 13501-1 and when used as the decorative finish of a Permarock Mineral Fibre EWI system, the system achieves an A2-s1-d0 classification and is suitable for use on buildings of any height, including those with a storey height above 11 m, and in proximity to any boundary without restriction.

Colour Range: 12 colours with colour matching available, subject to minimum order quantities.

The Permarock Brick Slips come in three distinct textures; flat, textured and sand particles.

Sizes / Coverage:

  • Flat facing bricks: 215mm x 65mm x 4-6mm thick;
  • Corner facing bricks: 215mm x 102mm x 65mm x 4-6mm thick;
  • Approx. 58 slips (215mm x 65mm) per m²;

Coverage Rates:

  • Permarock Brick Slip Adhesive: approx. 3 - 4 kg/m2;
  • Permarock Pointing Mortar: approx. 3 - 5 kg/m2;
  • Permarock Brick Facings (UK Brick Size – 215mm x 65mm): Each full box of facings contains 174 pieces, sufficient to cover approximately 3m2 of wall surface;
  • Permarock Brick Corners (UK Brick Size – 215mm x 102.5mm x 65mm): Each full box of brick corners contains 40 pieces, sufficient for approximately 3 metres of external corner.

Lime Bloom: Lime bloom manifests itself as a lightening of colour caused by the formation of a fine surface deposit of calcium carbonate on cement-based renders. Lime bloom can occur as an overall lightening of the render colour, or as heavier deposits, sometimes uniformly distributed across the surface, sometimes patchy in appearance. Colour variations tend to be more obvious when lime bloom occurs on uniformly coloured or darker coloured renders.

Lime bloom is a naturally occurring phenomenon, is purely superficial and has no detrimental effect on the durability, strength or performance of the render - it cannot therefore be deemed a technical failure in any respect.

Further information on lime bloom, its causes, and mitigation measures can be found in Permarock technical Bulletin TB008.
