Application

The system is for installation above damp proof course level on external sheathed light gauge steel frame supporting walls.

Suitable for a range of projects including residential buildings, schools, student accommodation, remediation, and high raise projects, in existing and new buildings.

Licatatherm steel mineral brick slip system has been designed for steel frame substrates on a sheathing board.

The system consists of mineral wool insulation boards which are mechanically and adhesively fixed, mechanically fixed through the basecoat, and reinforcement mesh to the supporting wall. A secondary layer of basecoat is applied followed by the adhesive mortar and pointing mortar that gives the finish mineral brick slips a realistic image.

Featuring great durability, water repellent surface and protection against algae and mould. With increased strength and crack resistance, due to the glass fibre mesh.

The system fire classification is A2-s1, d0 in accordance with BS EN 13501-1, and tested 120’ fire resistance both directions in accordance with BS EN 1363-1 & BS EN 1364-1, with a wide range of finishes and colours and bespoke and special shapes and dimensions available.

Description

LicataTherm External wall insulation system for light steel frame substrates onto 12 mm A1 sheathing board, incorporating an A1 non-combustible mineral wool insulation board, this system achieves a system fire classification of A2-s1, d0 to BS EN 13501-1, allowing it to be used on a building of any height.

Engineered to excel in the UK climate, it has a organically bound cement free flexible brick slips in a typical size of 215 x 65 x 4 mm as finish coat. The thermal benefits come from the mix of components of the system. The direct fix application allows the system to be directly mechanically fixed and with adhesive, removing the need for a cavity and the cavity fire-stopping behind the insulation.

Features and benefits:

  • Direct fix.
  • Breathable.
  • Reduced drying time.
  • Fire classification: A2-s1, d0 to EN 13501-1.

System performance

Fire performance: A2-s1, d0 in accordance with BS EN 13501-1.
Tested 120’ fire resistance both directions in accordance with BS EN 1363-1 and BS EN 1364-1.
Durability: 30 years.
Impact resistance Category I.

Preparation

A pre-installation survey of the property must be carried out by the approved installers to determine suitability for treatment and the need for any necessary repairs to the building substrate before application of the system. The survey should include tests conducted on the walls of the building to determine the pull-out resistance of the proposed mechanical fixings.
For cement board substrates, if Licata boards are used there is no need of pullout tests as already tested and installation instructions, patterns and approved fixings will be supplied.
All modifications, such as alterations to external plumbing and necessary repairs to the building substrate, must be completed before installation of the system commences. Surfaces should be sound, clean, and free from loose material. The flatness of surfaces must be checked; this may be achieved using a straight-edge tool spanning the storey height. Any excessive irregularities, i.e. greater than 10 mm, must be made good prior to installation, to ensure that the insulation slabs are installed with a smooth, in-plane finished surface.
Where surfaces are covered with an existing render, it is essential that the bond between the background and the render is adequate. All loose areas should be hacked off and reinstated.
On existing buildings, purpose-made sills and copings must be fitted to extend beyond the finished face of the system. New buildings should incorporate suitably deep sills and copings.
In new buildings, internal wet work (e.g. screeding or plastering) should be completed and allowed to dry prior to the application of the system.

Decorative finish

Mineral brick slips with organically bound water based polymer dispersion adhesive.

Guidance for specification option:

Mineral brick slips:

High-quality, organically bonded tiling strips made from mineral raw materials, available in a wide range of colours, finishes, and sizes. Mark out the area using chalk lines, aligning with windows and doors. Apply slips evenly, pressing firmly into mortar and removing trapped air. Cut to size with a sharp knife if required. Begin pointing immediately, brushing mortar into joints to fully seal.

Adhesive:

Organically bound water based polymer dispersion adhesive. containing liquid pigments and fillers, suitable for use with mineral brick slips. Apply the adhesive to the base coat prior to installing the brick slip finish. Do not apply more bedding mortar than can be immediately covered by the slips. The adhesive offers excellent workability, and subsequent grouting is not required.
