Application

The system is for installation above damp proof course level on external sheathed light gauge steel frame supporting walls.

Suitable for a range of projects including residential buildings, schools, student accommodation, remediation, and high raise projects, in existing and new buildings.

Licatatherm clay brick slip System has been designed for steel frame substrates on a sheathing board. The system consists of mineral wool insulation boards which are mechanically and adhesively fixed, mechanically fixed through the basecoat, and reinforcement mesh to the supporting wall. A secondary layer of basecoat, is applied followed by the adhesive mortar and pointing mortar that gives the finish clay brick slips a realistic image. Featuring great durability, water repellent surface and protection against algae and mould. With increased strength and crack resistance, due to the glass fibre mesh. The system fire classification is A1 in accordance with BS EN 13501-1, and tested 120’ fire resistance both directions in accordance with BS EN 1363-1 & BS EN 1364-1, With a wide range of finishes and colours, bespoke, special shapes and dimensions available.

Description

LicataTherm External wall insulation system for light steel frame substrates onto 12 mm A1 sheathing board, incorporating an A1 non-combustible mineral wool insulation board, this system achieves a system fire classification of A1 to BS EN 13501-1, allowing it to be used on a building of any height.

Engineered to excel in the UK climate, it has a range of clay brick slips in a typical size of 215 x 65 x 15 mm as finish coat. The thermal benefits come from the mix of components of the system. The direct fix application allows the system to be directly mechanically fixed and with adhesive, removing the need for a cavity and the cavity fire-stopping behind the insulation

Features and benefits:

  • Direct fix.
  • Breathable.
  • Reduced drying time.
  • Fire classification: A1 to EN 13501-1.
  • Design life: 30 years.

System performance

Fire performance: A1 in accordance with BS EN 13501-1, and tested 120’ fire resistance both directions in accordance with BS EN 1363-1 and BS EN 1364-1.
Durability: 30 years.
Impact resistance Category I.

Preparation

A pre-installation survey of the property must be carried out by the approved installers to determine suitability for treatment and the need for any necessary repairs to the building substrate before application of the system. The survey should include tests conducted on the walls of the building to determine the pull-out resistance of the proposed mechanical fixings.

For cement board substrates, if Licata boards are used there is no need of pullout tests as already tested and installation instructions, patterns and approved fixings will be supplied. All modifications, such as alterations to external plumbing and necessary repairs to the building substrate, must be completed before installation of the system commences.

Surfaces should be sound, clean, and free from loose material. The flatness of surfaces must be checked; this may be achieved using a straight-edge tool spanning the storey height. Any excessive irregularities, i.e. greater than 10 mm must be made good prior to installation, to ensure that the insulation slabs are installed with a smooth, in-plane finished surface.
Where surfaces are covered with an existing render, it is essential that the bond between the background and the render is adequate. All loose areas should be hacked off and reinstated.
On existing buildings, purpose-made sills and copings must be fitted to extend beyond the finished face of the system.
New buildings should incorporate suitably deep sills and copings. In new buildings, internal wet work (e.g. screeding or plastering) should be completed and allowed to dry prior to the application of the system.

Decorative finish

Clay brick slips applied with Super S1 adhesive and finished with Lime Green brick slip jointing mortar.

Guidance for specification option:

  • Adhesive Super S1: High-performance, low-modulus cementitious adhesive, C2TE-S1 certified to UNI EN 12002, suitable for thin-layer bonding of brick slips. Mix 25 kg with 6.5–7 litres of clean water to achieve a homogeneous, lump-free consistency. Apply with a 6–10 mm notched trowel to a maximum thickness of 5 mm, ensuring full coverage. Ensure slips are clean and free from dust. Press firmly into adhesive. Working time is approximately 30 minutes, depending on conditions.
  • Clay Brick Slips: Wall covering tiles made from clay and ceramic materials, manufactured in accordance with EN 14411:2012, available in a wide range of colours, finishes, and dimensions. Mark out the area to be covered using chalk lines to achieve the required height and bond. Use existing features, such as window and door lines, as reference points when setting out.
  • Pointing mortar: The clay brick slip system shall be finished with full pointing using Lime Green Brick Slip jointing mortar. Supplied pre-mixed, requiring only the addition of water, it provides a balance of breathability and durability and is available in a range of colours. Stir thoroughly before use, adding a small amount of clean water if required to adjust consistency. Apply using a pointing trowel, ensuring joints are fully filled and finished with light pressure for a smooth surface.
