Application

The LicataTherm Masonry EPS Silicone Render External Wall Insulation System is applied to external masonry walls to improve thermal performance and provide a durable, decorative finish.

Installation typically begins with assessment and preparation of the substrate to ensure it is clean, sound, and free from contaminants. A starter track is fixed at the base level, and EPS insulation boards are then adhesively bonded and/or mechanically fixed to the substrate in a staggered pattern to minimise thermal bridging.

Once the insulation layer is installed, a polymer-modified basecoat is applied, into which an alkali-resistant glass fibre reinforcing mesh is embedded to provide strength and impact resistance. Additional reinforcement is incorporated around openings and stress points such as windows, doors, and corners.

After curing of the basecoat, a primer is applied where required, followed by the silicone render finish. The render is applied to the specified thickness and finished to the desired texture.

The system is suitable for use on residential, commercial, and public sector buildings, including refurbishment of existing properties and new-build construction. It can be applied to a variety of masonry substrates, including brickwork, blockwork, and concrete, subject to suitability assessment.

Description

The LicataTherm Masonry EPS Silicone Render External Wall Insulation System is a high-performance external wall insulation (EWI) solution designed for upgrading the thermal efficiency and appearance of existing and new-build masonry substrates.

This system incorporates expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation boards mechanically and/or adhesively fixed to the external face of the wall, reinforced with a polymer-modified basecoat and alkali-resistant glass fibre mesh, and finished with a durable, breathable silicone render.

The system is engineered to significantly reduce heat loss, improve airtightness, and enhance the overall energy performance of buildings, helping to meet current Building Regulations and energy efficiency targets. It is suitable for use on a range of masonry substrates including brick, blockwork, and concrete.

The silicone render finish provides excellent weather resistance, high water repellency, and vapour permeability, helping to protect the building fabric while allowing it to breathe. Its flexibility reduces the risk of cracking, and its low dirt pickup properties ensure a long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing façade with minimal maintenance.

If installed by an approved Licata installer, both 10 and 25 year material warranties are available depending on the project requirements and detailing. 25-year warranties can be under written to meet the requirements of EWI energy saving grants.


Licata provides guarantees for material defects on all Licata approved systems that are installed by their accredited contractors.

These guarantees are valid for the initial ten years of the system's life and in addition they can also offer 25 years' extended warranties for projects supported by government schemes, extended warranties are available through third-party insurance partners such as SWIGA, subject to terms and conditions.

Existing substrates that show visible signs of algae and mold will require treating with an approved proprietary biocidal wash prior to any render works.

Greutherm White and Grey Expanded Polystyrene (EPS 70 and EPS 100) Insulation Boards, 1200 x 600 mm in a range of thicknesses from 40–200 mm, with a nominal density of 15 to 26 kg·m³, compressive strength of 70 kN·m² and 100 kN·m², and a minimum tensile strength of 150 kPa. Boards are manufactured to comply with BS EN 13163: 2012 and classified as Euroclass E in accordance with BS EN 13501-1: 2007.

Manufacturer guidance

Designed and tested to meet the current wind load and suction requirements, the system is adhesively fixed with supplementary fixings in accordance with BS EN 1991-1-4:2005. Special consideration should be given to locations with high wind-load pressure coefficients, as additional fixings may be necessary. It is recommended that a load factor of 1.5 is used to determine the ultimate wind load, in accordance with BS EN 1990:2002.
