Application

For external wall and cladding applications.

Description

BCL Secret fix timber slat cladding panels for external wall and cladding applications. The panels are available in hit and miss, shiplap, tongue and groove, board-on-board and featheredge styles.

The secret-fixings in our timber cladding panels remove surface weaknesses and penetrations caused from traditional face-fix screws and nails to the exposed face of each timber slat, meaning exposed timber panels age better and timber cladding coatings last longer.

There are different fixing systems for external walls, depending on whether the cladding is open-jointed or closed-jointed timber:

  • Direct fix - Cladding panels are screwed directly to the primary support grid, through pre-punched aluminium fixing strips at the back of each panel. This option is used when there are gaps between each timber slat incorporated in the panel configuration.
  • Cover batten - Timber Cladding panels are screwed to the primary support grid with solid wood slat fascias or 'cover slats' fixed on top of panel junctions to hide any direct panel fixings. Note this method can only be used on 19 mm thick timber slats.

Features and benefits:

  • Full systems fire testing to EN 13501-1.
  • BIM level 4 Full system design (in Revit or similar).
  • SIDOS Compliant ‘Bomb-blast’ grids available.
  • Flexible panel sizes to suit layouts - no cutting = < 1% waste.
  • Secret-fixings - timber cladding panels age better and coatings last longer.
  • Solid timber slats - natural variation and beauty.
  • FSC® and PEFC certified - Full BREEAM Mat03 credits.
  • High recycled content (typically 20%).
  • High natural/ organic content (typically 65%).
  • Bespoke fire retardant colour coatings.
  • Direct installation service.

Manufacturer guidance

Please contact BCL to determine which timber is certified FSC® or PEFC according to your requirements.

Reaction to fire classification

-

Manufacturer guidance

BCL perform full systems fire testing to EN 13501-1, in line with Approved Document B regulation for composite lining systems.

The solid timber slats are typically pressure treated with non-hazardous (zero biocide) fire retardant to achieve either Euroclass B or C external timber cladding. Consult manufacturer for details.

Wood species

Western Red Cedar.
Larch (EU).
Bamboo (strand woven).
Sweet Chestnut.
Douglas Fir.
Red Grandis.
DragonWood (charred effect).
Kebony (dark thermo-modified Pine).
Thermo Euro-Pine.
Thermo Ash (UK).
Thermo Poplar (UK).
Accoya.
Oak (solid).
Alaskan Yellow Cedar.

Quality of timber (exposed surfaces)

-

Manufacturer guidance

BCL can provide different harmonised grading quality levels for available species as per industry standards (e.g. QF1 for Oak, or FAS/1F), but not any bespoke or project specific unique rules created for purpose.

Flame-retardant treatment

Non-hazardous (zero biocide) fire retardent.

Preservative treatment

-

Manufacturer guidance

BCL do not recommend using any preservative treatment as this is usually not environmentally friendly. BCL recommends using a naturally durable, fit for purpose species from the standard range.

Fixing

Direct fix.

Guidance for specification option:

Panels are fixed to wall using painted screws located in between timber slats @ 600 mm ccs.

Cannot be used for 'closed board' systems.

Cover batten.

Guidance for specification option:

Panels are fixed to wall and a timber 'cover slat' is bradnailed over panel junction to hide screws @ 600 mm ccs.

Can only be used for systems w/ 19 mm thick timber slats.
