A major refurbishment programme at a live hospital in Sheffield required high-performance floor preparation within newly upgraded operating theatres. The works formed part of a phased redevelopment designed to deliver state-of-the-art surgical facilities while maintaining continuous operation of adjacent clinical areas. The project presented significant logistical and technical challenges, including restricted working windows, strict health and safety requirements, and the need to minimise noise, dust, and disruption in a sensitive environment.

The programme demanded rapid installation and turnaround, with a strict 72-hour window allocated to complete substrate preparation and levelling before handover for follow-on trades. Careful planning was required to coordinate deliveries and installation activities, including out-of-hours working to maximise productivity within the available timeframe. In addition to programme constraints, the finished floor needed to meet demanding performance criteria, particularly in relation to surface flatness and finish tolerances required for the precise placement of operating equipment.

To achieve the required performance, the substrate was prepared using weberfloor 4716 primer, an acrylic primer designed to regulate suction and promote adhesion. This ensured a stable and consistent base for the levelling system, reducing the risk of surface defects and supporting reliable curing under time-sensitive conditions.

Following priming, weberfloor smooth rapid 4160 was applied as a self-smoothing levelling screed across the prepared areas. The product was selected for its fast-drying characteristics and ease of application, enabling efficient installation within the restricted timeframe. Suitable for application at thicknesses between 2mm and 30mm, it provides excellent flow and levelling properties, creating a high-quality surface finish across a range of substrate types.

A critical requirement of the project was achieving SR1 surface regularity, the highest standard of flatness, necessary where thin floor coverings are used and minimal deviation is essential. The levelling system successfully delivered the required tolerance, ensuring the finished surface met the exacting standards associated with operating theatre environments.

Performance on site demonstrated clear programme advantages. The installed system allowed light foot traffic within a few hours and enabled subsequent floor finishes to be installed after approximately 24 hours. This rapid drying capability supported the completion of around 600m² of flooring within a three-day period, aligning with the strict programme requirements without compromising quality.

The finished substrate provided a durable and consistent base suitable for specialist vinyl floor coverings, meeting the hygiene and performance demands of a healthcare setting. The inclusion of low dust technology also helped to reduce airborne particles during mixing, contributing to improved working conditions within a live hospital environment.

The combination of weberfloor 4716 primer and weberfloor smooth rapid 4160 delivered a reliable, fast-track flooring solution capable of meeting the technical, operational, and programme demands of complex healthcare refurbishment. The system provided high levels of accuracy, rapid turnaround, and efficient installation in a challenging environment where precision and minimal disruption were essential.
