Heckington Windmill, Sleaford

A refurbishment project formed part of the regeneration of historic buildings surrounding a Grade I listed windmill in Lincolnshire. The works focused on converting former agricultural buildings into a visitor centre, exhibition space and retail area, while carefully retaining the character and function of the original structures.

The existing floors were in poor condition, with significant damage and uneven levels that needed to be addressed sensitively to suit the heritage setting. The flooring solution was required to deliver durable, level and accessible surfaces without compromising the agro‑industrial appearance of the buildings.

To manage residual moisture within the existing substrates, a damp proof system was installed using weberfloor DPM Pro. This moisture‑tolerant epoxy resin system allowed flooring works to proceed without extended drying times, which was particularly important in the refurbishment of older buildings where moisture levels can be variable.

All substrates were then pre‑treated with weberfloor 4716 primer to regulate porosity, improve adhesion and reduce the risk of pinholing in subsequent layers. This ensured a consistent surface condition across the varying substrates present within the historic structures.

A pump‑applied, rapid‑hardening industrial screed, weberfloor 4610 industry top, was installed to level and smooth the floors. The screed was selected for its self‑smoothing characteristics, high strength performance and ability to accept foot traffic within a short timeframe, supporting programme efficiency during the refurbishment works.

The completed flooring provides level, accessible and durable surfaces suitable for public use, while retaining the visual character of an agro‑industrial building. The weberfloor system delivers long‑term performance within a visitor environment and contributes to the successful regeneration of a nationally significant heritage site.
