SPORTCOMPLEX DE VLIET – PETRARCH PANELS CONNECT THE CITY AND THE LANDSCAPE

Situated on the edge of Leiden, Sportcomplex De Vliet forms the

new centrepiece of the wider Sportpark De Vliet. The site lies within

a transitional zone between the urban fabric and the open polder

landscape.

Alongside the design of the sports building itself, a

masterplan was developed for the revitalisation of the entire park.

Previously fragmented and lacking cohesion, the park is now unified

through a new layer of running tracks and outdoor sport courts, creating an interconnected network that integrates the complex seamlessly into its setting.

More than a sports facility, Sportcomplex De Vliet is conceived as

a connective landscape – a place where architecture, ecology, and

recreation converge.

The project demonstrates how intelligent design can strengthen the

bond between city and nature, setting a new benchmark for sustainable sports architecture in the Netherlands.

The choice of custom coloured Petrarch panels further reinforces the

desire to blend modernity with nature for a seamless finish, bordered by grass and water, architects opted for a mix of harmonious green shade.
