Self-levelling pedestals for luxury London terrace

OVERVIEW

Balance self-levelling pedestals for paving were used on a luxury development in London on the large terrace areas. The scheme used 50mm thick limestone slabs cut in rectangular shapes and paid in a brick bond pattern. The deck was built to a fall, insulated and waterproofed. The specifier was keen to ensure the finished paved terrace had a smooth upper surface without ridges between slabs. The self-levelling nature of the Wallbarn Balance pedestal meant the pedestals tilted at the head in all directions so that when the slabs were laid they found their own flat upper surface level without the need for mechanical adjustments or having the lift the slab repeatedly to get the correct placement. Balance self-levelling pedestals are particularly suitable for roof decks with areas that are irregular or have bumps and ridges, such as paving over expansion joints, laps between felt waterproofing sheets and blemishes in concrete pour. The roof membrane beneath needed to be protected from abrasion, which was ensured by the large, circular base plates of 200mm diameter which adequately dispersed the weight without point loading. Balance pedestals are very easy to fit, the height is adjusted by twisting the telescopic stems by hand. This can be done when the slab is in position, a major labour and health & safety benefit. This is an open joint system, so rainwater falls between and beneath the slabs and there is a clear cavity between slabs and roof deck to allow free drainage and ventilation. There was significant traffic and furniture on this roof terrace and the specifier was keen to ensure the pedestals could take the weight long term. Balance pedestals have a normal working weight tolerance of 683kg per pedestal and can tolerate over 1 tonne in weight each before break point. They can withstand extremes of hot and cold temperatures and because they are manufactured from virgin fibre polypropylene will not become brittle in sub zero temperatures. The contractor, Richardson Roofing, states that they consider Wallbarn Balance pedestals to best quality self-levelling pedestal on the market and using it leads them to significant labour savings and lack of waste. The terrace was completed in a very short timescale and building was handed over to the client in time to secure sales quickly and for the purchaser to enjoy their new home, with its stunning views, in time for the good weather.
