Leadenhall Building, London (TSS 41)

OVERVIEW

The iconic Leadenhall Building gains its structural robustness from the steel lattice frame, visible on the outside. The internal concrete walls do not need to act as the stiff core, but still required to form staircases and lift shafts. We were asked to provide a means of supporting large adjacent wall panels, rather than imposing loads onto steel beams. Despite being lightweight concrete, loads were significant as some panels were over 7m tall. TSS41 telescopic connectors, on edge and in the ends of the panels, transferred the loads. Invisible and fireproofed, all practical and aesthetic requirements were met.
