As part of its transport strategy, Cambridgeshire County Council identified the Huntingdon Road cycleway for improvement. The cycleway needed separating from the main carriageway, whilst still allowing cars or bicycles to easily mount or dismount the kerb and safely regain control. The Council chose a hybrid cycleway design, raised above the existing carriageway using single kerb segregation.
