In 2008, Structural Metal Decks approached the University of Southampton in order to revise the design of their trapezoidal profiles to reaffirm SMD as one of the UK’s leading providers of structural decking systems. The result was a highly successful, two year, Knowledge Transfer Partnership project sponsored by the TSB. SMD working for Severfield Reeve installed 70,000m2 of their R51 profile in what will be the tallest building in Europe, The Shard, at London Bridge. The updated profiles developed under the KTP were used on the 72nd floor, believed to be the highest composite deck in Europe.
