The Gateway, Leeds (UK)

OVERVIEW

With its distinctive facade, the Gateway is Leeds' stunning new development. The multi-award winning development consists of five individual, but interlinked buildings set around a communal landscaped space. A landmark scheme to the east of the city core, developed on a former timber yard, the shape of the site has yielded interesting building shapes.

Designed by award winning architects Carey Jones, the buildings feature a Carea cladding system to create the stunning facade, which is complemented by the large glass atrium and ample windows.

Once all three phases are completed, the scheme will provide 750,000 sq ft of development with 620 apartments; a 215 bed hotel; 50,000 sq ft of offices and 25,000 sq ft of mixed commercial space with onsite parking for 425 vehicles. The development will be a catalyst for regeneration of Leeds' eastern quarter, connecting the city with previously isolated communities.

The design, which reflects a contemporary style with emphasis on the inner environment evolved through Carey Jones' collaboration with the Council's Chief Architect, John Thorp. Its design was in response to a direct analysis of the site encompassing both the surrounding and inner environment. The exterior colour scheme was chosen to allow the integrity of the buildings shape to be maintained. In an innovative and bold design statement the reflective green Carea panelling, which complements the contemporary style of the building, was used to form a stark contrast to the standard red brick residential developments which are becoming all too common in the City Centre. The high gloss, tiled facade accentuates its contemporary curved form, attracting considerable attention for its bold architectural approach providing a focal, landmark building.

To created the desired exterior facade, carey Jones specified Carea's Acantha cladding. It was supplied in colour matched aquamarine with a gloss finish to match the building's green copper. Over 5,000m² of cladding was provided by Carea.
