The Gateway building In Sydney’s Circular Quay is Australia’s first office tower to use fully integrated touchless 3D fingerprint scanning to allow authorised office workers and guests into the building. The building’s new entrance involves a complex integration of security and technology experts, including Boon Edam, Schindler Lifts, Honeywell and IDEMIA (the manufacturers of MorphoWave fingerprint scanning technology). The solution had to work seamlessly to enhance the user experience and building security for tenants and visitors at the 46-storey landmark building in Sydney’s CBD, owned by Dexus Wholesale Property Fund. Boon Edam delivered the entrance security solution, with Lifeline Speedlane Swing speed gates that are the slimmest in the market, which added to the aesthetics, and helped with design considerations within the width of the lift lobbies. Rising Demand by Tenants for Increased Protection The upgrade project required an entrance security system that incorporated sophisticated security yet kept an aesthetically pleasing and unobtrusive lobby. The ideal solution was found by integrating Boon Edam speed gates, MorphoWave fingerprint scanners mounted on a coordinating pedestal (the Lifeline Boost), Schindler Lift destination control and Honeywell access control technology. This was a response to increasing demands by building occupants to improve the entry security measures to better cater for the protection of employees, visitors and valuable data. A Complex, yet Perfect Orchestration Gateway’s access solution includes a bank of sleek and stylish security speed gates (Boon Edam’s Lifeline Speedlane Swing), which are seamlessly integrated with touchless and intelligent elevator destination control (Schindler Port’s PORT 4 mini) and security access via a biometric fingerprint scanning (IDEMIA’s MorphoWave) – all at one point, enabling quick, accurate and seamless entry to secured areas. These technologies are all controlled by Honeywell’s access control system. Chemical termite controls were not an option because of toxicity issues, making a clean and environmentally safe physical termite barrier the correct solution.APPROACHA typical WA site, the college’s location is predominantly flat, with sandy soils and substrates. In general, this type of environment poses a high risk for termite attack common to this region of Western Australia. SOLUTIONThe main challenge with the installation came from the rammed earth exterior walls. Their natural composition can chip easily, so nailing or sealing the termite barrier onto the wall was not practical.Our solution was to install Termimesh cold joint /paver trays to the perimeter of the concrete slab edge. These protected the concealed entry point between the slab and wall. As the countdown for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games begins, the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre is emerging as the centrepiece of the newly revitalised Carrara Sports Precinct. The Centre rises from the bank of Clear Island Lake in Carrara, Queensland, resplendent in an eye-catching, sub-tropical palette of yellow and ultramarine blue. Its sprawling 16,500m2 footprint is home to over 5300 spectator seats and 15 multi-use sports courts, which will host a number of Commonwealth Games events including badminton, weightlifting, and wrestling. Designed by BVN Architecture and taking just under four years to complete, the $101 million Centre represents the best and the brightest that the Gold Coast has to offer in terms of sports training and completion facilities. Throughout the design process, BVN had to comply with standards set by the Commonwealth Games and International Sports Federations, as well as those of the local council. The resulting project embodies – and triumphs over – the challenges faced by high profile projects that need to meet high standards, and is evidence of how rewarding such projects can be when done right. It’s rare that a project so closely captures the spirit of the program for which it was designed: the Centre does this and more with flair, the bold, colourful design clearly communicating the vibrancy and high energy of the Australian sporting spirit.  To realise the soon-to-be iconic design of the Centre, BVN turned to Interpon Powder Coatings, the largest manufacturer of powder coatings worldwide. Leading Australian community bank, IMB Bank, has installed a series of Boon Edam entrances, including all glass revolving doors, slimline speedgates and a swing access gate at its new building in Wollongong, NSW.IMB moved into the new building in early 2021, and immediately sought to make the entrance open and welcoming to visitors, with entrance security inside to protect valuable data, intellectual property and people.The Boon Edam technology selected is among the most stylish and efficient of the Boon Edam range used by major banks locally, Fortune 500 companies globally, and corporate HQs in 27 countries.The exterior of the building has two Boon Edam Crystal Tourniket all-glass revolving doors, which create a striking first impression. Inside, there are three Speedlane Lifeline Swing speedgates, including one wide lane suitable for disabled access. The KEYLOCK Concealed Suspended Ceiling System, Steel Stud and Track Wall Framing System, and XPRESS Drywall Grid Ceiling System have been integrated throughout the project. Rondo’s long-term relationship with Ceiling & Wall Contractors enables the project to run smoothly and the onsite coordination is exemplary.

The entire building also featured ceilings acoustically isolated from the old structure where heavy duty isolators were required to be incorporated into the Rondo KEY-LOCK Concealed Suspension System. Similarly Rondo had to design a supplementary suspension system beneath these ceilings to accept a secondary system to support some services and particularly architectural feature ceiling beneath.

As the project was located in Hobart, it required the project team including Rondo to work together to be organised and keep a clear path of communication. This resulted in the full specification being completed early in the process, the specification included Rondo Wall Stud, KEY LOCK Ceiling Systems, DUO Ceiling Systems, External Soffit Systems and our extensive knowledge on seismic design.

Rondo provided a range of market leading wall and ceiling systems for both buildings 3 and 4. Our KEYLOCK Concealed Suspended Ceiling System and Steel Stud and Track Wall Framing System were used for the internal fit out, completed by AUSTRAL Interiors. SMTM Projects used our 1.15 BMT Stud and Track with top hats.

With a demand for leading scientific research facilities growing year upon year, the South Australian Government commissioned the development of the South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). Since the project commenced in 2010, Rondo has supplied our KEY-LOCK Suspended Ceiling System, Steel Stud and Track, DUO Exposed Grid Ceiling System, PANTHER Access Panels, Shaftwall and Walk-About Trafficable Ceiling System.

HIB will house the Centre for Cancer Biology and UniSA’s pharmacy school, with 450 researchers between them. Rondo’s involvement included providing ceiling and wall systems using our Shaftwall One-Way Erected System, KEY-LOCK Concealed Ceiling System and PANTHER Access Panels to create the desired effect.

The refurbishment of the Victoria Gardens shopping centre designed by Colab Design Studio uses Sculpform's Aluminium Click-on Batten system to create a stunning curved Oculus, along with feature walls and ceilings throughout the centre. Sculptform’s Click-on batten system provided a unique solution that could be customised to address the incredibly complex geometry of the existing architecture. Being able to use the same system for the mall cladding, mall ceiling installations and the oculus cladding ensured absolute consistency across the entire centre.

The project has called on our Technical Services Team for wall and ceiling designs, with significant quantities of Rondo systems used in the project including Rondo Stud and Track, KEY-LOCK Concealed Suspended Ceiling Systems and PANTHER Access Panels.

The $11.3 million dollar renovation of Lambton Square required Rondo product throughout including our Key-Lock Concealed Ceiling System, Steel Stud Wall framing system and various other Rondo components for the fixing of plasterboard and feature panels.

The new Student Center at Columbia College Chicago, located at 754 South Wabash Avenue in Chicago, opened its doors in the fall of 2019. This brand-new building offers five spectacular stories of spaces for students including music and film-screening rooms, dining options, a fitness centre, a reflection room for meditation and prayer, and event spaces for meetings, performances, and receptions. Columbia College Chicago has a closed campus. In order to enter any building on campus students and staff must have a Columbia ID or visitors must have a valid appointment. The main entrance at the Student Centre is the Tourniket manual revolving door that leads to a public foyer that includes a coffee shop and lounge. Since the speed gates are just past the security desk at the boundary of this area, they serve as a visual and physical indicator of where the public area terminates. Next to the Speedlane Open speed gates, which are notable because they do not have any closing barriers, guards watch as people pass through them to ensure that everyone is scanning their IDs and that the IDs are valid, in which case the speed gate shows a green light. In a situation where a red light shows and the gate alarms, the guard will check the person’s credentials and can try to troubleshoot the ID card. “The decision was really about what creates the least barrier to those entering and exiting the building,” said Dutil. “We don't really want our students to feel like they are overly policed or that our buildings are not accessible to them. So the design of the Open speed gates provided the best solution in terms of controlling access without being obtrusive." Swift Passage While Maintaining Accountability Before the Student Center was built, students entering any campus building would just show their ID to the security officer as they walked past. The administration realised that while this does provide some level of security, it is not foolproof – particularly when many people are entering at the same time for a class. The College’s head of security made the suggestion to install a system that would allow for swift passage of authorised people while maintaining accountability around who enters and exits the building. As anticipated, there was a brief learning curve for the students using the new system. “This was the first system like this on our campus,” said Dutil. “And the first few days that the new Centre was open were also the first few days of school. There were a lot of people new to the campus who required a bit of coaching from guards and our student staff in terms of where to place your card, and to not walk through before you place your card.” Coming Out Ahead of Swinging Doors Dutil confirms that the access systems placed at Boon Edam speed gates are actually outperforming those placed at swing doors across the campus for convenience and adoption. Across the campus, there is a card reader at every swing door entrance of a building where you present your card and a light turns red or green. But oftentimes the card reader is missed, or depending on the placement of the lights and placement of the guard, it can be kind of hit or miss with students walking right by it. “But with the Open speed gates, they're very visible and although they're not a total barrier to entry, they are something that's right in front of you. Because it's very noticable and not easily overlooked, the students have learned pretty quickly to get their ID out. In fact, this was meant to be a test run for the campus to ensure it would be viable and worthwhile for other buildings as well.” Advanced Features Add Value and Flexibility The speed gates have delivered additional benefits beyond basic campus security, according to Dutil. “One of the nice things about a system like this is that we can count visitors to the Student Centre because we get the data of everybody that scans in. So on a busy day for us it's about 2500 people throughout the day. That can range depending on what's going on and what time of year it is. On weekends we're very slow, since there are no classes – maybe 900 to 1200.” “We are a rental venue as well, so we have times where the building is open to non-Columbia College Chicago people for events or other functions. There's a really convenient touch panel right at the security desk called the BoonTouch, where the officer can turn off the turnstiles during those times and then attendees can move through freely without any alarms going off at all.” A New Revolving Door Adds Comfort and Peace of Mind Finally, the Tourniket manual revolving door delivers one additional benefit to the Student Centre, located in a city known for harsh weather. “Revolving doors are always preferred at a building like this that gets a lot of traffic going in and out. We have cold, drafty weather that blows right into our main space at that first floor entry. The revolving door helps to keep the building warm and saves energy and utility costs as well,” said Dutil. “Students feel safe and comfortable entering the building at night,” he concludes. “Our building has a lot of nooks and crannies, and someone can end up alone in a space. And so I think knowing that the only people that are in that building are the ones that are supposed to be there is helpful. Overall, our students appreciate the effort to try to keep them safer.”

Rondo Technical Representative Tino Cucinotta, worked closely with the 2DG team – and assisted with the supply of QUIET STUD Acoustic Wall System, Stud & Track and Finishing Sections, whilst Rondo’s newly released XPRESS Drywall Grid Ceiling System was due to arrive, ensuring the project could continue efficiently.

Rondo has supplied the external framing system for EIFS façade system in the Al Zeina development. Al Zeina is the strategic gateway to the new Al Raha Beach Development where the natural beauty of Abu Dhabi is captured by the creation of a collection of formal Arabic gardens, courts and plazas in the tradition of gardens of the world.

The Rondo Technical Services Department worked closely with CSR Gyprock to come up with a suitable External Wall system. The project consists of over 30,000 lineal metres of 92 1.15bmt lipped studs used for the external wall system and over 45,000 lineal metres of 64mm 0.50bmt lipped studs for the internal walls.

45 Clarence St, is a striking office tower located in the busy western corridor of Sydney’s commercial district, with extensive views of Darling Harbour and Barangaroo, it is a prestigious building with various companies operating inside this office building, such as Business Sydney and CBRE.As part of the refurbishment, which included the lobby upgrade, CS worked extensively with the property management team, architect, builder, and installer to deliver the architectural grilles for this project. There was a unique vision to use the Econoline indoors in a commercial building instead of using it as an outdoor vision barrier grille. The focus of this refurbishment was to provide a bespoke architectural grille to line the ceiling and vertical walls of the lobby and modernise the building.The Econoline is typically used in locations such as parking garages, concealing mechanical equipment and for many refacing applications. Having the Econoline installed in a commercial building is a unique opportunity that will result in more products being used for aesthetic purposes. The challenge that was faced with the Econoline being used indoors was that the tapered vertical walls on two sides as grilles needed to be a certain distance above ground level and to be structurally sound.On completion, the lobby at 45 Clarence St Sydney is unique from your typical office building. This is also exciting for CS, to be part of a project that has been transformative and elegant in design.

Rondo worked with Forman Commercial Interiors and Alpha Holdings on the three storey, $40 million project by providing all of the Steel Stud and Track requirements along with the KEY-LOCK Concealed Suspended Ceiling System. Due to the various wall systems designed, Rondo supplied diagrammatic specifications for the junction details to assist in completing the project, which finished in August this year.

The school required car parking and a sealed one at that. But, in the proposed car park was a huge old tree. The tree could be cut down and the roots dug out or the tree couldbe left, with open soil above the root system to allow for infiltration to keep the tree healthy; but this would lose atleast six car spaces. What was to be done?The answer turned out to be simple – keep the tree, but surround the tree with Atlantis® Gravel Cell™ 52mm cells.Hence while the rest of the car park was sealed, the areaaround the tree was prepared and the 52mm cells werelaid and clipped together there and filled with 10mmgravel. This area was of sufficient size to provide 3 carplaces on each side of the tree and a driveway in frontof the tree, while at the same time allowing rainfall toinfiltrate through the gravel into the root system.Thus we had a win-win situation. Not only was the treesaved, and money saved on not having to remove it, butthe root system of the tree was protected by the GravelCell™ system, and six extra car spaces were created.

The hotel and casino will include a luxury hotel, gaming areas, dining, and retail and convention facilities along with numerous special attractions. Rondo provided this project with all the Drywall Steel Stud Partition Systems for the podium, gaming areas and the hotel tower. Included in the plan were also specially designed and supplied maintenance WALK–ABOUT Trafficable Ceiling Systems as per the project requirements.

Rondo’s Seismic products within each system included DUO Perimeter Trim Sliding Clip (Rondo 850), KEY-LOCK TCR Seismic Joiner (Rondo 865) and Seismic plenum braces. With the KEY-LOCK Seismic Concealed Ceiling System, two-side fixed, free wall perimeter connections and Rondo 141 Wall Track (1.15BMT to suit 129 Furring Channel) was used.

Due to tight plenum space and extremely congested plenum areas, Rondo’s new Xpress Drywall Grid System was the ideal ceiling system to use. This maximised the ceiling heights in all guest rooms while offering compliant plenum vertical clearances. Contractors implemented Rondo’s intricate feature ceilings and bulkheads throughout the entire building, such areas included the lobby, restaurants and conference areas.

When deciding on bicycle parking solutions for the Ovo project, Cora Bike Rack presented its range of innovative product designs that could tailored for this special project. In order to provide maximum capacity and accessibility, Cora’s E3DT-GT double tier system, E3VR vertical wall mount system and CBR bike parking rails were combined to offer the ultimate AS2890.3 compliant EOT facility.

A Tricell system was designed by SAS International to fit the "Y" shaped departure lounge at Santiago Airport. SAS International has designed, manufactured and installed metal ceiling solutions for both interior and exterior areas of the new 74,000m² terminal of the Aeropuerto de Santiago, Spain. SAS810 tricell has been installed to create a triangular aesthetic in the departure lounges. This open cell system provides a geometric form that can easily be repeated for a striking finish. The flexible approach in SAS International’s design process enabled this unique solution to fit within the ‘Y’ shaped designed departure lounge. Installed in the main terminal and baggage hall, as well as exterior ceiling areas, is the linear profile system SAS710. The linear slat ceiling, designed so that each slat lines up neatly with the next, forms a perfect row resulting in clean and simple architectural lines. SAS710 was also chosen for the exterior of the building to provide continuity of design. Using specially designed slat retaining angles, the system has been adapted for strength and durability to prevent slats from being dislodged in high wind.

Hospitality and security are often at odds with each other. The challenge is to find the best compromise between Fort Knox and a warm welcome. Telecom company Liberty Global recently carried out a major renovation of their head office in Schiphol-Rijk – the Netherlands. As part of the project, the access security was considerably tightened, without affecting their brand’s desired welcoming appearance. Liberty Global is an international telecommunication and television company. It is also one of the largest internet service providers outside the USA. Liberty Global operates in 14 countries and has 35,000 employees. The head office is based in London and additionally there are central offices in Amsterdam and Denver. The Sir Edward Weary Dunlop Retirement Village has been completed with the help of architect, builder and contractor Ryman Healthcare. The 134-unit age care facility will house serviced care units and independent living units for the elderly with resort-style facilities. Rondo assisted in the development of this project, supplying a number of products including Stud and Track (64mm and 92mm x 0.55BMT), KEY-LOCK Suspended Ceiling Systems and MAXIjamb Systems for the large window and door openings leading onto balconies.
