The Farr Institute in Edinburgh is a collaboration between six Scottish Universities and the NHS National Services Scotland. They aim to place the country as a global leader in health informatics research whilst improving the health of the Scottish population. 30,000 sq. ft. has been fitted out to accommodate Bio Incubator laboratories and offices together with meeting, conference and dining facilities. The remainder of the building will accommodate laboratories and offices for life science research. SAS International’s acoustic baffles were specified to meet acoustic demand and make the most of the high ceilings and breathable space. The colours, baffle layout and service integration were carefully co-ordinated to the brief. SAS130 and SAS330 were specified and installed in the central core. Both systems offer quick and easy access to otherwise hidden mechanical and electrical systems. With SAS130, tiles can be lifted out to gain access to the ceiling void. SAS330’s hinge notch allows tiles to be hung vertically from C-Profiles, providing unobstructed access to the ceiling void. Ray Kwiecinski at Michael Laird Architects gave the below quote on working with SAS International; “MLA has specified a variety of SAS International’s lay-in grid ceiling systems over the years and we have always been extremely satisfied with the finished product. At the Farr Institute however, we decided to create a feature of the structural soffits and the M&E services and, by careful coordination of these services, the steel beams… [With] the SAS Baffle System and SAS Raft System 600, we were able to create an open, collaborative and exciting office environment whilst maintaining a high degree of sound absorbency. The hotel and casino will include a luxury hotel, gaming areas, dining, and retail and convention facilities along with numerous special attractions. Rondo provided this project with all the Drywall Steel Stud Partition Systems for the podium, gaming areas and the hotel tower. Included in the plan were also specially designed and supplied maintenance WALK–ABOUT Trafficable Ceiling Systems as per the project requirements.

Due to tight plenum space and extremely congested plenum areas, Rondo’s new Xpress Drywall Grid System was the ideal ceiling system to use. This maximised the ceiling heights in all guest rooms while offering compliant plenum vertical clearances. Contractors implemented Rondo’s intricate feature ceilings and bulkheads throughout the entire building, such areas included the lobby, restaurants and conference areas.

The Rondo Technical Services Department worked closely with CSR Gyprock to come up with a suitable External Wall system. The project consists of over 30,000 lineal metres of 92 1.15bmt lipped studs used for the external wall system and over 45,000 lineal metres of 64mm 0.50bmt lipped studs for the internal walls.

Rondo worked with Forman Commercial Interiors and Alpha Holdings on the three storey, $40 million project by providing all of the Steel Stud and Track requirements along with the KEY-LOCK Concealed Suspended Ceiling System. Due to the various wall systems designed, Rondo supplied diagrammatic specifications for the junction details to assist in completing the project, which finished in August this year.

Rondo has supplied 80,000l/m of DUO Exposed Grid Ceiling System and 148,000 L/M of Steel Stud Drywall Framing System to three of the main buildings. As the design required a variety of special length products, Rondo has been producing large quantities of these items in advance and storing them at the Rondo warehouse in WA to enable quick supply and install for contractors on site, which ensures the project can progress at a rapid rate.

With a demand for leading scientific research facilities growing year upon year, the South Australian Government commissioned the development of the South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). The Berkeley Hotel is a luxurious and iconic hotel, housed in the fashionable district of Knightsbridge, London. When renovations were required, Roger Stirk Harbour & Partners designed a glass façade entrance to the hotel. Boon Edam Ltd was consulted to provide a stylish entry solution to complement the updated lobby entrance and reflect the luxurious image of the Berkeley Hotel brand. Business Challenges The hotel entrance required a renovation which would give guests an instant welcome upon arrival, whilst also providing a practical function to meet access needs. For a hotel as prestigious as The Berkeley, first impressions are hugely important. The entrance and welcome given by a hotel provides the guest with an indication of what to expect from their stay, so therefore the entry solution was a key consideration within the renovation project. With a constant flow of visitors in and out of the lobby, the entrance door is vital in maintaining a comfortable climate and pleasant atmosphere for guests. As sliding or swinging doors bring in cold draughts, the specification called for a revolving door to keep out wind, noise and dust. The project architect specified that the door was to be fully automatic and made entirely of glass to match the newly renovated lobby. However, for a door to be fully automatic, there must be several sensors and buffers which would have impacted the all-glass aesthetic of the entrance. Boon Edam was appointed to provide a tailored solution which could meet all the specific functional requirements, without needing to compromise on the luxurious style and quality desired. The Boon Edam Solution A Custom Designed Crystal Tourniket Due to the high-end nature of The Berkeley Hotel, attention to detail was paramount. Multiple meetings were held with the architect to ensure that Boon Edam’s team of experts could fully capture all requirements to provide the perfect, bespoke solution. Boon Edam’s Crystal Tourniket door was selected for the entrance of The Berkley Hotel; one of the most impressive and eye-catching revolving doors available. A Crystal Tourniket is constructed almost entirely from glass, with added stainless steel accents to support the solidity of the door. The End Result The Berkeley Hotel is now home to a grand lobby entrance provided by Boon Edam, which utilises natural wood in the drum wall of the Crystal Tourniket revolving door to provide guests with a warm and elegant welcome. In combination with the all-glass door set and modern lighting, the bespoke solution truly reflects the prestigious Berkley Hotel brand.

When deciding on bicycle parking solutions for the Ovo project, Cora Bike Rack presented its range of innovative product designs that could tailored for this special project. In order to provide maximum capacity and accessibility, Cora’s E3DT-GT double tier system, E3VR vertical wall mount system and CBR bike parking rails were combined to offer the ultimate AS2890.3 compliant EOT facility.

About the ProjectThis Child Health and Learning facility in Manly, deliversspecialist child healthcare for up to 15,000 families a yearfrom rural, regional and remote New South Wales andbeyond.The new facility will integrate a state-of-the-art child schooland health service that will accommodate regional childrenand families nationwide.This six storey building includes school classrooms,consultant and observation rooms, a paediatric oral healthunit with a dental and orthodontics room, ophthalmology,occupational therapy, sensory rooms and a telecare centre.ChallengeOver 80% of construction litigation and defect claims are a result of water ingress, of that 80%, almost 30% of those are below grade issues. (City Futures Research Centre UNSW).The two biggest waterproofing challenges for this build were:1) Below Grade - Non structural Blinding Slab, 4 metres below sea level and less then 50 metres from Manly Beach. This build had decanters pumping over 1.3 million litres of water per day awayfrom the site during the construction phase.2) The creation of a waterproofing solution which would not fail if the membrane was penetrated, be it in the pre or post construction phase.Due to the proximity to the beach and the build having a raft slab in the basement, a standard cookie cutter below-grade waterproofing solution was not an option for this build.Tremco SolutionTremco were asked to provide a solution for this complex build. The biggest and most demanding waterproofing areas within the build that needed attention were:1) Below Grade - 50 metres from the ocean and 4 metres below sea level, we needed a reliable waterproofing solution, that would also be robust enough to withstand any punishment tradesdelivered post installation, we recommended and used Paraseal SW (Saltwater). Paraseal SW is a multi-layer sheet membrane waterproofing system consisting of a self-sealing, expandable layer of bentonite laminated to an impermeable, high density polyethylene (HDPE).2) iAuditor reporting- iAuditor is an onsite quality assurance program Tremco conduct for the builder and applicator to ensure our products are being installed correctly and to specification. This gives the builder the confidence that there will be no waterproofing defects within the build.Overall, both the builder and developer were happy with the end result, which provided the warranty and quality required of such a development.

MP Group were charged with managing the installation and finishing of all internal and external walls and this is also where Rondo offered our support. With the external structural steel framing having been installed 150mm out of position, Rondo’s Technical Services Team came to the rescue and designed an external stud wall system using our MAXIframe External Wall Framing System to ‘fill the gap,’ including design of special header bracing details to support the wall.

Rondo has supplied the external framing system for EIFS façade system in the Al Zeina development. Al Zeina is the strategic gateway to the new Al Raha Beach Development where the natural beauty of Abu Dhabi is captured by the creation of a collection of formal Arabic gardens, courts and plazas in the tradition of gardens of the world.

Rondo’s Seismic products within each system included DUO Perimeter Trim Sliding Clip (Rondo 850), KEY-LOCK TCR Seismic Joiner (Rondo 865) and Seismic plenum braces. With the KEY-LOCK Seismic Concealed Ceiling System, two-side fixed, free wall perimeter connections and Rondo 141 Wall Track (1.15BMT to suit 129 Furring Channel) was used.
