Leading Australian community bank, IMB Bank, has installed a series of Boon Edam entrances, including all glass revolving doors, slimline speedgates and a swing access gate at its new building in Wollongong, NSW.IMB moved into the new building in early 2021, and immediately sought to make the entrance open and welcoming to visitors, with entrance security inside to protect valuable data, intellectual property and people.The Boon Edam technology selected is among the most stylish and efficient of the Boon Edam range used by major banks locally, Fortune 500 companies globally, and corporate HQs in 27 countries.The exterior of the building has two Boon Edam Crystal Tourniket all-glass revolving doors, which create a striking first impression. Inside, there are three Speedlane Lifeline Swing speedgates, including one wide lane suitable for disabled access. In one section, there is also a Winglock Swing access gate that separates off a designated meeting space.“After reviewing a range of product proposals, we found that Boon Edam’s range had the ideal combination of aesthetics and security that IMB was seeking,” said IMB Head of Facilities, Greg Dowd.“The security speedgates give us greater control over access to the building, and they alert us to any tailgating or access breaches. Limiting access to only authorised personnel not only protects our staff, but it also protects the data of our customers, which we always store securely,” he said.“As a further advantage, the Boon Edam team integrated the access control system with our RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) system. Rondo has worked alongside Lend Lease to build a stadium that will benefit Western Sydney’s sporting culture immensely. The stadium required continuous onsite reviews including the change of design by our technical team. Rondo’s Steel Stud and Track Wall Framing system was used for the external walls in addition to our Top Hats and Top Hat cleats.

As the project was located in Hobart, it required the project team including Rondo to work together to be organised and keep a clear path of communication. This resulted in the full specification being completed early in the process, the specification included Rondo Wall Stud, KEY LOCK Ceiling Systems, DUO Ceiling Systems, External Soffit Systems and our extensive knowledge on seismic design.

After nearly 100 years of serving the local community, the Petersham RSL club moved to a new home this year, in a redevelopment centred on style and comfort. Part of the design brief for the architects and developers was that the indoor spaces were comfortable for guests, particularly in reception, which can often feel the effects of wind and debris entering through open doors. The developers chose a fully automatic Tourniket revolving door from Boon Edam Australia to make a grand first impression to the classy new club, which was recently opened by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. It is the same type of cost-effective entrance used by leading hospitality venues globally to protect patrons and workers against wind, weather, and pollution, while also controlling traffic flow and opening up new sheltered areas for productive amenities. Petersham RSL CEO, Danny Fitzgerald, said “The Boon Edam revolving door creates an impressive entrance to our modern club, and was the perfect fit for our redevelopment. With this door, Boon Edam met two key specification requirements – enhancing climate control inside the club, and enhancing personal comfort in the reception area.” A welcoming entrance The 3-wing Tourniket revolving door pictured has a height of 2,650mm and diameter of 2,800mm to allow ample room for entry and egress. Rondo has supplied an external soffit ceiling frame for the Dubai Metro Station project. The Green Line of the Dubai Metro is the second Dubai Metro light rail line in Dubai. The route starts in Al Ghusais, and runs along Al Nahda Rd and Salahuddin Rd above ground. The Green line runs through Deira and Bur Dubai and generally runs parallel to Dubai Creek.

Working closely with SA Master Plaster as the internal drywall contractor Rondo has supplied 64 & 92mm x 0.70BMT and 92mm x 1.15BMT wall studs for the internal wall framing with over 1,000 studs being required per floor. Also the project is utilising Rondo KEY-LOCK concealed plasterboard framing for ceilings and over 2,000m2 of the external Rondo MAXIframe wall system.

Designed by SAOTA in association with TKD Architects, Double Bay House overlooks Sydney’s world famous harbour and uses both Click-on Battens and Tongue & Groove Cladding to create amazing timber features. The incredible batten ceiling spanning the internal to external spaces, creates a seamless series of intersecting planes. Tongue & Groove Cladding is used to create linear textures with a natural look throughout.

Rondo provided Red Oak Contracts Pty Ltd with the external wall, soffit and bulkhead designs which were submitted to BADGE and Hames Sharley Architects for approval. Rondo’s technical team highlight the quality of workmanship on this project, especially when comparing the designs to the finished installation. The stock was supplied on time and accurate with Rondo working with all parties throughout this project which is a credit to all involved.

Renowned Melbourne architecture firm Denton Corker Marshall was responsible for designing the bridge’s striking appearance. ‘The design respects the site’s cultural heritage and environmental values, providing the physical and mental space to pause and reflect,’ says Neil Bourne, Director at Denton Corker Marshall. The elegantly twisting bridge connects both sides of Hobart’s broad entrance highway in a distinctive entry portal. This much-anticipated civic project’s major design feature is 180 metres of Capral aluminium sheeting, skirting the bridge.

When the owners of this bungalow, built around a hundred years ago, approached Ian Moore Architects they were looking for a larger living space as well as better bedrooms for their children. Ian's approach was spread across three main areas: refresh the old, remove the existing extension and park a new rectangular, two storey box. The outcome showcases two distinct external elements which have a seamless internal connection with no separation.

The Gateway building In Sydney’s Circular Quay is Australia’s first office tower to use fully integrated touchless 3D fingerprint scanning to allow authorised office workers and guests into the building. The building’s new entrance involves a complex integration of security and technology experts, including Boon Edam, Schindler Lifts, Honeywell and IDEMIA (the manufacturers of MorphoWave fingerprint scanning technology). The solution had to work seamlessly to enhance the user experience and building security for tenants and visitors at the 46-storey landmark building in Sydney’s CBD, owned by Dexus Wholesale Property Fund. Boon Edam delivered the entrance security solution, with Lifeline Speedlane Swing speed gates that are the slimmest in the market, which added to the aesthetics, and helped with design considerations within the width of the lift lobbies. London is a vibrant, busy and beautiful city, boasting constant innovation and unique architecture. Now, developments have become bigger and more competitive year on year. With expectations on office workspaces becoming increasingly more open and flexible, the requirement for integratable security has become a complex task. This led to the existing building of 10 Queen Street Place, Riverscape to have a much-needed refurbishment following the trend of open atriums, flexible floor space and usable rooftop space. Within this project, the interior and exterior were dramatically changed and enhanced utilising fresh entry and access control security solutions. Located next to Southwark Bridge and a couple minutes’ walk from the bustling area of Cannon Street Station is Riverscape. Originally opened back in 1980, the multi-storey office space was a modern development that sat on the sought-after area of the River Thames. This project was refurbed from top to bottom, with the original Boon Edam entrance solutions being upgraded to newer more innovative products. The lead architect was Aukett Swanke with interior designers Barr Gazetas leading the design of the refurbishment and, main contractors being Overbury. Working for this project years prior in relation to the old security lanes and revolving doors that were installed by Boon Edam, the London Sales team knew the building and requirements needed. It’s common to see dated installations be retrofitted with newer security products that modernise the look and feel of an entrance as well as upgrade the technology associated with them. Two high-end department stores Rokin 21 and Rokin 49 are rented by the Canadian Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), making this their Dutch headquarters. Both buildings have a new façade, which has been designed to blend in with their historic location. Authenticity is achieved with 3D curved aluminum façades and curtain walls housing enormous windows. The storefront display windows on the ground floor are 4.5 by 3 meters. A collaboration between Boon Edam and Stackdoor has resulted in an impressively tall entrance through a glass Tourniket original revolving door with a height of 4.3 meters.

Located in Fortitude Valley in the heart of Brisbane. Builder, Multiplex began Stage 1 of this $200m project in May 2015 and completed it in July this year. Subcontractor, Precision Interior Walls & Ceilings enlisted Rondo’s expertise in designing the internal ceilings and partitions, external walls and soffit framing. Designed by Architect’s Elenberg Fraser, Stage 1 of the development consisted of 32 levels with 910 luxury apartments sprawled across two towers. This will eventually form part of three residential towers incorporating ground floor retail areas, cafés, restaurants and over 1000 apartments in total.

The ABC project in Melbourne’s Southbank precinct represents a bold union of the national broadcaster’s multiple aims and responsibilities. With its bold style, internal and external openness and highly innovative use of technology, the ABC’s Victorian headquarters embodies socially responsible design. The central design theme of transparency is perfectly suited to the Capral curtain wall, window and door systems throughout. The building, which designer Cox Architecture characterise as fostering a ‘dynamic, integrated and visually transparent environment which promotes interaction across program teams’, also invites ‘greater public interest and participation’.

Expoconti and Rondo, along with the project architects, Lysons Architects and builder, Brookfield Multiplex, combined their expertise to ensure the design and construction of the RMIT Swanston Academic Building (SAB) offers a higher quality and innovative learning experience for students. To achieve this, the newly launched Rondo MAXIframe External Wall Framing System was specified, with Rondo MAXIjamb designed for installation around door jambs and internal window openings. This meant Expoconti could save time on site as MAXIjamb replaces the necessity for multiple stud configurations, as well as offering greater performance capacities than traditional wall stud framing.

The legendary Peninsula Hotel in the heart of Paris was undergoing a large renovation project and the project’s architect, who specialised in the restoration of exceptional establishments, decided on three Boon Edam Crystal Tourniket revolving doors and one Circleslide to fit their brief of installing a transparent and luxurious entrance. Built in 1908 to host the palace “Hotel Majestic”, this palace hotel was due for of an extensive renovation to offer modern facilities, standards and technology while still preserving its historic roots. The restoration took 4 years to complete and the end result is a five-star contemporary hotel which maintains and respects the spirit of the original institution. The project involved working with the finest artisans with an ancestral knowledge of this landmark building. Ferrero’s new global HQ gathers in one building with nearly 1,300 people, previously spread over five different offices. The building, with a total floor space of almost 30,000 m², opened in December 2019. The building is designed to evoke the atmosphere of an Italian square: a vast atrium is surrounded by two multi-storey office wings. Boon Edam was appointed to craft and install the golden revolving door, on behalf of facade builder Groven + Portal, who in turn worked for general contractor Felix Giorgetti. The colour of the revolving door makes a visual reference to the world-famous golden chocolate - Ferrero Rocher. The Casa Ferrero administrative building consists of two blocks built on a common basement. It was the combination of these plots, and the architectural skills, that resulted in what you see today: a building that is both impressive and elegant as well as being a pleasant and functional workplace for the employees of the food group. Ferrero’s colours are subtly incorporated into the classic facades, with bronze tones and a gilded effect over the windows as well as the entrance glass panels. This effect was achieved by applying a gold-coloured textile fabric to the laminated glass during the project’s construction. Behind the glass facade of the entrance, the most jaw-dropping area of Ferrero’s headquarters unfolds - a central atrium that connects the two blocks and is entirely covered by a glass roof. The spacious atrium is designed to function as a reception and meeting space. Horizontal circulation between the two blocks is facilitated by connecting walkways with a range of 20 meters. The vertical circulation occurs through panoramic glass elevators. The central atrium’s glass-roofed space is open to life within the company and encourages interaction between employees. This 11-storey building, including six upper levels (ground floor + 5 floors) and five lower levels, adapts perfectly to its urban surroundings. The office areas are spread over nine floors, taking advantage of maximum light for the interior space. Levels -3 to -5 include technical areas and parking spaces. Ferrero’s wish was for a functional and pleasant building for everyone who works there. We think they have achieved this in spades!

A significant Melbourne landmark, Victoria’s Shrine of Remembrance has undergone a major redevelopment by local firm ARM Architecture. Completed in late 2014, the redesign accommodates new requirements of the memorial that have evolved in recent years, while respecting the original design by Hudson and Wardrop, thus ensuring the memorial’s use by future generations.  Built between 1928 and 1934 to honour those who served in the First World War, the Shrine was inspired by the tomb of King Mausolus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. In the late 1990s, the Shrine of Remembrance Trustees embarked on a bold plan for the site. Access to the upper levels of the Shrine was problematic, especially for veteran visitors, and public visitation was increasing as younger generations came to understand the legacy of their forebears. Accordingly, the Shrine’s collections were expanding with donations of artefacts from families and a growing need for education facilities and an improved visitor experience became evident.  In 2001, ARM Architecture were commissioned to develop a master plan to develop the Shrine. Following the original 1920s design, ARM proposed four symmetrical zig-zag shaped courtyards, allowing access to the undercroft spaces under the existing structure which now house gallery areas, an auditorium, dedicated education rooms, an archive and offices. Stage 1 of the project saw the Visitor Centre and two of the courtyards completed on the north side of the structure in 2003. Stage 2 expanded the undercroft with the addition of the Education Centre and Galleries of Remembrance, and the final two courtyards. ARM Design Architect Jeremy Stewart explains “It was important that each of the courtyards had a distinct feel”. The open air Student Entry Courtyard offers a separate entrance to the Shrine for school groups, with a large sculptural poppy, the flower of wartime remembrance, suspended overhead. With the colour red notorious for fading on external structures, Interpon Powder Coatings recommended a system that would be colourfast. In a high traffic space that closes for only two days each year, with the additional solemnity of the memorial environment, choosing a product that would last the distance and require minimal maintenance was essential to this project. Interpon’s D2015 Gold Global Warranty offers the Shrine Trustees this assurance. Working with Locker Group, HDM Metal, an experienced fabricator and Interpon Approved Applicators AAF Vic and Powdercoating Services ACT as exclusive warrantors provided further reassurance of the product quality.  The giant overheard poppy features Interpon D2015 Ultriva™ R15 Crimson Matt YG215A and its support structure Interpon D2015 Ultriva™ Ebony YN201A. On the south west diagonal, the Terrace Courtyard features a lush green referencing South East Asian inspired garden. Amidst the greenery, laser cut aluminium panels coated in Interpon D2015 Ultriva™ R14 Waratah Matt YG222A list the names of Victorian towns, providing a reference point for visitors. The zig-zag shape of the terrace courtyards infer irregular exposure to the sun, further emphasising the need for a product of premium quality. “Interpon are interested in and open to ideas”, says Stewart, making this a win-win collaboration for the architects of this redevelopment of Victoria’s premier place of remembrance.  

Imagine waking up in this 4-star luxury hotel with panoramic view of the IJ and the city of Amsterdam. Hotel Jakarta: a BREEAM Excellent certified energy-neutral hotel in Amsterdam. Designed with sustainability in mind. Unique for the Netherlands is the 30-meter-high timber structure of the hotel. All columns, ceilings and frames are made from natural, FSC or PEFC certified wood. The south and east façades are covered with 700 m2 of building-integrated solar energy panels (BIPV panels). The glass roof that covers the atrium also contains BIPV cells that, in addition to collecting energy, also function as sun blinds for the subtropical inner garden. The atrium is the center of the hotel and works as a temperature controller in both summer and winter. On each side of the building, rooms have their own covered outdoor space that functions as a structural awning. A custom made revolving door provides access to the hotel where there is a dynamic public area with various bars, restaurants, coffee corners and a wellness center. This transparent revolving door is almost 6 meters high and fits perfectly with the appearance of the facade. In addition, this type of entrance solution is in line with the sustainability requirements of the building.

Known as being positioned within one of the most popular positions within London, The River Building sits comfortably between London Bridge, St Paul’s, and Bank. The position offers enviable commutes for the city workforce, boasting a five minutes’ walk from six key tube stations. Renovated to utilise a once void entrance, The River Building is now a self-contained office space with a contemporary industrial design. The large atrium features a set of sleek black Lifeline Speedlane Swings. Stiff + Trevillion working with Blackstone Group, had specified early into the design process for the Lifeline Speedlane Swing, due to its existing specification in existing projects. The new two-story building boasts a spacious atrium that combines naked brick walling with warm feature lighting and dark tones. Mimicking the interior styling a bank of Lifeline Speedlane Swings were to be finished in black RAL. The River Building with an occupancy density of 1:8 requested comfortable yet stylish entry resulting in a wider lane width configuration. The 615mm passage width utilises two glass wings that offer fast access but give the illusion of openness.

Termi Home & Commercial (SA) were proud to be a part of the historic Norwood Oval Redevelopment project in Adelaide, South Australia. As one of the most iconic football grounds in Adelaide only a non chemical termite management solution would do. Hospitality and security are often at odds with each other. The challenge is to find the best compromise between Fort Knox and a warm welcome. Telecom company Liberty Global recently carried out a major renovation of their head office in Schiphol-Rijk – the Netherlands. As part of the project, the access security was considerably tightened, without affecting their brand’s desired welcoming appearance. Liberty Global is an international telecommunication and television company. It is also one of the largest internet service providers outside the USA. Liberty Global operates in 14 countries and has 35,000 employees. The head office is based in London and additionally there are central offices in Amsterdam and Denver. Consumer brands that belong to Liberty Global include VodafoneZiggo (50% Joint Venture with Vodafone), Virgin Media, UPC, Unitymedia and Telenet. In the high-quality business park - Schiphol-Rijk, Liberty Global have seven office buildings, which, collectively, employ a total of around 1600 people of 55 nationalities. "We did have manned security at the main entrance, but that solution did not always prevent people from entering our central hall unnoticed," says Simon Kuitert, who holds the position of Corporate Security Manager at Liberty Global. "That is why we introduced a single point of entry for the recent renovation."

The first stage of a two hectare urban regeneration development in Docklands opened in 2018 and introduced the city of Melbourne’s first elevated public park. Floating 10 metres above open public space, a spectacular Tongue & Groove Cladding Soffit overhangs 90 metres, providing natural warmth and texture and remaining consistent with the design of the project. Installed by our partner installer Casello, the project is an example of how our expert installers can complete a project on time and on budget. Green space in the CBD Biophilic design principles were a key to the design of One Melbourne Quarter, bringing the warmth and beauty of natural materials to the workplace. The most prominent inclusion is the spectacular Skypark, located directly above the entrance of the building, on the second floor. The Skypark is a perfect ‘suspended oasis’, bringing the uniquely relaxing aspects of a local park to the inner city. A statement through a soffit With the Skypark suspended above street level, the underside presented a perfect opportunity for the architects Denton Corker Marshall to create a unique feature which was consistent with the design ambitions of the project. Behind the look Sculptform Tongue & Groove Cladding provided a beautiful natural aesthetic in spotted gum. The combination of visual features and colour variation contrasts the greys of the Melbourne CBD and contributes to the overall identity of the project. PEFC certified timber was required to meet Green Star Rating, which was then sourced by Sculptform.

The City of Boston is known for many things – from Fenway Park to the Boston Marathon to the bar from Cheers, the city is full of iconic landmarks, events, cultural assets, education centers, and more. The City is also recognised for its vast history, especially downtown, where hundred-year-old buildings have been preserved or restored. There is also a mixture of new property development, including 33 Congress Street, in the heart of the financial district, which combines the best of historical design with new construction. 33 Congress incorporates more than 400,000 square feet of office and retail space, transforming the historic neighborhood and positioning the area as a dynamic downtown destination. The project was designed by Arrowstreet, an award-winning architecture and design firm, and was led by Jason King, AIA, LEED, AP, BD+C, Senior Associate for Arrowstreet. Blending Historical Features with a Modern Design According to King, the 33 Congress Street building consisted of three different structures that were built at separate times: in 1904, 1906, and in 1922 and then all combined into one space. While the space functioned as one building, there were three separate elevator cores, sets of restrooms, sets of stairs, and more. Those entities needed to be reconfigured into one. The most striking feature of 33 Congress is a new, modern glass and steel structure, containing 6 additional floors of office space that sits on top of the original three masonry buildings. Another important project goal was to upgrade the main lobby to a modern design that allowed public access, increased security for building employees, and respected several historical aspects. “We needed a way to get people into the new, main elevator lobby quickly due to the high volume of traffic that we were anticipating would take place after the redesign,” King said. “We also wanted to create an entrance that would create a better flow of entry from the sidewalk into the building.” The original building had an existing revolving door, but it was small and surrounded by stone. “It was dark and uninviting,” King said. “We were creating an open and airy Class A lobby space and wanted visitors to clearly see the ornate, coffered ceiling and experience the grand and historic nature of the lobby as they entered.” Revolving Door and Speed Gates Provide Aesthetics and Function King implemented a Boon Edam Crystal Tourniket manual revolving door to lead visitors in the double height lobby space. The Crystal Tournket is constructed virtually completely from glass with only a few stainless steel accents to ensure the solidity of the revolving door. It fits seamlessly with modern glass facades but can also be a beautiful eye catcher in more traditional or classic designs. For employee access, the building’s previous design did not incorporate turnstiles to the elevator banks. “The building did have card reader access, but only at certain doors and locations,” King said. King installed four lanes of Boon Edam Lifeline Speedlane Swing speed gates and two Winglock Swing model access gates to provide secure employee access to the building’s upper floors. The Lifeline Speedlane Swing speed gate manages and channels the flow of people entering and moving around buildings. It employs sensors that detect visitors approaching, with pulsing light strips to guide the user. A sleep function saves on energy use. It can be customised with dimensional and glass choices, including corporate identity colors or other options, so that it either blends-in or stands-out from its surroundings. The Boon Edam Winglock Swing is constructed from stainless steel and a single glass panel, and is unobtrusive in nature and design. The access gate easily manages bi-directional traffic, with LED lights that signal if the gate is in use or on standby. The access gate ties into a manned security desk located near the front doors. Employees gain access to the building through either the Lifeline turnstiles, or a Winglock Swing access gate, while building visitors can receive credentials at the security desk. King said, “We started the process looking at Boon Edam from a security and an aesthetic standpoint. We went through multiple product options but always had a Boon Edam product as the basis of the design. We have been happy with Boon Edam entrance solutions and we are planning to use them again for future projects.”

Canberra Hospital is also a hub for education and research, remaining as the main teaching hospital for the Australian National University Medical School and the University of Canberra’s Nursing School. Canberra Hospital additionally accommodates for Clinical Pastoral Care institutions based in Sydney. RBA was thrilled to participate on a project that could better the experiences of both a myriad of patients and students.Canberra Hospital reached out to RBA to provide for a number of brand new Bariatric Rooms and one “Super Bariatric Room” during a refurbishment of the hospital’s orthopaedics services. These amenities are essential to providing comfortable care for individuals struggling with the growing obesity crisis, the Super Bariatric Room catering to people weighing up to half a tonne. As a result, RBA had to supply high quality, heavy duty bariatric facilities, whilst keeping a homely character to make patients comfortable in the clinical environment. Read the news article from the Canberra Times RBA’s supplication of our Bariatric Toilet, or the RBA8851-137, pictured below was vital for the project. Made of Stainless Steel, the toilet can withstand loads of up to 910 kg with no measurable deflection and 2200 kg with no permanent damage, maintaining strong and secure for its intended usage. Furthermore, the 304-type, or “Food Grade” Stainless Steel is constructed with corrosion resistance and allows for optimal hygiene. The unit supplied to Canberra Hospital has an optional P or S Trap, coming in an Enviro-Glaze® White Finish, best suited for the setting. However, this unit is also offered Enviro-Glaze® White external finish and a Stainless Steel internal finish, or a Stainless Steel total finish. The new Student Center at Columbia College Chicago, located at 754 South Wabash Avenue in Chicago, opened its doors in the fall of 2019. This brand-new building offers five spectacular stories of spaces for students including music and film-screening rooms, dining options, a fitness centre, a reflection room for meditation and prayer, and event spaces for meetings, performances, and receptions. Columbia College Chicago has a closed campus. In order to enter any building on campus students and staff must have a Columbia ID or visitors must have a valid appointment. The main entrance at the Student Centre is the Tourniket manual revolving door that leads to a public foyer that includes a coffee shop and lounge. Since the speed gates are just past the security desk at the boundary of this area, they serve as a visual and physical indicator of where the public area terminates. Next to the Speedlane Open speed gates, which are notable because they do not have any closing barriers, guards watch as people pass through them to ensure that everyone is scanning their IDs and that the IDs are valid, in which case the speed gate shows a green light. In a situation where a red light shows and the gate alarms, the guard will check the person’s credentials and can try to troubleshoot the ID card. “The decision was really about what creates the least barrier to those entering and exiting the building,” said Dutil. “We don't really want our students to feel like they are overly policed or that our buildings are not accessible to them. So the design of the Open speed gates provided the best solution in terms of controlling access without being obtrusive." Swift Passage While Maintaining Accountability Before the Student Center was built, students entering any campus building would just show their ID to the security officer as they walked past. The administration realised that while this does provide some level of security, it is not foolproof – particularly when many people are entering at the same time for a class. The College’s head of security made the suggestion to install a system that would allow for swift passage of authorised people while maintaining accountability around who enters and exits the building. As anticipated, there was a brief learning curve for the students using the new system. “This was the first system like this on our campus,” said Dutil. “And the first few days that the new Centre was open were also the first few days of school. There were a lot of people new to the campus who required a bit of coaching from guards and our student staff in terms of where to place your card, and to not walk through before you place your card.” Coming Out Ahead of Swinging Doors Dutil confirms that the access systems placed at Boon Edam speed gates are actually outperforming those placed at swing doors across the campus for convenience and adoption. Across the campus, there is a card reader at every swing door entrance of a building where you present your card and a light turns red or green. But oftentimes the card reader is missed, or depending on the placement of the lights and placement of the guard, it can be kind of hit or miss with students walking right by it. “But with the Open speed gates, they're very visible and although they're not a total barrier to entry, they are something that's right in front of you. Because it's very noticable and not easily overlooked, the students have learned pretty quickly to get their ID out. In fact, this was meant to be a test run for the campus to ensure it would be viable and worthwhile for other buildings as well.” Advanced Features Add Value and Flexibility The speed gates have delivered additional benefits beyond basic campus security, according to Dutil. “One of the nice things about a system like this is that we can count visitors to the Student Centre because we get the data of everybody that scans in. So on a busy day for us it's about 2500 people throughout the day. That can range depending on what's going on and what time of year it is. On weekends we're very slow, since there are no classes – maybe 900 to 1200.” “We are a rental venue as well, so we have times where the building is open to non-Columbia College Chicago people for events or other functions. There's a really convenient touch panel right at the security desk called the BoonTouch, where the officer can turn off the turnstiles during those times and then attendees can move through freely without any alarms going off at all.” A New Revolving Door Adds Comfort and Peace of Mind Finally, the Tourniket manual revolving door delivers one additional benefit to the Student Centre, located in a city known for harsh weather. “Revolving doors are always preferred at a building like this that gets a lot of traffic going in and out. We have cold, drafty weather that blows right into our main space at that first floor entry. The revolving door helps to keep the building warm and saves energy and utility costs as well,” said Dutil. “Students feel safe and comfortable entering the building at night,” he concludes. “Our building has a lot of nooks and crannies, and someone can end up alone in a space. And so I think knowing that the only people that are in that building are the ones that are supposed to be there is helpful. Overall, our students appreciate the effort to try to keep them safer.”

About the ProjectThe ANZAC Memorial was designed as a sculptural monument, a unique collaboration between Architect Charles Bruce Dellit and sculptor George Rayner Hoff; it is arguably one of the finest examples of the union of architecture and art in Australia.The building is a striking architectural form, symmetrical on both axes. It uses elements reminiscent of traditional Gothic architecture (buttresses, cathedral windows, high ceilings) in the Art Deco style. The Memorial is adorned externally with twenty sculptures representing the units of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). These are the sentinels of the building, keeping watch while representing the fallen to whom the building is dedicated.Bruce Dellit’s vision for the Memorial included a still pool bounded by poplars to the north of the building (included for their significant symbolic association with the battles in France and Belgium), and a cascading fountain to the south.The Hall of Service, at the centre of the Centenary Extension, is a civic space that architecturally and artistically mirrors the Hall of Silence. The Hall was named in acknowledgment of the original Memorial halls and to recognise more than a century of service by Australian servicemen and servicewomen. At the threshold to the space are the words: “NSW Service with and for All Australians”.The ChallengeWhen restoring a National War Monument visited by hundreds of thousands of people, you need to provide the highest quality results and finishes expected of such a significant structure in our history. The challenge here, comes from creating a restoration solution on a building which was designed in the early 1930’s, which will be flexible enough to maintain the architects core design features but also created and executed within a tight time frame in time for ANZAC day. Chemical termite controls were not an option because of toxicity issues, making a clean and environmentally safe physical termite barrier the correct solution.APPROACHA typical WA site, the college’s location is predominantly flat, with sandy soils and substrates. In general, this type of environment poses a high risk for termite attack common to this region of Western Australia. SOLUTIONThe main challenge with the installation came from the rammed earth exterior walls. Their natural composition can chip easily, so nailing or sealing the termite barrier onto the wall was not practical.Our solution was to install Termimesh cold joint /paver trays to the perimeter of the concrete slab edge. These protected the concealed entry point between the slab and wall.
